About Russell's Smokehouse
Russell’s Smokehouse is a nod to an early time, to the spirit of the West and the cowboy tradition of cooking over a slow, low flame. Our specialty is not in the sauce (which is why we don't call it barbecue), but in the rich smoke and the method of cooking.

Russell's Smokehouse Ratings and Reviews
Overall the food was good. We enjoyed the sausages and the barbecue. But the atmosphere was definitely lacking. We went as a party of 6. They started us at a table that could reasonably seat 4. After complaining we were moved to a larger table. But the server was slow and rude. The dining room felt a bit like a cafeteria. There was no energy in the place. There are other places around Denver to go for barbecue, don't waist your time here.
Also, went to Green Russell for a drink. The atmosphere wasn't much better there, though the drinks were good. Again, there are other places to get a crafted cocktail.
I own a pedicab business in Downtown Denver and I like trying out the resturants in the popular areas so I can recommend them to travelers. I have been looking forward to trying Russells for awhile now cause I would love to find a good bbq place in Denver to recommend.
Let me start by saying the experience wasn't worth the $8 I spent to park my truck... My girlfriend and I had the brisket plate with beans and mashed potatoes; the brisket was extremely dry and bland and the sides were tarrible. I was there on a sunday around 6pm and it was super slow, it took our server 15 minutes to ask us what we wanted cause him and the manager were to busy watching football.
I will tell all the pedicabers out there not to recommend Russells.
We were looking for an easy, tasty, experience before theater. The price was right. The service excellent- fast, attentive, friendly. The check was broken down by patron. The food was great. Good sized portions. Didn't try the original art drinks this time but typically the drinks are the best. Will return.
Had hopes for a promising great BBQ/ smoke experience but was met with incredibly small portions, dry brisket, scary BBQ sauces---if you want good ribs or care taken with smoking/grilled meats Russels Smokehouse is most definitely NOT the place. Wouldnt recommend. Ever.
Good food. Service was so-so. Not overly busy the night we were there. Server seemed detached. Forgot we hadn't even ordered drinks befor asking us to a food order. Hosts left the door open and everyone in the first 4 tables inside the entry were freezing, including us. Food was phenomenal.
I had a networking dinner with someone in a like industry and picked Russell's since it was close to being a middle meeting ground for both of us. The food was outstanding and the service was very helpful and present.
I went home and told my girlfriend and another friend that night that we would have to go back for a fun night as opposed to a work dinner, though eating at Russell's made the night fun and relaxing for a work/networking meeting.
The service was outstanding, the staff knowledgeable and present. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a new place to eat with a unique menu and fun new dishes to try. They also had several local beer selections and their own cola for those wanting a non-alcohol alternative.
Really great smoked meats and great cocktails. Everything we had was tasty and good sized portions, we ordered 2 entrees between the three of us and still couldn't finish everything (we were saving room for pie too). I would recommend this place if you're in the mood for meat - not a lot of veggies on the menu and the food is on the heavier side. Service we great - our server was fun and attentive. Be sure you check out the crazy wall paper in the women's rest room.
Service was great and the servers were professional yet funny. Ordered calamari for appetizer, it was delicious, but I wish there were more pieces of calamari than greens. When we first got it I thought it was a salad! There were about roughly 10 itty bitty rings, even though it tasted amazing. So that was kinda disappointing. My fiance ordered the combo ribs which is supposed to have beef, country pork and baby back ribs, there was only 1 beef rib in the entree!! I ordered the baby back ribs and it was the perfect portion. Their ribs are dry rubbed and every table has bbq sauces for your dipping needs: vinegar, spicy and sweet. The sweet was my favorite. Sides were plain and portions were small. Nothing special there. Overall, good.
We recently dinned at Russell's, and enjoyed our experience. There were only a few things I would mention: the prime rib my friends ordered looked great, but the fried chicken did not have as much flavor as I would have liked. The wine and drink list is great, and the appetizers were amazing! If I could do it again, I would go just for drinks and appetizers. Good environment, splitting the bill was kind of a hassle. Everyone said they enjoyed their meal, they only thought it was slightly over priced. Give it a try though, good atmosphere to dine in.
Arriving right at 3 we settling in for a quiet dinner at great prices. We will definitely be returning as the BBQ is some of the best Ive had west of the Mississippi. The pulled pork could be a bit less fatty but some like it that way i guess. If not for that I would have given them a 5 star.
Russell's is better for lunch than dinner. This trip was a work group dinner. Our group had one meal that was unacceptable (beef ribs that were mostly fat) but to their credit, they replaced the dinner immediately. I also had the beef ribs, and mine were great. Service was friendly but slow. The drink menu is out of the ordinary, and worth trying something outside of the usual.
We had a group of 6, including a 5 year old and a 79 year old, and I thought our server did a good job of taking care of us. I've seen other reviews dissing the food, and they're certainly welcome to their opinions. But I've lived in the South, and my brother has lived in the South all his adult life, and we both thought it was very good barbecue. I had a sampler platter, and so tasted the brisket, chicken and pork. I thought it was all very good; tender, with very good flavor. My wife had the ribs, and she thought they were very good as well. We will certainly go back. Ambience borders on fair, but you can only do so much with an underground space.
This restaurant is linked to other wonderful eateries in Denver. If you like fried goodness and BBQ, this is the place to be. Pricing is average for Larimer Square, so its a nice treat or a good/fun date spot.
Get the ribs or fried chicken, both are amazing!
We found Russell's on Tripadvisor when searching for a good spot to grab lunch and we could not have been happier we did. The location is odd and you will need your GPS as it is on Larimer but you actually need to walk downstairs to get to the restaurant. We went first for lunch and had barbeque sandwiches and this was by far the best barbeque pork I have ever had...really. You need to check it out. The apps are great also and all the sodas are just a little bit different. The wine is to be skipped. We ended up going back another day as we had found a great spot so why try somewhere else!! Go here, no other questions need to be asked.
My husband is follower of Budweiser beer, you do not offer this on your menu. Also the baked beans were too smoked, prefer a little sweeter like good old fashioned style baked beans. Other than this the menu and food was exceptional!! Loved the baby backs and brisket, coleslaw was best Ive had!
I recommended to several friends. Thank you!
The food was excellent and so was the service. It was a Saturday night before father's day but it wasn't particularly crowded. We had a variety of meats: scallops (yum), roasted chicken, baby back ribs, beef ribs. The meat was flavorful and tender without tasting purely of smoke. The sides were unique and very tasty. I will definitely go again.
First and most important - the food was very good. The staff was friendly and attentive, however the details need work. First round of drinks took over 10 minutes to arrive. One of our party ordered a second glass of wine as the appetizer was being cleared, and it did not arrive until we were virtually done with the main course. Also, any place that serves finger food (ribs !!), should give you something to clean your hands with when you are done, but nothing was offered or provided. Overall we had a good time, but a little attention to details could have made it better.
The food is good and they have some unique items on the menu. The waiter forgot to put in one of our orders and failed to come by the table to see how things were after our plates were delivered so he was clueless to the missing dinner. We had to find someone and ask for the meal. The waiter then stopped by and said it should be up shortly, never acknowledged the error nor apologized. He even failed to bring butter to the table after being asked twice for the cornbread. We got butter knives but no butter. Thank goodness for a good manager who apologized, comped the missing plate and brought us butter.
A smokehouse should have smoked meats right?
I had the smoked salmon , it was just grilled like I do at home. the brisket was dry and not smokey. not a lot of effort here for the price. The potato rolls are old. I took my family there for a birthday party. My mom turned 70 , I notified the restaurant and they could care less. thanks guys!
She came from Florida to go here we should've went elsewhere I guess.
My wife and I went to Russell's for my birthday, because my name is Russell, and I love smoked food. It was so good that we went back again for our anniversary. We were very pleased with both the service and the food. Everything on the table was scratch made and amazing. Flavors, combinations, textures, smells, and appearance were all spot on. I have difficulty enjoying dining out after going to culinary school and knowing how to do restaurant service/food the right way. Russell's was amazingly accurate with everything, from the greeting as we walked in to the gratitude as we left. Both the manager and the Exec Chef came by our table to say hello and ensure that we were satisfied with everything, very rare these days.
food - beyond words amazing. i eat slow and generally end up taking at least half my food home and on that note i ordered the combo plate, when it showed up i expected to take most of it home. i was unable to leave more then the bones on the plate. well done.
atmosphere - elegant and relaxed feel, with a very unique style for a steakhouse. which makes since as it is also a speak easy. i was very pleased.
service - our server was a very nice and friendly gentleman. he was there for anything we needed and definitly waiting on us as the term states. my only drawback is that we could tell that we were one of the only tables our server had as he was up to our table every few minutes. a little is nice but every few minutes is too much.
Russell's is a find in LoDo. Who'd guess you could find restaurant-smoked food in the middle of all these restaurants? We enjoyed the happy hour specials as well as multiple entrees. The restaurant has utilized an unusual space below grade with an interesting layout in the space. The homemade pie and the smoked meats were great with interesting sides. We'll be back!
