It’s worth wandering a little further afield from Southend-on-Sea proper if you’re in search of a less-heralded gem of a restaurant. And if it’s Italian you’re after, head up Sutton Road east of the town centre to find the little collection of shops and eateries on your way north to St Luke’s and Prittlewell train station. Here, along the road slightly less travelled, you can find Route 5, a cosy and down to earth Italian restaurant specialising in the regional cuisines of Sicily and Abruzzi. The menu is simple and understated, but packed with ingredients from the two famous foodie regions, as is the wine list. If you can’t decide on what to eat, why not book for the third Thursday of the month and pick a starter and main course blind and let the kitchen work it’s magic.

Very friendly and attentive front of house, reasonable prices and food very good, one of the best seafood linguine I have ever had.
