About Royal Khyber
Royal Khyber ............ A Journey for your palate and mind. The art of Indian cookery lies NOT in high spicing but in the delicacy of spicing. Indian cuisine is universally known for its distinctive flavorings. It was in fact the lure of these spices which first brought the British and the French, the Dutch and the Portuguese to the Indian coast. It is the use of selected spices in a particular manner (whole spices, ground and or spice blends) to bring out the dormant flavors of a dish, which is the real art, practiced by the experienced chefs in the Royal Khyber kitchen.
Royal Khyber is a Fine Indian Cuisine Restaurant, located in South Coast Plaza Village (across from Nordstrom).

Royal Khyber Ratings and Reviews
We've been dining at Royal Kyber for many years. Started when they were on Bristol Street around 20yrs ago with the great "white tent" decor and low prices with high quality. Their prices have gone up, the decor is fancier, but the food is still great, along with the service.
This was our pre-Valentine date and the first time we visited. We were greeted immediately and warmly, taken to our table immediately. The ambience was warm and inviting. The wine list included several of my favorite reds and the menu was extensive, varied and a good range of prices.
I started with the Indian Salad which was good, but similar to Arab Salad, Israeli Salad, Persian Salad, etc. My husband started with the Warm Eggplant Salad...clearly the very best eggplant I’ve ever tasted. I will be a regular, if just to have this salad. Anyone who enjoys eggplant must give this a try! Memorable!
I had the lamb chops and my husband had the Chef’s special lamb shank simmered for 14 hours. The sauce was out of this world — simply divine! My husband’s palate is discriminating and he was extremely satisfied with his choice.
The garlic naan was delicious, as expected, but the piece de resistance was the lychee panna cotta dessert. I have never tasted anything so smooth, tasty and creamy...beautiful to look at and even better to eat.
We will definitely return...frequently!
Well this was our second trip in 3 days of course we ordered the Reshmi Chicken Tikka again as I think that has become my favorite at that restaurant this time we ordered the saag paneer and mustard fish. Very good food a very highly recommended restaurant. Love it
We had gone on a short vacation to Newport Beach and we had heard a lot about Royal Khyber from friends and family. We ordered the Reshmi chicken tikka malai kofta and an Ajwaini paratha. Yum it was very delicious dishes and I started planning another visit with our niece who was coming for dinner in a couple of days. This place is very highly recommended try it
This dinner was our second dining experience with Royal Khyber and we were not disappointed once again. The food is very good, service was perfect and atmosphere was warm and cozy on this New Years Eve night. We think it is the best Indian cuisine anywhere in Orange County, bar none!
Thanks to the chef and the staff at Royal Khyber!
Overall was very flavorful. Loved the vindaloo and Panang paneer. My two kids really liked their yogurt drinks. A few of us were sick and didn’t want to be around people so we sat by the entrance door. The restaurant was able to get customers in and out fairly quickly and everyone looked satisfied. One thought though is the evening after we were all home and in bed my wife and youngest daughter were violently ill. Probably the timing and not the food. I ate leftovers and was fine but neither wife nor kid would.
Royal Khyber is our favorite Indian restaurant hands down. Its very elegant ambiance with great service from a excellent staff that does care about the food and service. I've been coming here for over 25 years since back in the day when it was called Ghandi. I generally eat the Chicken Madras which is unlike any dish you've ever tried. You can order it mild but be ready, it has a deep rich flavor. Love it here and highly recommend.
One of the best Indian restaurants in the OC. I commend the attentive wait staff for their service. In addition, the ambiance of this restaurant and the music, transports you back to India. Try the Vegetarian Thalli, Malabar Fish Curry and the Lamb Rogan Josh. Simply exquisite!
Dinner at the Royal Kyber was of mixed quality. The Punjabi Samosa was outstanding, the best samosa we have ever eaten. The Butter Chicken was also excellent; flavorful but not too spicy. However the Seabass was only average. If the seabass had been better, our rating would have been five stars.
Servings are rather small. The good ambiance, cleanliness an d excellent service help you forget about the wackiness of an Indian reaturant but in terms of food royal Khyber has nothing fancy to outstand a normal Indian reaturant except for the great variety of alcohol.
although we've not been to this indian restaurant in many years, we were remarkably pleased with the quality of the service we received. It was first class and far above what once was arrogance and inattentiveness that pervaded this restaurant in the past. Congratulations to the management and staff for making our dining experience memorable and effortless!
Oh,by the way, the food is good too...whether you're dining off the prix fixe or a la carte. The tomato bisque was sumptuous and flavorful (less so the ginger chicken broth). the Riata full flavored and the salmon special was delicate and appropriately spiced. We also had the prawn curry, which was mild and full of flavor. All in all worth a visit...though for Indian food it represents the pricing of the south coast plaza area....a bit over the top. But the service....memorable.
I took the woman I'm going with for a special occasion dinner before a concert. The food was absolutely outstanding for both of us! Excellent wine! The warm greeting and personal attention provided by the host, the owner's wife, and the servers throughout dinner were unexcelled. The superlative dinner really made our evening! This is absolutely one of my most favorite restaurants! Clearly an 11 on a 1 to 10 scale!
Dined here on a Friday night and they were out of 3 dishes we wanted to order. Party of 6 and the food came out at drastically different times. It was a disappointing experience. We have dined here before for buffet and that was great. With that being said, it is not worth going here to order off the menu.
Went here for Father's Day Brunch, having been to the restaurant on many occasions before.
Made reservation well in advance. Arrived and was then seated at the only unmade table with not enough chairs for our party when there were 3 perfectly well laid tables available of our party size (note the free tables were never occupied for the entire brunch!) Place was not busy !
Seated by the main thoroughfare from the kitchen, waiter dropped glasses and shattered glass everywhere. Buffet area was a total mess, no staff tried to tidy and keep looking nice. Lack of cutlery and poor service. Food mediocre from what I've had there in the past.
Khyber should stick to doing dinners not buffets ..!!!
Will not be returning again.
Very disappointed overall. And this from a true lover of Indian Cuisine.
Excellent food, good service, reasonable ambiance and fair price. What more would you expect from a dining experience? The Royal Khyber is not a high end fine dining experience but rather an excellent "casual elegant" dining experience. Recommended for a good Indian dinner.
Their list of tasty Indian dishes is not as extensive as some that I've seen. There were traditional dishes missing but that said, what was on the menu was fabulous. We had 2 a la carte curries - that means you only get the curry and have to order rice and naan separately. I find that annoying. The two chicken dishes were made with various parts of the chicken - I would have preferred breast meat that I didn't have to cut around the sinewy parts. But again, the flavors were fabulous and some of the best around. I would definitely go back.
