We had a fun time with the kids but the new menu format is not good. This one price for adults and kids that forces way too much food on you is not good. We won’t be back until the dining option goes back to al la carte.
Great place for a group of friends looking to have a good time and laugh. Staff was excellent.
The safehouse was a lot of fun and very ammusing. The food was not very good especially for the price, but the atmosphere thankfully made up for that.
We love The Safehouse. We started going to the original in Milwaukee years ago, and are so happy that they have opened in Chicago. The food is great and the staff is fantastic! One thing to keep in mind is that they have moved from an a la carte menu to a flat fee of $30 for adults and $20 for kids. This included an appetizer, main with side and soda. However, you can still get alcoholic drinks separately. The price still turns out about the same as before, so no worries. We visited this past Sunday with a group of ten, and the wait staff was helpful, fun and patient.
First time to the Safehouse with two girls 7 & 9 on a Sunday at noon. Not overly crowded and had lots of fun. Could have watched the magician all day. Not sure why there were some negative reviews, we had a great experience, but I could see if the place was swamped it wouldn’t be as fun. Will go back again and suspect we’ll have even more fun knowing what to expect!
The service was slow and everything we ordered was apparently out in the kitchen. The drinks were awful and overpriced. Food options we’re limited and not very good. No one enjoyed there food. The only fun part is when you walk in but it was just down hill from there. We told our server it was our friends birthday and they forgot and didn’t do what they said they would but at that point everyone wanted to leave anyways. We ended up buying dessert and snacks elsewhere. The rating for this restaurant is misleading and was a real disappointment.
Intro into the place is very fun and immersive with the staff playing along with the spy theme really well. Lots of stuff to look at and interact with. Food is delicious.
The menu forces big spend by combining a large amount of food into the "combo" that is the only real option to get. If you want /can eat all of it, probably worth the price, but it's a ton of food that if you're not looking to gorge yourself, it's a needless use of money/much leftovers to haul around the city with you. If you're seated in the bar area, the bar server is not likely to be as immersive and involved as the other servers when it comes to the spy theme. They are more focused on pushing out drinks than having fun with the patrons.
Overall, extremely cool idea/place with some minor areas where improvement could be seen.
Very entertaining place. I don't want to say too much as it'll give too much away. Suffice to say we went as a group because of a Family member's Birthday and had an absolute blast. The menu is a set menu in that you pick a meal and an appetizer which is a fixed price and it comes with a soft drink. It's obvious why. The Owners have put a lot of time and expense into the place and there are plenty of people to serve you too. It's interactive with games and clues for those who like a puzzle while waiting for their food. I would not recommend this place for young children-under 6yrs. The decor is on par with a theme park and there are many surprises not just with the secret entrance. We exited out of a "secret" back door and it did not disappoint!!
Good birthday restaurant
But the burger meats are too dry, otherwise there is a good place to celebrate your birthday~
Women's bathroom was dirty with all 3 stalls inoperable. Waiter disappeared for long periods of time (restaurant was not busy). Idea of this restaurant is interesting but not executed well...the "mission" was just boring.
I found Safehouse by googling "best burgers in Chicago." That was no exaggeration. But the burgers were just the beginning. The staff was amazing. Even when my mean uncle wouldn't participate and kept giving them a hard time, they were still friendly and accommodating. Our party kept growing because people I didn't invite kept showing up, but they just kept making room for them.
And FUN! We had so much fun. I didn't even have any alcohol (because mom).
Thanks for making my birthday with my family so much more bearable!
Very fun and entertaining restaurant- food is a little pricey but you are paying for the experience. Kids loved it!
“Agent Tiny” was our server. Very enthusiastic and very responsive to our dining needs. Fun for the kids. Theme was carried out very well from the menu item names to the “scripts” and vocabulary used by the staff.
Service was awful. Had to ask about everything. Menus, scavenger hunt.
No where near the Milwaukee restaurant. $30 for food that was cold with no taste. I would not visit again.
When we arrived, the doormen were fun and engaging. It went downhill from there. Our server was working as one of many bartenders the night we visited. He was not friendly when he approached the table, brought our drinks, and did not return until the meal was over. He did not offer us napkins or silverware. The individual that delivered our food gave us one cloth napkin and a handful of bar napkins until "he could find two more cloth napkins," but never returned. Additionally, our food arrived cold. We hoped that our server would return so we could request warm fries, but as mentioned above, he didn't return. The unlimited side seems like a huge farce since the server failed to return until he could tell that we were waiting on him to provide a check.
The other servers seemed to interact with their tables, and my son really enjoyed the magician, but I'd be hesitant to recommend to someone if they received the same service.
Great concept, poor execution.
A fun themed restaurant make reservations, so you will be sure to get in.
We had a reservation. We were not seated on time and over an hour after we ordered, our food still had not arrived. The server never came by to let us know. Only after we
Complained did our food come out. It was mediocre at best. We wouldn’t go back. The novelty of the place was ok, but not so much that we would be drawn back.
Overall very neat experience. Only reason it wasn’t perfect was because the portions were huge and you’re stuck to one dining option($30, all included food options even if you don’t want that much food)...place is unique though so that’s a plus. In terms of quality of food was average, some things better than others.
Kids had a blast!
They’re testing a new menu where adult pay $30 and children $20. No ala carte options. This is completely insane for bad bar food and so so entertainment.
This place was a bust. They have recently changed their “deal” and try to force each guest into a package meal at $30 for each adult and $20 for each kid. No option to order individual food items. Several tables near us had food quality issues. One group decided to leave after learning of their package menus choices. It appears that management has made a bad choice on what used to be a cool place for families. The waiter was great good with the kids and very friendly.
Our waiter mad Max was awesome! Food was not very good at all. I did not care for the way they nickel and dime do you to death by saying they were going to give my granddaughters a prize if they completed the scavenger hunt and then tried to charge us for the prize. I loved the theme of the restaurant and helping employees tried very hard but the menu needs to change.
Family was really forward to the spy experience. Everyone enjoyed the entry and our party of 5 was seated early. Unfortunately, that's where the enjoyment stopped. We waited 15 minutes for our server and menus to arrive. When placing our order, we were told that this was a fixed price menu. This wasn't explained when our server brought the menus and eoukd have saved us another 10 minutes as no one was planning to order that much food. Additionally, he wasn't helpful answering our questions about the menu.
So...while the price was to include a "spy experience", we saw our server again only when the food arrived. No one explained or offered the "spy experience" experiences to my crew. I had to track down my server to get the check and again to pay. While we were there, it was not that busy. My thought is that we happened to get a server who shouldn't have been employed there.
As for the food, it was not great. My daughter's caesar salad was terrible, my sons chicken wings were drowned in sauce and my wife's fish tacos bland.
Overall, it was a dining experience that we all wish we had back. The price/value combination just wasn't there.
Food was terrible, canned experience. Could be much better. The scavenger hunt was extremely hard to follow and boring. No real adventure. Magician was good and the end hallway were the only good parts. Would not spend the money to go again.
the food was delicious, It was fun. My girlfriend heard the servers using some foul language(It was quiet enough I didn't notice it). The staff did a great job making the day fun. great for birthdays, or if you want to impress some people from out of town
It should be noted that this is a fixed price menu. Kids meals are $20 and adults are $30 or $37. Make sure you are hungry.
The food is okay (not served hot, kind of bland, etc). However, we didn’t go for the food. The experience with the kids was amazing. They loved going on a spy mission and finding all of the little buttons and tunnels. For that alone, I would go back.
I saw the menu online and it had a good variety for our group of 9. I had a reservation so we were seated quickly.
Unfortunately after waiting 10 minutes I had to go back to the host stand to ask if we could get a server. He then came and said sorry, they didnt tell me you were here. That was the most we saw him all night, very poor service. We were then told we couldn't order from the regular menu shown online but could only do their 30 dollar package with a limited menu.
I think if there wouldn't have been so many of us we would have gone elsewhere. Food was mediocre at best as many of the reviews I have read say. The atmosphere is great and unique but with such bad service and mediocre food it doesn't compensate enough. We also waited a really long time to get each course, not sure why as it wasn't super busy. I will say they were on top of refilling our water jugs and the magician was outstanding.
Overall, we enjoyed our dinner. The kids loved the restaurant but our service was terrible. The server did not explain the menu or any of the activities and just told us to walk around and explore. We didn't realize everything they had until we heard another server explain it to the table next to us and show them the list right before we were leaving. The other really frustrating thing was that my water spilled when the appetizers arrived and the menu was moved. It spilled all over my lap, table and floor. I started to clean it up with napkins so I didn't continue to get wet and the waiter said he would get a towel. He proceeded to get a soaking wet towel to clean up the wet table and just set it on the table rather than helping. I had to use our napkins and the napkins from the empty table next to us. To make it worse, he didn't even come back and get the wet towel. It sat on the empty table about 12 inches from us in a booth for most of our dinner. The restaurant was not busy so I don't think he was overwhelmed. The food was ok but I am not sure it was worth the cost, especially with the terrible service.
We went for my sons birthday, great ambiance for a kids birthday. Food was just average for the cost
My friend was visiting from our of town and happen to Yelp this place.. Glad she did. We had a great time.
They have 4 sides available for your entrée: Fruit, broccoli, French fries and onion rings. When we there, they were somehow out of onion rings. Service took a long time to initially come to our table, couldn't accommodate us when we were disappointed that they were out of onion rings, took forever to come back to see how our meals were (the prime rib sandwich was missing the horse radish) and overall seemed understaffed.
It was a fun experience, especially having not told anyone we were going to a themed restaurant - it left them for a big surprise when entering. The food was pretty good. The service was slow, it took a long time to even get a waiter to come to our table and an even longer time to get the food, which we promptly ordered as soon as the waiter arrived since we had little kids. At least this place is kid friendly so the kids had plenty to explore while waiting for our food. Cheese curds were amazing, everything else was good.
Our server had tables all over the restaurant so it was clear she was running all over the place and doing the best she could. Food took a looong time to come out. We were seated at least 1/2 hour after our time, although they did make up for that with drink tickets and were polite about it, as was our server. The whole experience took almost three hours, which meant we had a nice parking ticket waiting for us when we got back to our car. Three hours is just too long for a set menu of nachos and burgers. My kids just had their heads on the table at the end waiting, which was kind of a bummer since it was my son’s birthday (which also wasn’t communicated to our server even though we told the host desk and open table that it was a special occasion.) Don’t know if they were just short staffed or poorly managed but we won’t be going back.
Honestly, we arrived and it looked like fun! We had reservations for a birthday brunch for my adult daughter. Unfortunately when our waiter arrived, he informed us that the website was wrong and they discontinued serving brunch on Sundays as well as the advertised 'bottomless mimosas' and that the way it worked was you bought a 'package' meal. Loads of kids running around...VERY noisy. It reminds you of a little classier Chuck E. Cheese. Fun concept, but if you are a group of adults, stay away.
I got to the location a little ahead of my reservation and our table was not ready at the time which was fine, but after that it took 30 minutes to be seated but we ended up going back to sit at the bar and eat because the waiter informed us that the only way would be able to purchase food items a la carte was at the bar, otherwise there was a minimum for each seat. When we finally ordered our food it took over 40 minutes to get our food which were two simple orders. other than that everyone was very nice and apologetic about everything.
Food was decent. A few orders were off but with the large group we had, it's easy to get mixed up. Experience was great! A little disappointed that the dance floor wasn't really active but otherwise it was still a fun experience!
The ambiance was awesome, but the food tasted like Great America food. It felt like the owners were banking on the theme overshadowing the food, but for $30 a person I felt cheated by the end of the evening. Do NOT order the wings or nachos the burger was basic at best.
Because this is intended to be an “experience” don’t expect to receive your food quickly. It’s not a good idea for a later reservation with small kids. The food is very mediocre, but the experience can make up for it so long as you go at a time when you can stand to wait for your food.
