About Russian Tea Room - NYC

For over eighty-five years, New York's defining cultural moments have taken place at Russian Tea Room. Ever since members of the Russian Imperial Ballet founded the restaurant in 1927, it has been a second home for boldface names and the intellectual elite-an exclusive enclave where actors, writers, politicians, and businessmen planned their next deals and feted their friends' latest Carnegie Hall performances.

Big Disappointment in The Russian Tea Room! The waiter told us 3 of the best dishes—including the signature Chicken Kiev —weren’t available due to a major group earlier. In addition, no alternative cheeses were available for a basic salad —such as feta or goat vs blue cheese. In spite of these limitations to the menu, nothing was offered or any gestures made to improve the dining experience. We even had to ask for bread! Plus, the crowd was very noisy. We were seated next to a loud group of couples who were drinking quite a bit. Overall, the venue looked like it was in need of updating- new carpets, etc. The only bright spot of the evening was a peak into the private room with a beautiful ice sculpture. Perhaps the only way to experience the Russian Tea Room is a private party?

Russian Tea Room is a very special oasis in the heart of mid-town. It is a perfect place to take out of town guests before a concert at Carnegie Hall or a show nearby. The upstairs is breathtaking with the dancing bear fish tank and the faberge egg tree.. Service is attentive and the food is delicious. However, there should be a some more renovation done to the downstairs coat room and bathroom area. It was freezing and messy, not up to the standards upstairs. All in all though, a very special place to dine for the Holidays.

We were seated on the second floor and were happy that there was an elevator to take us up.
The room is decorated beautifully, and there's a huge acrylic sculpture of a bear balancing
balls on his head. The bear is an aquarium and large goldfish swim throughout his body- quite unique! We each enjoyed our dinners. Top of the line!

Great restaurant in NYC. Interesting history. Wonderful food. As usual the staff was totally on the ball. We typically dine here on evening when in the city. Never disappointed.

As a native New Yorker, I satisfied my curiousity by dining at the RTR. We (4) had the pre theater dinner. Hmmm... the salads were great , service very slow, entrees and dessert mediocre at best. Of course it's a great location because we were attending a Carnegie Hall performance. Don't think we'll be returning anytime in the near future. NYC , you have so many thousands of restaurant choices . This one wasn't the 5 star we thought it would be. :(

Hadn’t been since the early 1980’s! It’s reserection is very well done (though the leather booths should be a deeper red!) we took a young friend who now lives and works in Manhattan but had never been. We thought he needed to experience “old New York”. He loved it!

Russian Tea Room was lovely to look at . Very expensive. Their signature dish , beef stroganoff , was fatty and disappointing except for delicious mushrooms. We went with kids and they loved the big “ice” bear with live goldfish inside. Beautiful to look at.
Service was slow.

We were seated on the second floor at around 5:30PM on a Saturday night. The room had enough space for 4 parties to be spread apart comfortably yet still enjoying the beautiful decor from the tree to the fish tank of a bear.
Because we had tickets to the opera later that evening, we decided to order off of the pre-post theatre dinner menu and we were not disappointed!
Highly recommend the beet borscht as a starter and the salmon wrapped in a pastry as an entree. Do keep in mind the portions are generous so do make sure to show up with an empty stomach. I suggest ordering the cheesecake and the chocolate mousse to top off the meal -they surprisingly complement one another.
I do hope to come back to the Russian Tea Room soon. It's definitely in my top 10 of dining experiences.

(P.S. the restroom was not impressive. The only restroom is in the basement and one of the two stalls in the ladies' room didn't lock. Still not enough to ruin an experience, but hopefully noted and improved upon.)

We were only offered afternoon tea menus; it was fine, and decor always festive; but other than two tiny blinis, not the Russian Tea Room of samovar and blini memory.

The borscht was cold. Server brought new soup, but we had to ask for the sour cream. The potatoes served with the omelet were also cold. My wife's stroganoff was fatty and lacking enough sour cream. Server was responsive with more sour cream. He also kept my coffee filled. We have eaten at the RTR many times over the years. This time, it was a disappointment especially given the tab.

On the main, this was an OK experience -- historic venue, good wine list, the beef stroganoff was every bit as good as advertised, and the pricing was quite reasonable. Those were the saving grace upsides. The downer was the Chicken Kiev was overcooked, dry and barely resembled any expectation of this well known dish. But at least we had plenty of time to anticipate the cuisine -- the order took 45 minutes to produce -- more than enough to dry out the Chicken Kiev -- and the waiter spent much of his time ambling up and down the half filled restaurant faithfully avoiding eye contact. Perhaps we'll go back, but glad we at least made it to the fabled Russian Tea Room.

I was really excited to get to come here, our waiter was great as were our drinks. I came with 2 friends, both of which had their meal and dessert before the soup I had ordered even made it to the table. The waiter apologized, it wasn’t his fault but waiting to get my food that we had all ordered together after they finished their meal and dessert was not great.

Our party of one mother, two grandmother's and two girls. ages 7 and 10 were immediately greeted by a very friendly woman who escorted us to the elevator and upstairs to our table under the tree with the huge colorful bulb decorations. She showed the girls the fish swimming in the very large bear shaped aquarium and seated us. The food and wine were very good and there was something for everyone. It was exciting for us to be there as tourists from Minnesota. The only thing that was somewhat dampening was that our waiter was not warm and friendly at all, not rude, but made no effort to enhance the experience. Maybe he was not happy about having to serve a table of women and children. However, an Asian man stopped by the table and was very friendly and volunteered to take our picture, making us feel welcome.

We had a delicious dinner and the service was excellent. However, the dining room was
not what we expected after reviewing their website and also photos from YELP. I was looking
forward to seeing the "bear" and found out most of the photos were of the dining room on
the second level. All in all, we had a lovely time.

Have gone to RTR over the years when visiting NYC. Disappointed. Stuck us upstairs. Made reservation well in advance. Tiny bilinis. Overpriced. Food okay—but not special. Daughter-in-law, grand kids first visit. Redeeming factor—nice waiter. Unfortunate decline of a great spot. Won’t return.

It was a huge treat to sit in the lovely red plush glitter of this ageless New York spot and we had superb wait staff to guide us through the selection of vodka and caviar. The entrees were good but not exceptional. Prices are extremely high -- well above the normal mark-up -- hence my lower rating on value. The restrooms looked like the end of an overbooked evening although we were there early and the dining room was not yet full. I enjoyed the birthday treat and hope the RTR continues to rise back to its former glory.
