About Sabroso Restaurant
Sabroso (sah-bróh-so) adjective: Delightful, pleasurable, entertaining, delicious, lovely … To produce this delicious fusion we have used two main ingredients: great Chefs from Calgary, to whom we are permanently indebted, and our Latin roots; out of the richness of cuisines from over 15 Latin countries is where we have derived our inspiration. Cocina Nuevo Latino is loyal to its origins: it keeps the spices, the mixes, and flavors but fuses it with local ingredients, with global techniques to appeal to local palates, to help it make sense in this local context. We have carefully selected the best of Latin America’s wines to pair with our menu; beers from Mexico to Argentina to delight you and your guests; spirits and cocktails together with delicious non-alcoholic beverages to complement our food.

Sabroso Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We have dined 3 times now twice with friends and have been happy with all our meals. Good cooking, good service and nice atmosphere. The menu offers lots of choices. Last time on a Saturday there was a very good singer guitar player.
They off lots of gluten free choices.
This restaurant is always fantastic! I have been for special occassions, with girlfriends and with family the food never disappoints. It is always clean, fresh an d flavourful. The owners and amazing and inviting, you can tell they truly love the restaurant, the customers and the food. Great quality:)
The decor, lighting and staff made me feel like I had stepped into one of my favorite restaurants in Latin America. It is even better if you speak Spanish. The food was prepared/cooked to allow you taste of all the ingredients to savor. The mojitos were perfect, fresh mint and lime without excessive sugar. The staff was knowledgable and friendly. If you can't get to somewhere in Latin America, take a trip to Sabroso!
My husband and I really enjoyed our first visit but this time were disappointed. We decided to share three appetizers to start to see how they were. We had the calamari, cerviche and arguegga (didn't spell that right but only one on menu) The only one we liked was the calamari. The cerviche meat was quite tough and the arguegga dough was very bad. We had to take the meat off to eat it. Arbrozza also used to serve yam chips (like taco chips) with the appetizers so you could scoop up food but now serve yam fries and everything comes with yam fries. So unfortunately the presentation suffered as well as we got tired of all the fries. Unfortunately we would not go back.
We decided to give Sabroso a try because of the good reviews, and I'm glad we did. The prices were reasonable and the portions were generous. We tried the fish, lamb and paella and they were all delicious. Our server was friendly and attentive (however maybe it's because we were the only ones in the restaurant at this early hour).
Overall, I would recommend Sabroso for good food at reasonable prices.
This is one of my favourite restaurants in the city. The owner is a wonderful man, very friendly, and the staff are excellent. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys Latin American food. And I would be happy to take anyone to this restaurant for business or pleasure, knowing they will have an excellent experience.
Try the Rioja wine, it goes with almost anything on the menu...
I booked a table at Sabroso with my girlfriend on Valentines Day. I realised later they had a 'special' meal that night but decided to give it a go anyway. The management had obviously decided to make a big effort and the place was decorated with hearts and cherubs and every couple was given a rose on arrival. They had packed in as many 2-person tables as was physically possible - we were in the middle of the floor.
There was a $60 dollar set meal which included 4 courses and a glass of sangria. The value for the price was OK in terms of quantity, but the quality was disappointing. The food was barely warm and was quite bland. I haven't been to Sabroso before, but I got the feeling the kitchen would typically do better if they weren't so rushed. The service was also rushed and lacking in attention. We were forgotten for a while and had to repeat the order several times.
Overall, I think the experience was spoiled by the restaurant trying to get too much from the night. With a few less customers and more attention to quality it could have been a good evening.
This gem's take on upscale Latin American food is tasty and satisfying, and cheerful and attentive owner Alejandro is ever-present to ensure a top-quality experience. You won't go wrong booking here.
This particular night (Valentine's Day) featured a set menu, which helped ensure very efficient service despite the restaurant being packed all night. There was live music that was just the right volume (i.e., unobtrusive but audible), and it was so good I was a little surprised when I realized it was live. Our server was a little green, but she was pleasant and competent, and, as mentioned, with Alejandro never far away, that quality of the service left nothing to want for.
The restaurant did not advertise a set menu for Valentine's day. Furthermore only one meal price was available. The meal selections did not depict the Latin American food the restaurant is named for. I would not recommend this restaurant for a special occasion like Valentines Day.
I came across Sabroso on Open Table by chance looking for a romantic lunch/brunch and thought Sabroso fit the romantic bill. To our additional pleasure, not only did It meet the expectations, the food was amazing!!! I had the Chorizo omelette and my wife had the eggs Benny. The flavours were undescribable. The only issue was making the choice of what you wanted to have, it all sounded so good. The prices were reasonable, the ambiance was perfect. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends and family to try. We can't wait to go back and try out dinner. Thanks Sabroso for a great meal, see you again soon.
The service at Sabroso was wonderful from the second we arrived. The staff actually seem to really care about how we were doing, which was great! The calamari was some of the best I've had in Calgary. Osso Bucco was very tender and delicious .Paella was pretty tasty as well. These menu items are common but they way they were prepared was different which made it like almost as if you've never eaten them before. I would definitely go back.
Do not have experience with South American food so thought we could give it a go. Food overall was good with the exception of the bread pudding desert, did not seem to be cooked enough as well as dry. Initially the music was too loud to carry on a conversation, but that did not last too long. Likely would not return as it was good but not great.
This restaurant has live music and people dancing throughout the night. The food is pretty good except the portions don't see to be as much as the server and owner makes it sound. Some of the beef and chicken is a bit overdone and dry but the seafood definitely makes up for it.
Somehow, there was a glitch in the reservation - as we were driving to our 6:30 reservation, we got a call that they could only offer us a table at 8 p.m. That's not OK. A quick look on Open Table showed that there was a table at Downtownfoods available instead, a restaurant that I've been wanting to try. We contacted the friends we were meeting and we all just drove straight there from Sabroso's parking lot. The food and the service was fantastic at Downtownfoods! An evening of karma! Don't know if I'll try Sabroso or not - they didn't seem too interested in our business.
This was our second visit with the same couple and the overall experience was disappointing from a food experience and quality down from our first visit. With only one of the four entrees living up to expectations, the other three were pretty disappointing given the high prices at the restaurant. One of the guests had to send the lamb back due to being very overdone, only to have the second time exactly the same after a significant wait, the lamb was still very overdone when it was ordered medium rare. Another entrée, the Paella was very underwhelming with, again, very overdone chicken and a very small portion for the price. I cannot talk to the fourth entrée which was quite good as the overall meal for four at $300 with wine, was very unacceptable for a special night out. The ambience for a Latin American restaurant was very quiet and by 8:30 pm the restaurant was empty. Waiter was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu/wine but seemed quite disconnected with the chef/kitchen. Very nice people who own and operate the restaurant but at these prices they really need to step up the food quality to a higher professional level.
Without a doubt this is one of the best restaurants in town! Try the lamb chops - they may sound normal, but the subtlety of the flavours and balancing of the overall dish so wonderful. The atmosphere is very relaxed, intimate, and friendly. The service is amazing, and the owner is a great guy to talk to. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.
The churros, incidentally, were better than any that I ever had in southern California. (I've not been to Mexico.)
If you really want a treat, order a shot of the Saint Teresa's rum.
surprisingly quiet on a Sunday evening, but very welcome to enjoy fresh flavours in a comfortable and quite space. Very eclectic decor in a room that has had several eatery ventures.....location is a little off the 17th Ave eat-street mainstream and the patio and views may be a little lacking. Go here for the food. Tapas style eating lets diners sample a wide variety of foods, but we highly recommend the seafood choices. Nice selection of wines with many good-value selections by-the-glass. Although calm and peaceful on a Sunday evening, we suspect that this place could also be vibrant and alive (and maybe quite loud?) on Friday / Saturday with live music and a full room of diners. A very delightful add to the Calgary restaurant scene.
The staff was friendly and fun, service was good, the live music was a great time and the atmosphere helped create a nostalgic feel for my days in South America, but the food was under-whelming unfortunately. It was good..but not great by a long shot. The chimichurri sauce was so off note and my steak was not even close to the quality I would expect and the risotto was so salty.
We didn't finish our apps or entrees and decided not to have dessert. Their saving grace was the Mojito! I could've had a dozen.
Nice place, the ambiance is really fun and it feels like you're on vacation. Wish we were there on a Friday or Saturday night when there's live music! There was a nice selection of interesting Latin American cuisine but portions are quite small. We were a little taken back when they added 18% gratuity when were a party of 5 and the only ones there at the restaurant.
Sabroso Restaurant is one of my favourite go-to restaurants on a Friday or Saturday night. My professional clients and friends always tell me they enjoyed themselves at Sabroso. The ambience is friendly and relaxing. I am a regular because the service is impeccable and the food is devine! The owner(s) is working along with his staff to ensure every guest in the restaurant receives the best service possible. I have no problem recommending Sabroso Restaurant.
We really enjoyed the meal -- it was imaginative, nuevo latino cuisine that was tasty and well-presented. Our server was excellent and our conversation with the manager about beverages was fun. The only thing that detracted from the evening was the music. The musician was good but in the relatively small space of the restaurant and with low ceilings the amplifier and several speakers were NOT needed. We had to lean over the table at times to speak to each other.
the reviews are mixed on this place and i will say that mine are very clear. I did not like any of the tapas we ordered.dry, or bland or just deep fried.
the plantains were like rocks and heavily salted, the pork belly was so over fried and dry , the list goes on.
the wine list is so short, and narrow focus . I tried 4 different tapas and had nothing positive to say other then mediocre at best.
We ate early so the noise level was not bad. We chose the restaurant because the menu looked interesting. We were treated extremely well by the staff and manager which made the evening better than would have been expected. It was suggested that the food had a Peruvian fusion flavour. The food was OK but bland. If that is what you like it would be good. The fish at the restaurant was breaded and standard with some seafood salsa on top. Nothing interesting. We have eaten in Peru and we had some very good meals. The fish there was excellent. I have had the same dish in Mexico which was excellent but was nothing like here. If they would include more flavours in their meals I would go back.
