About Roti Indian Bistro - San Francisco

When brothers Ash and Rajiv Gujral planned a new Indian restaurant, they wanted to create neither an ultra-formal dining room nor a tiny hole in the wall venue. ROTI Indian Bistro marries casual, contemporary styling to classic Indian cuisine. Designer Susan Gujral created a warm, modern space with dramatic color, light and imagery that portrays the rich aesthetic essence of India. The chefs take diners on a culinary tour of India, offering a taste of the North in the Tandoori meat dishes and hints of the South in the vegetarian curries. Fresh breads are available from the tandoor, a mesquite- fired clay oven unique to Indian cooking. Local and organic ingredients blend with traditional Indian spices to create a diverse fresh, menu. ROTI prides itself on the dining experience - at this popular new addition to the vibrant West Portal neighborhood, refined customer service from the attentive staff and fabulous food have established a higher standard of dining for the area.

We always go when they make the cauliflower special. This time it was a creamy sauce with peas. So yummy. I'm thinking of going back before the end of the month. Love the food.

The staff, especially the owner, seemed distracted and preoccupied. They weren’t in tune with us or many of the other diners. The most disturbing was when our server started to gather our leftovers to box up. She accidentally dropped half a lemon from one of our plates. The owner walked by, picked up the lemon and put it on my husband’s plate! He never addressed us or said anything to the server. We were shocked that he would pick something off the floor and put it on a customer’s plate. We expressed our shock to the server - she had no reaction or response. It was like they were zombies without any emotion. Really made me wonder about their sanitary practices in general (like, what happens in the kitchen or areas we can’t see?!?) and their low health score. Eek. We won’t go back nor would we recommend this place.

ROTI is our favorite place to eat in San Francisco! The menu is both traditional and fresh. Flavors are unique and exciting. The monthly specials add variety to an already-special array of superb Indian dishes.

The food was pretty bad. Its hard to mess up a samosa but this was officially the worst samosa Ive ever had. They should have at least added some salt to it. The overall quality of the food was really poor.

Great specials are offered each month that are worth watching for. Manager is very engaged with the quality and service and gets to know his clientele to check in as to how you are enjoying the food and experience. One of our favorite neighborhood restaurants.

Roti is one of my favorite places to dine. We order the Roti's Feast which is great because it is an assortment of the best dishes they have: Assorted Appetizers, Mixed Tandoori, Murgh Masala, Dal, Pulao, Kachumber, Raita, Naan, Kheer and Chai. It also provides for delicious leftovers.

As usual, the food at Roti is excellent and inventive. One of the monthly specialties this time was a curried halibut that was a bit zingy (just right). And their bhindi masala (okra) was delicious as always. (The bengan bharta [eggplant] is my other favorite among the vegetarian curries.) This is by far our favorite neighborhood restaurant and one of our favorite SF restaurants.

Yummy food with great selection of biryanis, and the lamb biryani is really great. Seems to be a favorite neighborhood place, place was full on a Sunday evening in January. Worth the trip if you don't live near and don't even know this area of SF. A treat.

First off BIG thank you to the Host for accomadating 3 of us when my original reservation was for 2. We arrived around 6:30 and the place was already packed. The food was excellent. We had 2 chicken dishes that I wish I can remember the names and lamb dish. All were really good. We also got the mixed Naan plate along with thali plate. Great place can’t wait to go back.

We were frankly disappointed this time, having had better meals at Roti in the past. samosas undercooked, soup too salty, other dishes a bit bland. Hopefully just a bad night.

We came here to celebrate our 43rd wedding anniversary and requested a quiet table. Our request was granted! In addition to our very delicious meal of perfectly cooked vegetable pakora, aloo gobi, and tandoori chicken, the owner sent a complimentary dessert of peppermint ice cream and cinnamon ice cream. We're sure to continue going to such a hospitable restaurant!

This was my second visit to Roti and the food was as delicious, subtle and nuanced as I remember from the first visit. The vegetable korma & goat cheese naan were outstanding. Service was attentive and prompt but not overbearing. Looking forward to my next meal at Roti!

We met there for a special birthday celebration for one of our business friends and expected to have great time and decent Indian food. We had great Indian food and great value for the money. It was birthday celebration that we will never forget and now great spot for Indian cuisine.

The food was good as always, maybe even better. We had their special for the month, cauliflower (the whole cauliflower with a wonderful sauce on it and in it), chicken korma (absolutely, my favorite), and my daughter had veg. korma (her favorite), along with garlic naan and rice. Their mango lassi is excellent. The host is the ever genial Pun Kash (sp?), a wonderful kind man. 5 stars. I highly recommend this restaurant.

I love, love, love the murgh makhani (also known as butter chicken). I've introduced friends to Roti and they've returned without me! On our most recent visit, we had just returned from a cruise in Europe and couldn't wait to eat at Roti. Great food, good service.

Roti's is a terrific local restaurant with a pleasant, responsive staff. The food is always very good and the owner and family are very thoughtful and helpful about menu items. My only problem this time was one table of really loud guests who seemed unaware that they were not at a brawl.

Roti rocks, its streets ahead of other Indian Cusine (Clay Oven for example) I really struggle to think of another Bay Area Indian with better quality recipes and the staff are lovely!

This is our favorite Indian restaurant in San Francisco, heck in the Bay Area! Mr. Pankash, the owner, is the nicest man and always ready to tell you anything you want to know about Indian food. We love his Murgh Makani (chicken) and Tandoori Duck, and this restaurant makes the best rice ANYWHERE! Long, Dry, flavorful, perfect every time. Absolutely delicious. But there are so many great things to eat, it's hard to choose. The lentil dishes are superb, as are the nann selections, and skewered meats galore. Wine and beer prices are very fair. Roti should be on everyone's restaurant list!
