We had a lovely lunch. We loved the decor. It felt like we were in Hawaii. The staff was all so nice!
Love the Hawaiian.., had a problem with the reservation... a bit of a downer for a place we have been many times.. but manger on duty came to the forefront to make things good...no question we will be back... just a rough night... okay with that
We love Royal Hawaiian! The food, drinks and ambiance are always great. We are local residents and take family here for dinner anytime they are in town to visit. Our kids love it too!
Spent the day in laguna and visited for the first time, was not busy and we hung out and chatted for as long as we wanted! Drinks are nice and strong!
Wendie was our New Years Eve server and she made us feel welcome, helped us navigate an extensive menu and delivered a delicious meal.
Fun night out! Great food and drinks.
This was the perfect place to enjoy a lovely meal with friends.
Great food, great service and good value. Our server (Dede) was outstanding.
Ahi was great, staff very friendly and competent, love the drinks and atmosphere. Fairly noisy as a rule but really hard to talk when there is music in the bar even if you're in the restaurant.
Unfortunately, this place has really gone down hill. Lack of professionalism from host, but great service from waitress, Stacy. The teriyaki chicken bowl is not a bowl anymore. It used to be a half a pineapple but now it is just a quarter. Definitely not getting the same amount of rice, chicken was the same though. But we really used to love that.
I don't usually write reviews, but after spending close to $300 on dinner, I felt the need. I'll start with the good: The waitress and the decor.
The bad: The food. When you go to an expensive restaurant, you expect the food to be really good. In our party the only person that was satisfied was the people who ordered the burger. One person ordered the Prime Rib (Christmas Eve special) and it was cold. They did offer to bring another piece, so I will give them credit for that. Two people had the Mahi-Mahi and it was very blah. Not much flavor and a bit on the dry side.
Every restaurant has a bad day and it just happened to be on Christmas eve.
Good food and entertainment! Some people talk a little too loud, like the friends of the entertainer. Overall, not a bad experience. Alcohol is strong, you've been warned. Deserts are rich in sugar. Good Hawaiian Ambience - minus the one screen with football. Good date night, could have been better if parents didn't take their kids to the bar area. Restaurant is a little too loud.
It was our best meal experience in the 5 days we were in Laguna Beach. We had five of us, and we ordered different entrees, and all were wonderful from the beginning to the end. Our waiter was great, attentive and personable. Will definitely go back as our top choice when we are back in the Newport Beach/Laguna Beach area.
Always excellent, however, the ribs and the burgers are top!
Kim is an outstanding server. Made great recommendations and made us feel like family.
Been dinning here since the 50’s!!!
The drinks here are amazing. They have a fantastic Tiki Bar with a good selection of hand crafted cocktails. You can take home one of the cups for an additional fee. I was impress that the collector cups are made by “Tiki Farm” which is really cool. The food is very good with a nice vegetarian selection. Not to happy that a lot of the main dishes do not come with vegetables. You have to order on the side. For the price they should include them. My sister split the swordfish and a vegetable plate so it worked out. Can’t wait to go back.
We drove 27 miles to try this place! Loved the Hawaiian tiki inspired decor. The ambiance was great. I got the pulled pork sandwich- which was delicious! My friend and I were excited to try the pineapple fried rice and were disappointed. It's not very flavorful or pineapple'y. Service was okay. I asked for ketchup, never received it. The restaurant was super loud and it wasn't even full. I wanted to leave, it was that loud. May come here again, if in the neighborhood, for a drink or something. It was just okay, for me.
Disappointed. I went to the Royal Hawaiian almost every week for many, many years, starting in 1972. When it sold, we still went during construction. Ribs were still the wonderful ribs, salad was still the salad, combo was still the combo. Ambiance was fine after walking on boards for many months, with a few bits of the old restaurant saved to see a little bit of my memories.
Last week I called ahead to see if the ribs were the same & the Ono Ono salad dressing was the same. Planned to go with family who had been there many times. This was for a birthday celebration. I was assured they were the same recipes. We ordered a variety of food. It was ok. However, the ribs were not at all the same as the Ribs a la Moana & certainly nowhere near as tender as the Cabang Royal Hawaiian days. The coconut shrimp was tiny & nondescript. No baked potato, no onion soup, no salad with the meal. All the “usual” things I had loved were non-existent & sides were a la carte. No actual real dinner salad even on the menu. The salad dressing was a joke. It was not creamy or anything like the Ono Ono dressing from before, but a vinaigrette. Food was a little high priced for what you get. I wasn’t going to write about the bread, but I find it embarrassing that you charge for the tiny amount. The partial tiny baguette is a joke. We ordered three so the five of us could have 3 bites each of bread.
I am actually sorry this is so negative, but the survey was sent to me, or I wouldn’t complain. I just wouldn’t go back at this point. The waitress was nice. Drinks were good. My biggest complaint, no employee should be saying that any flavors or recipes remain from the actual Royal Hawaiian. The Mai Tai and Lapu Lapu were at least familiar.
I hope for success with the new format. I love the location & the wonderful Hawaiian/Polynesian surroundings. I am just sad the flavors of the meals are gone- the simplicity of the soup, the unique salad dressing that my family loved, the amazing ribs.
The Royal Hawaiian is always a treat. Their tiki drinks are top notch, and the food was exceptional. Highly recommended!
Food was not great. Ambience was nice with live music. Waitress was great, she overheard us talking about a birthday and spontaneously brought cake :)
Great drinks!! Was kinda hammered for dinner but it tasted good to me!
The food and ambiance was great but the staff acted as if they were ready to go home.
The ambiance was great! It felt like we were in the islands!! 🌴 Very comfortable and relaxing!
We celebrated my son's birthday and the drinks, food, and service was the best I've had in years!!
We all ordered Steak & Lobster ...it was perfect!! The libations were refreshing...appetizers really yummy!
Been patrons for 40 + yrs. We love Royal Hawaiian!!
Great themed restaurant. The food and drinks are over priced!
My birthday dinner and they were very accommodating. And the food? So good!
*EDITED - I received a very kind call from the Manager who wanted to make our situation right. I will give them another chance, it was obvious he truly cares about his clientele.
Been going to Royal Hawaiian for a long time. This time the service and communication between waitress and kitchen was lacking. Food quality was not as good as normal and still expensive. We probably will not be visiting RH any more. Disappointing. Could be a good place like Duke's with the right mgmt.
Can't say anything about the food because after they messed up my order the 2nd time, I just got up and left.
Always fun and the staff is GREAT!!! If you want a tiki retro vibe, this is the place!
I was a 'Dine-and-dash' victim, getting stuck with a big check by a very evil and immoral person. However, The Royal Hawaiian, is a fine restaurant. Very fun, and very nice host and wait staff. Wish my visit took place under pleasant circumstances. I hope to come back here soon and actually have a fun night.
Food was not that good. Onion soup had no taste. Food was a little over priced for what we expected. Fair for one time visit.
I had the most wonderful birthday dinner at The Royal Hawaiian! They made me feel so special and I got a lei when I came through the door. They took wonderful pictures for us and took as many as we wanted. There are no complaints because they kept their staff, food quality, and overall service to the highest standard. My friends were so impressed, they already started making plans to go back and take more people. Thank you to the lovely staff at the Royal Hawaiian for making my birthday a night to remember!
Very poor service. Once a big table came in our party of two was totally ignored.
Very fun & great food . Highly recommend !
We love this place! Great food, fun drinks, and excellent happy hour.
Well priced and amazing drinks! Would definitely come back for the cocktails ! The food, however, was pricey but bad. Poke was underseasoned and the rice with sashimi tasted like It had just been thawed!
Food was overpriced for what was received. Rice in the loco moco was hard and stale and could tell it was from previous night, but still took 30 mins for food to come out.
Best ambiance of any restaurant around with a unique, hip tiki vibe and excellent food. Nothing else like it!
Glad to see the Royal Hawaiian has reopened. Used to go there in the 90's and it was always fun. On the coast hwy and was very good. The bruschetta was great with an addition of mango. Very tasty. The ribs were great and the flat iron steak was nicely prepared and displayed. Would definitely return and encourage others to go and have the rum cocktails.
Wonderful food beautiful atmosphere. I would highly recommend.
It’s pricy. Drinks and food both are expensive. Restaurant right by the coast but no view absolutely.
Me and my fiancee were looking for an authentic 1950's tiki bar experience similar to Don the Beachcomber or Trader Vic's, and came across the Royal Hawaiian.
It not only met our expectations, it exceeded them! It was exactly what we were hoping for, and we were greated by Klaire, one of the nicest hostesses we have ever met. She not only warmly welcomed us, she moved up our reservation window for us and even checked in on us during the meal. Our waitress, Wendy, was equally wonderful. She also welcomed us and when we mentioned that we were building a tiki bar in our backyard, she got us a goodie bag of Royal Hawaiian cocktail stirrer sticks and decals!
The food and cocktails were absolutely wonderful, the Lapu Lapu and Mai Tai Royale were the best we've ever tasted. So if you are looking for a fun, relaxed place for great drinks, great food, and great atmosphere, look no further! We're definitely going to be regulars from now on!
