Great experience for our first meal in DC. Food was amazing!!!
Mediocre food in noisy surroundings
Excellent food and very attentive service. The outdoor deck on the second floor was perfect. Would highly recommend one of their signature cocktails and the grilled eggplant! Will definitely be going back.
Food was delicious, so many great flavors!
Service was excellent
Food was terrific. Noise level was high. Nevertheless, we will certainly eat there again.
Saw this restaurant in a top ten and decided to try it while visiting Chicago. Took an Uber - 15 minutes from city center.
Arrived and our table was not ready. We were told to wait in the front area. A waitress came by but neglected to take a drink order as well as clean crumbs off off the seat next to us.
Were seated by friendly hostess. Waitress was sullen and seemed resistant to being the least bit helpful. Special hummus was delicious, salmon moist and tasty, falafel good too. Rice and lentil dish had flavours we didn't care for, Israeli salad was good. Tasty meal, but could have been made much more enjoyable had service been better.
The food was fresh and delicious. Very creative use of tastes and spices. Excellent service and unusually quiet for a DC restaurant.
Small plates were especially good! Very pleasant staff and service.
I have been to Sababa several times. My dad was in town visiting, so I wanted to take him. We enjoyed some of my favorites including the hummus of the day and the lamb shank. Everything was delicious.
Loved the experience at Sababa — indeed a cool place just like it’s name Sababa! The service was excellent, very friendly and helpful. They have a variety of non-alcoholic drinks and house cocktails. We enjoyed Halva World Away.
Starters were great, highly recommend sardines. The fish of the day was fresh and very tasty. Finally, the desert Konafi cake was simply awesome!!
Sababa is now one of our favorite restaurants in DC, we will be frequenting it. Highly recommend Sababa!!!
Really great service. Food was excellent. Made the mistake of ordering too much!
There was a leak above the table and into the food. Some of the dishes were too salty for my taste. Reception was chilly and snide. The server was friendly and the cocktail quite good. I liked the cucumber pickle.
But an Ottolenghi cookbook and cook yourself- you'll be miles ahead in taste and authenticity. (Wanting to give Maydan a try for authenticity but impossible to reserve there!)
We sat in the back where the noise level tappers a bit which was ideal. The waiter was attentive and the busers hard working (although a little eager to remove unfinished plates from our table). The food was good...some dishes shined brighter than others (creamy dreamy eggplant). Overall, a solid experience.
Amazing! Food was excellent! Staff made great recommendations! Can’t wait to go back!!
We enjoyed the food very much. Sababa is a great addition to the neighborhood.
This was a difficult experience to rate. The food was outstanding! But one our party’s order was forgotten and since they have a policy of bringing out dishes as they are ready, we shared all the other dishes and 45 min after we ordered we realized that they never planned to bring the dish. The service was average to below average. There was no apology from the server about the kitchen’s mistake and only when we asked the manager did they comp the dish.
The concept needs work. Our table was cramped and the dishes were served in a manner very difficult to share. Would not recommend for groups. Very awkward and careless service. Would not come again.
OMG! The hummus is incredible — soft, smooth, almost velvety, I’m a hummus aficionado; the only other restaurant that serves hummus this good is Abu Said, in Acco, north of Haifa, Israel!
The pitas are baked with sesame seeds on top, and are soft, chewy and tasty, perfect to scoop-up a generous portion of the aforementioned hummus.
The tiny “salatim” salads are ok, with interesting spice combinations. The fried cauliflower is really good, as was the tuna crudo, the salmon kebab, and the fried Halumi cheese, but portions are tiny.
We’ll be back!!
Took my mom here for Mother's Day. The restaurant was easily able to accommodate a wheelchair, which we greatly appreciated. The food was outstanding - great variety, delicious, and lots of vegetarian options.
Mediocre at best. Won’t be coming back
Another Ashok Bajaj/Knightsbridge neighborhood gem! Started with the fava bean hummus of the day which exceeded all expectations. It was sheer pleasure with every creamy, flavorful bite; the accompanying pita was warm, fluffy and a wonderful accompaniment - worth the splurge to order a few extra, especially if having kebabs; roasted halumi was interesting; dates added a nice sweetness to the mild cheese; cheese was not a soft, oozing cheese but had a spongy texture that was cut into squares; Israeli Salad ingredients sounded ordinary, but it was fantastic; extremely tasty and refreshing; the juicy chicken kebab was cooked to perfection served with a light rice with roasted chili & tomato; the fish of the day was well-travelled, coming from the Red Sea, but as fresh as could be accompanied by two spicy sauces which gave the very mild but meaty fish real zip! The Phoenician Frappe cocktail was terrific; regular G&T okay; wines we selected for our meal were very nice. No room for dessert. Service was professional; didn't have any problem gaining our waiter's attention for the extra pita. Décor is warm and cozy. Even though a bit of a drive for us, my BF & I agreed we would return.
Mother’s Day celebration
Nice addition to the area with fresh, tasty food and a fun vibe.
Thoroughly enjoyed our brunch at Sababa. Our group shared a number of items on the menu each were exceptional especially the hummas, hulumi and the lamb and eggs.
the charred eggplant is remarkable. 2 half-eggplants, moist and practically fluffy, with a scorched surface. definitely get the salatim (though 1 or 2 of the 5 were meh, the others were delish). I didn't want to rate the ambiance/noise level because we were sitting outside/2nd-floor deck: I don't recommend it. the industrial fans made it hard to hear each other and impossible to hear the waiter (he might have spoken up or moved so I could look at him talk without looking directly into the sun, but.). I've only been there once, so I've only had one server. but, while he was knowledgeable about the offerings, we had to remind him of (ask about) our orders, and, in the end, we left without an entree we'd ordered from the start and a cocktail ordered midway through. and the restaurant was not busy at that time.
I have eaten here several times. Love the menu and the high-quality of the food. Nice ambience and super convenient. It was one of my favorite new restaurants when it initially opened. I fear it may be a little bit the victim of its own success though. The last time I ate here the service was super spotty - nice but rushed and it took forever to get our waiters attention when we needed something, or to get the check. Food was still good (I'd come here for the cauliflower alone) but the steak kebab was gamey, and the salmon over cooked. Restaurant was louder than I remember. I'll still come back but I I am hoping they hit their groove again soon...
Delicious food and welcoming host staff. We had a reservation but our table wasn't quite ready when we arrived. We were treated to a glass of bubble to apologize for the wait. Our server was friendly but service itself tapered off after our food arrived. We had to flag people down for water, etc., and to get our check when we were ready to go.
The hummus of the day that day -- fava bean -- was incredible. The chicken & steak kebabs were both tender & flavorful. And the crispy cauliflower stole the show! I'll definitely go back.
Fantastic food and great atmosphere,if a bit noisy for the older set.
overpriced, bad service, excessively noisy, food comes out too fast and each time we have been the server forgot one dish before bill was presented.
Excellent and delicately flavored food with a great non-kitschy deco.
Excellent food and service. The people working here really make you feel welcome and they want you to come back. Will be my go to restaurant whenever I’m in DC
Lovely. Sat outside upstairs on a beautiful evening. Youssef was the best waiter. Food on our 2d visit was wonderful. We'll be back.
Great food, fresh ingredients and superb service. We really enjoyed our meal there this week and will be coming back often. The hummus is to die for! Best I have ever eaten and so were the sardines and the aubergines. Everything was delicious.
Second time at Sababa and this time with out of town guests from LA. We could not have had a better experience. From Scott taking care of us while we waited for our table with Andrea, to Joseph lending an able (and entertaining) hand with drinks, a visit to our table by Chef Ryan, a pristine and delicious baramundi was the stand out plate of the evening, everything else was delicious as first time. Sababa is doing it right.
The drinks were delicious, the food was good, and the rooftop was lovely on a nice evening. That said, while there were numerous wait staff around, our food took about an hour to appear, water was refilled infrequently, and no one really checked in on us (except "Are you still expecting more food?" after we only received one appetizer). I would not drive from VA to return, but it is a fine place if you live nearby.
Wonderful variety of flavors, a little noisier than comfortable for conversation, wonderful waiter : Simon
1 small dish was never served & 1 entree was delayed because the server failed to order it. The 3 pieces of spongy bread didn't tide us over during the very long gaps in getting our food & stretching morsels of cauliflower among 3 of us for nearly a half hour! Very disappointing.
It was good from start to finish. Lovely atmosphere, Kit, our server, was attentive and fun, and the creamy hummus and the halloumi are not to be missed! Choose Sunday afternoons when it is least busy.
