If you are looking for traditional British comfort food, this is the place. Nothing fancy, but great food at great price. Their offer of two courses for 17.5£ brought us in so my son could try both cottage pie and sticky toffy pudding before he left England. I especially liked the calamari starter. It was so crispy and plentiful. Our table was small for three people, but we enjoyed being tucked away. The service is casual but great. Unlike some pubs in York, where you seat yourself and get no service, we were greeter as we walked in and taken to our table. Server was attentive and friendly. We had previously left other establishments because we were ignored.

Good value for money for z pub meal service was a bit slow even though it wasn’t busy not sure if that’s because we were seated upstairs? So had to ask for more drinks and desert menu rather than being asked as there was often no staff around but no real complaints for the price charged

This time we were disappointed with the food, couple of starters were not available and the main course menu wasn’t upto date. This was only realised when my main course was served it didn’t come as described on the menu,

Returning trip for the Gammon and Mixed Grill. Was not disappointed. I appreciate the QR Code for allergens but my aunt found it difficult to navigate. Perhaps a generational thing. Will return soon of course.

I treated my good lady to a weekend in York, whilst at home, I booked the royal oak, and when we arrived we were pleasantly surprised, the appearance of the pub both inside and out was inviting. The service was friendly and efficient, the menu was excellent, the wine and food was above average and very enjoyable. Well worth the price. Thoroughly recommended.

We were away with friends for Easter weekend and booked the Snug for food and drinks. Perfect from start to finish, 10/10. The young man that served us was excellent, down to earth and very knowlegable. We will definitely recommend to friends and return the next time we are in York. Thank you.
