Rusty Pelican Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Can't go wrong with the Rusty Pelican!
The waiter was fantastic, we got our requested table on the heated patio with the harbor view and the food was delicious and to the point. The noise level was low (thanks to the outside seating), so we could have a conversation without yelling at each other.
I dined here last about 10 years ago and the place is still as good as it was then!
The garlic bread was delicious I would recommend that as an appetizer as were the crispy green beans. I had the shrimp with lobster sauce which tasted really good I substituted my salmon for more shrimp and had it with mashed pastries instead of the jasmine rice. This restaurant is waterfront which makes the location beautiful and romantic. The parking is valet only ($5). It was a good experience overall just a little bit more noisy then I expected but the food and location were wonderful.
I was disappointed...the food was really marginal and the service was not great. My mahi was over cooked and the sauce tasted like canned orange juice. The service was off and on - waiter was nice but needed two reminders that we were celebrating a birthday. Not many people in the restaurant - easy to see why.
Pros - service
Sat a large group of 8-12 next to the windows leaving a row of tables designed for 1-4 people against the mirrors. Felt like a tight alley way with my small party of 3 overwhelmed by the noise and size of the group of 12 . Next time fill up the rest of the dining area before seating such a small party next to a large group in tight quarters
We arrived 20 minutes early and were told the table would be ready around reservation time. No problem except we didn’t carry our phones with us so we asked the 3 girls at the hostess desk to come get us in the bar when the table was ready. 40 minutes later - The bartender asked how we were and I just said- not happy- still waiting for our reserved table and one of the girls show up and says- we have been texting you- we forgot you were upstairs. My husband said why did you forget- the hostess- not more than 20 years old responded- I have a lot on my plate- I forgot! Wow! Not even a soooo sorry. That really gave me a sour feel- our waitress - thank goodness- was marvelous.
Sat on patio as requested. Very bright sunny afternoon. The waitress said that an extra table had been added to the patio today. It definitely appeared that way since we had no shade what so ever. It was very hot.
Disappointed that only brunch was being served. Disappointed that my fish didn't seem to be cooked through. We spent less than an hour at late lunch. It was a special day and we thought we would sit for awhile, enjoy the atmosphere, enjoy the outdoors and each other's company. It was not to be.
Rusty Pelicans is one of our favorite coastal restaurants. The seafood dishes are always fresh and well prepared with variety of gourmet sauces such as beure Blanc, lobster sauce. The flat iron steak salad is crowd pleaser as well as other pasta dishes. Services are excellent even on a busy weekends. Outdoor patio is perfect for a warm day with a great view of Newport harbor. Manager always around to make sure her customers are well taken care of. She is personal yet professional. Great food, great service and great view! No wonder why we keep coming back!
My family and friends love this place we usually go for lunch on a Friday or Saturday but this time we had Sunday brunch . It was a lot busier which in turn made the place louder . I has the seafood omlete ( just ok ) but seafood entrees are always great ! I guess my plate needed something more on it like sauteed spinach but it did have fruit on it . Love the garlic bread and views are gorgeous. Oh and we have always had amazing servers !!
The service was very slow, although in fairness there was a private party in one of the rooms and the servers were apologetic about not getting to us promptly. The food at brunch was good and the menu prices reasonable (for Newport Beach). The setting is attractive. The restaurant is not pretending to offer haute cuisine, but for fresh fish well prepared it is certainly worth a visit.
