Gastro Pub
The Royal Oak is a seventeenth century pub situated within the historic walls of York just two minutes walk from York Minster. The interior of the pub has been refurbished sympathetically and in keeping historically. We offer a warm welcome to all; enjoy your stay either sampling beers by a real open fire or maybe dining in the orangery. We pride ourselves on locally sourced fresh ingredients used to create our diverse menu. Dishes range from traditional British fayre to those with an Italian flavour; something for everyone. We also offer a range of finest cask beers with an emphasis on local together with a great selection on wines. The Royal Oak has been currently voted CAMRA pub of the season - winter.

Looked online for a place within the city to take a visiting friend for Sunday Lunch and this place seemed to tick the boxes so reserved a table online. Arrived to find the table available and a limited Sunday menu (just beef/pork, no chicken despite chicken being available in other dishes) but the waitress was eventually persuaded to offer a chicken dinner for one of the children. Kids meals arrived with adults starters as asked but traditional Fish and chips (hand cut) were actually potato wedges from a freezer bag and the roast potatoes with the kids roast dinner were tastless and almost raw. These were replaced once mentioned to waitress with another portion cooked in exactly the same way. When main courses arrived the situation was the same, Fish and Potato Wedges, roast dinners with raw potatoes but this time sides of 'boiled to within an inch of their lives' veg. On a positive side the gravy was tasteless and the yorkshire pudding large and acceptable I struggle to suggest anywhere else to go instead of here but on my experience I'd be giving this place a miss until they've been to cookery school

When we arrived we were greeted with a smile, very friendly staff, we were seated quickly and served quickly, we were recommended things on the menu and were served with our food which was very quick. The food was prepared and cooked to a high standard and we enjoyed everything we had. The food was also fresh and hot which is important. I cant fault the stay at all. It was a little cold in there but we were sat near the window in a very very old building so I cant really complain.

Not for young family with pushchair. Service was very slow even though it wasn't that busy, 2 waitresses stood next to our table but no drinks offered in the end I went to the bar myself. Food was ok but took an hour to arrive but we were in no rush. Friendly staff but 2 waitresses upstairs didn't seem interested.

We visited York as a family group of 8 at the end of August. We were aged from 3 to 70-something. The Royal Oak was very welcoming and obliging to us all - they made the children feel welcome and ensured we were all happy. The food was of a good quality - it was obviously home made by someone who cared about the quality of the food. There was something for everyone on the menu, and we all went back to our hotel very well-fed and happy! There was a nice choice of beer on tap, and a fair range of single malt whisky - we were very pleased with our choice for our Sunday evening meal and would happily recommend the Royal Oak.
