Love the surfing videos, such a great relaxing alternate to boring sports broadcasts on bar TVs. Live music was excellent.
Went on a Sunday evening, Jackson at the front was very friendly and accommodating. Everything after that was just ok. I would love to see more items on the menu that have more "flair" to them. The food was just ok. Our macadamia cake was super dry like it had been sitting for days...yuck. I had filet and husb had shrimp and ribs. My filet was nice and so was the sauce but the potatoes had zero taste and salt isn't always the answer. Hubs food was good he let me have a few bites. I really wanted to just LOVE this place but it was just ok. Think it would be better for drinks only. I want to say drinks and apps but that menu just looked meh. Anyway we would give it another try but likely drinks and apps only.
Great food and great atmosphere - had a great father day and sons Bday dinner!
Our family came here for Father's Day. Mind you we are not one to complain during service or after but we'll be taking this to management. Incredibly frustrated about our last experience here. It has been a couple years since we've been back since last ownership change and we were all less than pleased with the overall service and food for the following 3 reasons.
ONE: I ordered the Prime Angus, Asparagus, Potato Au Gratin for $30 and asked for no potatoes and extra asparagus with the waitress replying, "sorry, the cook won't do that" while my response in return to her was, "sure he will, charge me extra". When our food was delivered my "extra"asparagus came first on a separate plate about 5-6 pieces and about 4 minutes later my meal arrived as I ordered, without potoates.
My annoyance with this is that when the bill came, I was charged $9 for the asparagus. The potatoes that I had not wanted nor did I get, still had some value yet I am charged for a full side! I didn't order a side of asparagus, I wanted them with my meal instead of potatoes. The price was unethical and I should've gotten credit for the potatoes I did not get. Furthermore, this meal was the one of the most expensive on the Sunday Brunch menu.
TWO: My mother ordered Macadamia Crusted French Toast and it DID NOT HAVE ONE NUT on the plate, NOT ONE! Instead it came out loaded with bananas and syrup. Maybe they use macadamia nut batter but their menu is far from misleading. Beachcomber in Crystal Cove has a killer Macadamia Crusted French Toast and if you Google Macadamia Crusted French Toast, 9/10 it has Macadamia nuts! My mom doesn't even like bananas or syrup but she trooped through it. Loaded with syrup & bananas...
Three: We haven't been since last ownership changed and we asked our waitress if they still have their bread and she asked "garlic or regular?" With a party of 8 we said both. Well needless to say, we didn't know they now charge for bread. RH Rating 1 our of 5 stars
Service top notch!!
Could not have asked for a better time. After an amazing meal, Brian answered some questions for us and providing amazing customer service. We live in NorCal and visit SoCal often. We will stop in here every time we come down!! Such a great spot. They do tiki right!
As a misplaced Hawaii resident, was great. Very much like home. Friends, also from Hawaii, loved it too.
Our server Hunter was fantastic!!! we loved the ambience and the meal
This may be a fun restaurant if you don't mind how expensive it is for how mediocre the food is -- garlic bread should taste garlicky. Theirs just tasted like buttered bread. The best food turned out to be the desserts, so there's that plus. Service was fine, but one of my pet peeves is being served coffee on a coffee saucer that has as much coffee in it as what's in the cup.
I would have loved to give the birthday girl a cute tiki mug for her birthday, but $50 - $85 is ridiculous. And that doesn't include the drink. So no, I don't recommend The Royal Hawaiian. Too bad - I loved it when it was a dark, drinky drink bar.
We had such a fun time here! The staff and ambiance were awesome and the food exceeded our expectations! It was very fresh and yummy! Loved the sampler for appetizers and drinks. We are excited to come back on our next visit to Laguna!
Kim was a wonderful server. She was super nice and helpful.
Uninspired food, service was lacking. One of the dishes ordered was incorrect.
I love this place but twice in a row terrible service... Kimmie was short with the orders, rude, arrogant, hurry up and get out of my
Table attitude. Asked for explanations of food and cocktails and her attitude was just read the menu, it’s all there.
Took forever to bring drinks, left at the bar for 10 minutes.?
The last time we were there the hostess sat us down and no one showed up with water anything for over 10 minutes... BBQ ribs are great coconut shrimp is yummy, all the cocktails are to die for, dessert omg just don’t expect warm prompt service.
Quite pleased with the exceptional service and very good tasting food. The ambiance and decor is so charming as well.....and very close to the ocean.Great find!
Love the new poo-poo hut decor. Menu is updated and has a lot of great variety. Highly recommended!
Took the wife to the Royal Hawaiian for a Thursday late lunch and it was an enjoyable experience. The restaurant has a very nice island vibe with a lot of tiki memorabilia. A nice bar with big screen TV’s and reggae music playing. We had the burgers and Lapu Lapu cocktails, my burger was a bit too rare as I requested a medium and the waitress noticed without me saying anything and offered to have another cooked to medium. The food was very good as were the drinks, I like the Royal Hawaiian a little more than the Lapu Lapu but it was just fine. The Royal Hawaiian is a little pricey but a lot of fun and we will come back.
Fun time. Excellent pulled pork sandwich. Great drinks.
We had a 7:30pm reservation and had to wait an hour for our table. The bar was full, so we had to wait in the foyer of the restaurant which was just as well because the live music in the bar was so loud, we could not have even had a conversation in there. All of this would have added up to a miserable start except for the awesome host working the front desk, Jackson. He got us drinks, kept checking in with us, and was very friendly. As far as service goes, he was hands down offering the best service in the whole restaurant. The wait staff was mediocre at best, unfriendly at worst. The ribs were good. The drinks are good but pricey. Despite our hour wait past the reservation we were not even comped our appetizer. We had a great time because we were with great friends and Jackson salvaged the night with his stellar service. However, I probably won't return.
The onion soup was better than the signature onion soup served there years ago- exquisite ! Salmon was moist and flavorful. So glad to have Royal Hawaiian back in Laguna.
Our waitress, she was not very hospitable!
Music was not Hawiian at all, we were disappointed.
Never heard about this place till someone I know on Facebook posted about it. Thought I'd give it a try and read some positive reviews on yelp. I couldn't have picked a more awful restaurant if I tried. The food and drinks are VERY expensive. My food was overcooked, bland and dry. The food all came out at different times and the last diner served had cold food. The place was empty except for a few at the bar for happy hour. I just don't get the positive reviews. Honestly don't waste your hard earned money on this place. It is very underwhelming. I will never go back.
Birthday boy was treated very special - lei, special mai tai and free dessert!
I wish there were better and more options for appetizers. I wish they had more and better options for entrees. Also I think there should be cheaper menu items. I did love the fact that they offered a complimentary birthday cake and it was huge!!!! The drinks were yummy but way too expensive.
Went right when HH started and ordered the 4 appetizer dish and Lapu Lapu . Drinks were awesome but food wasn’t memorable.Waiter wasn’t that prompt for it not being that busy I had to ask for another drink. Waterboy was stinky needed deodorant , I work with food and I know how personal hygiene is a must. I wondered if other patrons noticed?Anyways I’m glad I went if I went back it will be just to drink.
The updated decor at Royal Hawaiian is terrific, but the food is the star here. Fresh and creative, the Caprese salad featured heirloom tomatoes yet the chef took it up a notch by adding avocado and mango slices -- all perfectly ripe. Amazing. I also enjoyed the crab cake appetizer with yummy pineapple salsa. My husband liked the ribs and shrimp combo. The tropical drinks have a kick, so drink responsibly.
Great place for mothers day, and the kids liked it too
Food was ok. Ambiance was cool & tropical. Service was very friendly!
Historic (set 1947) local spot that was recently (Fall 2016) refurbished, and provides both favorite drinks and plates, with new creative Polynesian selections. Great atmosphere with lots of tikis, very energetic, and a little on the noisy side. Prices are on the high end, but whatever you choose is worth it! Would use this place for special occasions. Can't wait to go back!!
Love the atmosphere. Beautiful interior decor, and very good tiki drinks.
Very nice staff.
We hadn't been in a while. The food and drinks are both very good but the prices have gone up ALOT in just a few month. The Lapu Lapu is a good drink but I'm sorry not $15.75 good. We will probably stick to Happy Hours and let the tourists pay those prices....
The Hoisin ribs were awesome. The cilantro sweet potatoes were too!
I came here for Sunday brunch! Ordered the bottomless mimosas as well as an eggs Benedict entree and a macadamia nut French toast. The French toast was delicious but very sweet. They should put less syrup and give it on the side. Eggs Benedict was standard, a bit pricey overall for what you get. Interior and drinks are very cute.
Pretty. A little noisy
This place is absolutely amazing! My girlfriend got the pulled pork sandwich, which was to die for. I got the Hawaiian hamburger, which was the best I ever had. If you get desert, you MUST try the ginger and yuzu creek brûlée! Also, call me a heretic, but I like the rum-based "Ol Fashun" even more than I like a traditional old fashioned. The staff were friendly and the food came out even faster than we were expecting. We will definitely be coming back!
I LOVED the old Royal Hawaiian! Please bring that menu back! Even the mai tai deed not taste good.
We sat for 20 minutes before anyone showed up. After that service was friendly and good. Food was very good, cocktails very good way overpriced...overall tasty fun place, would recommend.
Very disappointed, ordered a Crab Cake and it spelt bad and tasted worse, thought my wife and I were going to get sick right on the spot.
The Ribs were good and they comped the Crab Cake.
Bottom line, I miss the old Royal Hawaiian from years back, there is no comparison....
We have been here many times now, it is a fun place and the service is excellent. The only bad experience here was the first time when they had a very loud band, we all thought we would go deaf. But this time they had a lovely women who played beautifully and at the right level. We had again the poke appetizer which is very yummy and generous, easily 4 of us enjoyed it. My husband and I split the burger which was enough for us. Maybe one of the best burgers around. It was his BD and the server brought a large piece of cake along with our ordered pineapple upside down cake, so that was unexpected and very nice. Our friend got the portobello mushroom sandwich and really enjoyed it.
Wonderful food and service!
