About Roti Indian Bistro - San Francisco
When brothers Ash and Rajiv Gujral planned a new Indian restaurant, they wanted to create neither an ultra-formal dining room nor a tiny hole in the wall venue. ROTI Indian Bistro marries casual, contemporary styling to classic Indian cuisine. Designer Susan Gujral created a warm, modern space with dramatic color, light and imagery that portrays the rich aesthetic essence of India. The chefs take diners on a culinary tour of India, offering a taste of the North in the Tandoori meat dishes and hints of the South in the vegetarian curries. Fresh breads are available from the tandoor, a mesquite- fired clay oven unique to Indian cooking. Local and organic ingredients blend with traditional Indian spices to create a diverse fresh, menu. ROTI prides itself on the dining experience - at this popular new addition to the vibrant West Portal neighborhood, refined customer service from the attentive staff and fabulous food have established a higher standard of dining for the area.

Roti Indian Bistro - San Francisco Ratings and Reviews
All of the food is overpriced, but the calamari, lasi, and naan were worth it. However, I asked for the lamb chops to be well done; they came out medium rare. The vegetables seemed to have been dumbed-down for American taste buds; there were not enough spices to compare them to what is served in India. Same for the curries. There are much better Indian/Pakistani restaurants in San Francisco, but I choose Roti because it was close to home and it was raining.
While the ambient cacaphony is well above the politely euphemistic "ENERGETIC" level, Roti remains one of the many international culinary delights available on West Portal Avenue. Its convenient location a few doors east of the Empire Theater and a half block from the West Portal MUNI station are real pluses!
We ordered vegetarian dishes and enjoyed each one, with plenty left over for lunch the next day.
The competition from the recently-opened Clay Oven at the west end of West Portal Avenue will surely benefit both establishments.
Not enough wait staff. Long wait for the food. Disinterested server. One wrong dish was served and when they finally brought the right one, we had finished our meal. He brought it in a bag to go. Table was cleared before we were all finished eating. Food was tasty but the service was very poor. Nice that it was open on Christmas Eve.
We love Indian Food. This was our first time to try this restaurant. Everything we tried was superb especially the Tandoori Chicken. It was fantastic. Not every Indian Restaurant has Kabuli Naan and we were so pleased that we were able to order it here. It is a taste sensation that everyone should enjoy. We can't wait to go back. One other plus was that were were able to park right in front of the restaurant. We went early and were so glad we did.
Our visit to Roti last month was thoroughly enjoyable so we thought we would return. Except for the basmati rice side dish which was slightly undercooked and bland, the dishes were delicious. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the poor service and long wait. When we arrived, it was not very crowded which made us question why it took so long for the waiter to come to our table. We had to flag him down to give our order and he made no apology whatsoever. Then after waiting over 30 minutes for our food, we had to flag him down again to check on our dinner. Again, no apology. Throughout the time that we were trying to get his attention, it was evident to us that he was avoiding our area and avoiding all eye-contact.
Best Indian food I ever experienced.Wait Staff was very friendly.
The PROBLEM--not enough wait staff. We ordered 3 entrees.A waiter brought us Lamb in lieu of chick tikka. They also forgot the paneer. The 2 chicken dishes arrived after the first. No one knew what was happening.
The wait staff is very knowledgeable
It was pretty good overall, but it was pretty noisy and hard to have a good conversation. Table and aisle space remain cramped. Gotta say that while the food is delicious, I can also find another great Indian place a few blocks down for a little less and a better, more authentic ambiance.
Service for Friday night was problematic. We were seated around 7:50 for our 8:00 pm reservations, but by 8:40, we only had our apetizer. The kitchen was backed up and we noticed that everybody else's service was running behind. There was no apology or acknowledgement from the wait staff or owner. Very disappointing.
Roti is definitely a neighborhood gem. The staff is friendly and the food delicious. The wine list is excellent and changes regularly. The decor is beautiful and the bench seating is especially comfortable with throw pillows and the like. It's high-end dining without the high-end prices and attitude. I can't recommend it highly enough.
When we made our reservation, we were somewhat wary given that our last visit was hit-and-miss. Happy to report that our concerns were unfounded because this dining visit was much much better. The food was flavorful and the portions were more than adequate (what it should be given the price). Service was very good - attentive without being over-bearing. We ordered 4 dishes including 2 side dishes of rice and 2 orders of naan. It was a great meal and one that will bring us back. Had it been similar to our previous visit, we would have likely crossed Roti off our list.
The food was excellent, as usual but the service was painfully slow. It took 1 hour for us to be served including a long wait at the door. (No host to seat us.)
The restaurant was no more than a quarter full so we don't know what the problem was. We mentioned the wait to our server & he was apologetic but it didn't make the wait any less painful.
The lamb chops were spiced delicately (which is great) but were way way too chewy. The Madras lamb curry was very good. The naans were hot and soft, not crisped like a lot of places. Service was great, friendly and attentive wait staff and not at all intrusive.
The dishes are tasty. But most of the dishes have very SMALL portions for what they charge. For example, the CHICKEN KORMA has a very small amount of chicken pieces with a lot of gravy! Chicken is an inexpensive meat. There is no reason not to give a more generous portion. So, while the actual price of the entree is reasonable -- the portion is extremely small. The vegetable specials are tasty -- but also very expensive.
I suggest that you charge a little more for the entree (if necessary) -- but give a more generous portion. Because the portions are so small, my guests and I are forced to order "extra" entrees. The result is that the total costs to eat at ROTI becomes expensive. So, we go there less often and eat Indian elsewhere
This place is a neighborhood favorite. It seems there's been an influx of new staff, which would account for a dip in my service rating - other than that, this restaurant always serves up a good meal. Great foods, good selections and things to choose from on the menu, and specials that are always appealing.
I have been to this restaurant many times and have never been disappointed ... until my visit last Monday night. Service was abysmal, food was not served at the same time and was lukewarm. From the time we sat down and ordered to the time we were served, one hour had elapsed. When we asked about it, they told us they were behind. They should have told us up front and offered a complimentary beverage for the inconvenience. Our waiter just wasn't with it ... not the sharpest tool in the shed. When we left, we mentioned it to the owner whose response was, "Well, we are busy tonight." I've been there when they were busier (like on a Saturday night) and had better service. She just blew us off. Will not be returning anytime soon.
