About Royal Khyber

Royal Khyber ............ A Journey for your palate and mind. The art of Indian cookery lies NOT in high spicing but in the delicacy of spicing. Indian cuisine is universally known for its distinctive flavorings. It was in fact the lure of these spices which first brought the British and the French, the Dutch and the Portuguese to the Indian coast. It is the use of selected spices in a particular manner (whole spices, ground and or spice blends) to bring out the dormant flavors of a dish, which is the real art, practiced by the experienced chefs in the Royal Khyber kitchen.

Royal Khyber is a Fine Indian Cuisine Restaurant, located in South Coast Plaza Village (across from Nordstrom).

Royal Khyber is our favorite Indian restaurant hands down. Its very elegant ambiance with great service from a excellent staff that does care about the food and service. I've been coming here for over 25 years since back in the day when it was called Ghandi. I generally eat the Chicken Madras which is unlike any dish you've ever tried. You can order it mild but be ready, it has a deep rich flavor. Love it here and highly recommend.

One of the best Indian restaurants in the OC. I commend the attentive wait staff for their service. In addition, the ambiance of this restaurant and the music, transports you back to India. Try the Vegetarian Thalli, Malabar Fish Curry and the Lamb Rogan Josh. Simply exquisite!

Dinner at the Royal Kyber was of mixed quality. The Punjabi Samosa was outstanding, the best samosa we have ever eaten. The Butter Chicken was also excellent; flavorful but not too spicy. However the Seabass was only average. If the seabass had been better, our rating would have been five stars.

This was our regular visit to an Indian restaurant in Orange County. Considering all factors, I think Royal Khyber is the best India restaurant in OC and is reasonable in price also.

I try to make it 3-4 times a year and I love showing off that I know where the best Indian food is this side of the world.
Thank you again so much

Servings are rather small. The good ambiance, cleanliness an d excellent service help you forget about the wackiness of an Indian reaturant but in terms of food royal Khyber has nothing fancy to outstand a normal Indian reaturant except for the great variety of alcohol.

although we've not been to this indian restaurant in many years, we were remarkably pleased with the quality of the service we received. It was first class and far above what once was arrogance and inattentiveness that pervaded this restaurant in the past. Congratulations to the management and staff for making our dining experience memorable and effortless!
Oh,by the way, the food is good too...whether you're dining off the prix fixe or a la carte. The tomato bisque was sumptuous and flavorful (less so the ginger chicken broth). the Riata full flavored and the salmon special was delicate and appropriately spiced. We also had the prawn curry, which was mild and full of flavor. All in all worth a visit...though for Indian food it represents the pricing of the south coast plaza area....a bit over the top. But the service....memorable.

I took the woman I'm going with for a special occasion dinner before a concert. The food was absolutely outstanding for both of us! Excellent wine! The warm greeting and personal attention provided by the host, the owner's wife, and the servers throughout dinner were unexcelled. The superlative dinner really made our evening! This is absolutely one of my most favorite restaurants! Clearly an 11 on a 1 to 10 scale!

Dined here on a Friday night and they were out of 3 dishes we wanted to order. Party of 6 and the food came out at drastically different times. It was a disappointing experience. We have dined here before for buffet and that was great. With that being said, it is not worth going here to order off the menu.

Nothing special here. I was told this was the #1 ranked Indian Food on Orange County. I didn't find this worthy of any thing "special". Food was good, service good, nice place

We used the Living Social deal, which consisted of an appetizer, entrees for two, dessert and a glass of wine. We received attentive and friendly service, and we appreciated the detailed explanations of the various dishes. Everything was delicious.

The vegetables and their spices were done very well as well as chicken curries. When the restaurant tries to do veal shanks and chops, items not usually on an Indian restaurant menu, the spices fell flat. Very pleasant service.

Went here for Father's Day Brunch, having been to the restaurant on many occasions before.
Made reservation well in advance. Arrived and was then seated at the only unmade table with not enough chairs for our party when there were 3 perfectly well laid tables available of our party size (note the free tables were never occupied for the entire brunch!) Place was not busy !
Seated by the main thoroughfare from the kitchen, waiter dropped glasses and shattered glass everywhere. Buffet area was a total mess, no staff tried to tidy and keep looking nice. Lack of cutlery and poor service. Food mediocre from what I've had there in the past.
Khyber should stick to doing dinners not buffets ..!!!
Will not be returning again.
Very disappointed overall. And this from a true lover of Indian Cuisine.

Excellent food, good service, reasonable ambiance and fair price. What more would you expect from a dining experience? The Royal Khyber is not a high end fine dining experience but rather an excellent "casual elegant" dining experience. Recommended for a good Indian dinner.

Food is great as always. So is the service and ambience. We ordered everything mild which made the 'tandoori paneer tikka' really bland to enjoy while the tandoori platter was perfect.

Their list of tasty Indian dishes is not as extensive as some that I've seen. There were traditional dishes missing but that said, what was on the menu was fabulous. We had 2 a la carte curries - that means you only get the curry and have to order rice and naan separately. I find that annoying. The two chicken dishes were made with various parts of the chicken - I would have preferred breast meat that I didn't have to cut around the sinewy parts. But again, the flavors were fabulous and some of the best around. I would definitely go back.

Satisfactory lunch options. The special lunch meals come in small portions relative to other Indian cuisine restaurants. Lentil soup is spicy as noted in menu.

I was disappointed that it was advertised as open fr post theater meal yet we were "rushed " to order a meal because we were informed the kitchen closed at @10.00pm. The Open Table reservation was confirmed for the time we requested. We also called in before arriving to ensure the management that there was no cancellation. My friends who came from long distances were also not impressed especially since I recommended The Royal Khyber from my previous experience.

The palak paneer was just put together. Would not order it the next time.
The grilled halibut and lamb chops out of this world.
Excellent desserts

I was truly disappointed in the quality of the food and service quite lacking. My husband was craving for a fish dish cook in the traditional India cuisine style--like in a tandoori oven. He picked the Chilean seabass. Unfortunately, the the fish lack seasoning especially the fish. The fish tasted like it was frozen no flavor at all. It tasted like foam in my mouth. The vegetables did not compliment the fish, tasted so out of place! I had the seafood curry. It was okay but can't hardly taste the curry--kind of water down and could use some seasoning. The waiter spent more time chit chat with someone at the bar than servicing us. They were not busy. There was a table of 6 and another 2 plus us. I expected better service and more flavorful food especially the curry part. I rcpected more for the area plus the high price for the food. Our bill total $126. We had 2 appetizers, the lamb meatballs and the fried calamari. The meatballs were delicious and yummy. The 2 main entrees were disappointing. So that is all that I can handle. I will not come back. I am so sad, this used to be my favorite place to go have a good meal with my daughter but no more. I hate to write negative review as I am a chef who love food and people!

My date and I went before attending the symphony. The service was prompt in consideration of our symphony concert later, and the food was superlative! My date said that it was one of the best meals she'd ever eaten, and mine was absolutely outstanding as well. I've been to Royal Khyber several times and my date had been there once before. She enjoyed it so much that our return visit was at her request. On a 1 to 10 scale, Royal Khyber is at least an 11.

The best Indian food I have tasted thus far in So CA. Everything is fresh and the quality of the food is outstanding. Had the lamb shank & prawns, superb. Soups are top notch and their appetizer list offers a variety of selections. Desert choices limited but still good.
