Just gotten into Denver and found Russell’s but it wasn’t easy. Didn’t realize entrance was down steps and attached to a speakeasy. Extensive bourbon list and bbq options were many. Very cool atmosphere.
I am a BBQ fan. From KC so know BBQ. Make my own ribs abd pulled pork. This was bad food with inedible sauces. Cornbread was OK to start. We were not drinking, but they seemed to have a good beer selection and a full bar. Pulled pork sandwich was dry. Burnt ends were not burnt and not ends. Mushy, fatty chunks. Grits were tasteless. Steak fries tasted OK (not great) but there were only four of them. Cole slaw side was OK.
Down a long flight of dimly lit stairs into a dingy basement. Attempt at ambiance I guess.
Made a reservation for Easter evening on OpenTable to arrive to a sign on the door telling me it was closed. Even better I was with out of town business associates. Good times.
The food was good. The sauces were amazing. The server was phenomenal.
Just when you thought you found the best, you discover another! You won't be disappointed. I wanted to try something new in the downtown Denver area, and this is it. The meal started with the pork belly roasted brussels sprouts. After listening to the Server, we both ended up getting a 50/50 mix of the brisket or burnt ends bacon braised collard greens and spoonbread.
All I can say is that we will visit this place again on our next trip. We thoroughly enjoy the people and the area and visit routinely for a quick get away.
Dinner was so good, we ended up with dessert as well. I was trying to be good, so I only had a single scoop of the bourbon vanilla ice cream. The other dessert was some kind of awesome looking pie .
We went for happy hour and had a light dinner of ribs and sliders before an early event at the DCPA. It's very casual spot with good value, especially at happy hour. The food was good and the service was attentive.
Food and atmosphere were amazing! Such a fun find! Our server was a little on the rude side in the beginning but seemed to lighten up towards the end of the meal.
The food was great. We had the special (beef tips & asparagus) and it was excellent. So was the desert. Service was friendly without too much intrusion. Prices were reasonable. It is down a flight of stairs so I'm not sure it's handicap accessible. I'd recommend it to anyone.
The food was delicious and the server was friendly.
Wonderful food and good service. Fun to be in good old Larimer Sguare again. Great drink menu as well. We'll come back.
For a family that eats a lot of barbeque, we were underwhelmed by the pulled pork, brisket and especially the burnt ends. The sides were tasty, but nothing to write home about. We had great service and the noise level allowed for good conversation. Would appreciate a little more zip in the food.
Excellent service by our server and food was outstanding! We ordered Franks Family Dinner and It was more than enough for the 5 of us.
Went here for the tail end of Restaurant Week for a girls night. It was a new place for all of us and we had a blast. The food was good, our server was fun, and I think we all plan to return. It's always fun to go to one of the basement locations on Larimer, almost makes it feel like you're sneaking into a speakeasy in the 20s!
I have to say this was probably the best BBQ I've ever had. We wanted to try something new, and there was no disappointing. I had the sweet potato enchiladas and they were simply fantastic. My husband had tyre bbq chicken, also amazing. Can't say enough how great this food is. We will definitely be back, and tell anyone who will listen to check this place out.
We went for restaurant week with another couple and thought it would be a good value. We have been there a number of times on other occasions and thought the pricing was right. However, it seems like they really skimp on the menu choices and the portion sizes for restaurant week. We will go back, but never again for restaurant week.
Fantastic food! We went for my fiancé’s birthday. We order scotch, got the fried pickles and brisket sliders, for our entrees we ordered the pork shoulder and wild boar loin, and finished it all with apple pie. It was an incredible dinner and the service was great. Would highly recommend trying it.
Great service from our waitress and the food was very good. I had the pull pork sandwich and the sauces on the table added great flavor. Will definitely come back to try other stuff.
This was one of the best restaurant experiences we've had in a while. The restaurant itself is very cool, in a basement in Larimer Square with a kind of western speakeasy vibe. The food was phenomenal--amazing brisket! The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. It was the perfect way to top off a theater matinee.
Definitely a mixed experience. My cocktail was delicious and so was my shrimp and grits. My husband, however, received his drink in a dirty glass. The waiter offered to replace it but he brought the wrong one (scotch instead of bourbon). Then, there was a long hair in his macaroni and cheese. Overall, the atmosphere feels like a dark basement. For the money, there are a lot better bbq options out there.
Late valentines dinner
Our server Devin was great. She was very accommodating and pleasant. The food was awesome. We had the iceberg wedge salad and it was out of this world. From the pickled onions to the dressing, it was really hard to beat! We split a full order of ribs and took a rib home —- the portions are generous.
We’ll be back...
The drinks were so tasty and so was the food! They ran out of pulled pork before we got there, but that’s always a good sign that the meat is fresh and prepared in house. Would definitely recommend!
The food was very good, some dishes better than others. The cocktails were good but the beer selection was a fairly bland. The place is an odd space and felt a little grungy for downtown dining.
Mixed feelings on this review. Our experience suggests if you are looking for BBQ with that nice smoky embedded taste, this isn't it. In addition to our meal, other diners meals meats didn't have that notable pink smoke ring. We saw brisket, burnt ends, pork, etc., but no discernible pink smoke ring on any of the meats. Their dry rub is pleasant enough - if not a bit overly salty - where it seems like the only "smoke" is detectable in the salt. The burnt ends were tasty but the salt rub made it taste more like corned beef. And I am still wondering why the kitchen didn't trim the 1" fat off the brisket. The slaw, mac, greens, spoon bread, etc., are well designed recipes, flavorful and complimentary to the meats. This not to suggest they aren't smoking their meats, it's just we found no evidence of it in our meal. Sauces are pleasant but unmemorable. This is one of those - go try it. If you like it, great! If you're looking for that Texas or KC-level of traditional smoked meats, this probably isn't the place for you. Great ambiance and energy. Wait staff is excellent.
Great service, drinks and food. Will be back! Funky place in the basement , must check it out
Drinks were different and delicious. Food was amazing! Our service was excellent very quick and attentive.
I've been to many smokehouse BBQs in the US but here I found the cuts (the sampler on the menu) sub-par, mainly too fatty. For my side, I got exactly three steak house fries (and a side salad). The service was fine and I generally like Frank Bonanno restaurants but this one just didn't cut it.
I cannot say enough good things about this place! I don't remember our servers name, but we was patient with our rowdy group and great at helping us get what we loved!
Fantastic New Year’s Eve service and meal
Our second visit. As usual, the BBQ was very good. The service was EXCEPTIONAL. Recommend the rib plate that has 3 different kinds of ribs: baby back, regular pork ribs and beef ribs - all were very good and came with two sides, also good. Three kinds of sauces for whatever your taste. My only suggestion is to ditch the Bristol Brewing stout and go back to the Left Hand Brewery Nitro Milk stout, the Bristol just does not measure up to one of the best beers in Co.
Bit pricey, great appetizers. Good combo smoked meat platter. There is no kids menu but ours just had the shredded chicken sandwich and side of Mac n cheese, which was fine but too much food for a kid. Service was a bit slow but we were not in a rush.
Excellent food and service! Would definitely go again!
Not a great experience. We had a 8:30 reservation and were seated promptly. It took until 8:55 to get us our drinks and the food came a minute later. The service was lousy and the food was nothing to write home about either. I can't in good conscience recommend this place.
Four of us enjoyed dinner at Russel's Smokehouse. It was the first time for 3 of us. Our meals were all delicious - ranging from a salad, a sandwich, and entrees. It is a treat to eat smoked meats, chicken and fish. All of our meals were nicely prepared, and for the entrees, looked very nice on the plates. We all enjoyed them. The location is convenient to many areas downtown. We would recommend it to others.
Overall we found Russell's Smokehouse to be average. The service was very slow but friendly. The portions of food for the price was small. I ordered the smoked salmon with what I thought was a Pear salad but it came with the salmon on top of a few pieces of lettuce. My family ordered the chicken and both the beef and pork ribs and, it tasted fine, but definitely not the best BBQ we've had. For the price and overall options, I would say there are other places with tastier BBQ with larger servings and a better value.
High Quality BBQ & Comfort Food
The quality of Frank Bonano’s high-end restaurants is just as evident in this casual downtown BBQ joint. We started with inventive cocktails - the “Know Limits” was smooth and tasty - and hearty appetizers - fried pickles and pretzel bites were especially good! The meats were moist, flavorful and satisfying. The baby back ribs were among the best I’ve ever had and certainly top of the list for Denver. Portions were generous but not overwhelming. Atmosphere and staff friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend!
Interesting location being downstairs in the basement on Larimer Square. The ribs are very good as was the combo plate. Happy hour pricing on the ribs was a good way to try the 3 varieties. Beer selection is adequate but could use a larger variety. Service was very good.
The knife should have been the tip-off. The ribs were as tough as leather and not good enough to struggle to eat. The sides were O.K.
What an awesome experience! Right from walking in and being greeted by friendly smiling hostesses to even just paying the check! Cozy atmophere . Great servers.. All around fabulous! Oh and the food! Out of this world!
Sat at the bar and had a feast. Loved watching the bartender mix-up unique cocktails and see the plates of food be served up. Fried pickles and jalepenos were great - highlight was my main of smoked salmon The presentation and the flavor was amazing. Hoping for another trip to Denver soon so I can go back.
