About Rosa Mexicano - San Francisco
In 1984, Rosa Mexicano set a new standard for Mexican cuisine when it first opened in New York City. Playing a leading role in defining what was then a "new" cuisine to American diners, Rosa Mexicano delivers authentic Mexican cooking in an accessible, stylishly festive atmosphere. Rosa Mexicano"s menu features a range of award-winning signature dishes, including our Guacamole en Molcajete, prepared in a traditional lava rock mortar. Described by Time Out New York as "green ecstasy in a stone bowl," it is prepared table side and served with house made chips, warm corn tortillas and condiment salsas. Rosa Mexicano is also known for the Frozen Pomegranate Margarita, as well as the stylish and festive ambiance that includes our dramatic 15 ft. water wall.

Rosa Mexicano - San Francisco Ratings and Reviews
The food was mediocre for the cost. Guacamole as an appetizer was $16 and 3 bland fish tacos cost $20. Felt I was paying for location and that's it. And when a non-server picked up our check and I asked if he could split the bill between the 2 cards attached to the bill,he got all flustered and handed the bill to our actual waiter (who was very nice) and quickly walked away like it was too much ask. Our waiter easily obliged. I will not being go back here.
First time visiting Rosa Mexicano and my guest and I were satisfied with our dinning experience. We ordered the guacamole to start, which they make directly in front of the table. It was delicious! Since there was only two of us, we had a lot left over. We ordered the fish tacos and the shrimp tacos. It came with 3 tacos each, a side of beans and rice and corn. You get a lot of food per serving, so it's safe to say you'll take some home with you. Definitely a must try!
Before making the reservation, we scoured the website and OT to make sure that we could use the regular menu. THere was no mention of a prefix (like every other restaurant on NYE), so this is why we chose to dine here. Very disappointing coming in to find out the regular menu wasn't available.
The people working the door were very rude. We called to ask about parking and were told "It's New Years". Great, like we didn't know the date. Then when we entered, we were told we had to be up by a certain time. I understand telling a walk-in this, but starting out our experience in such a negative way for a reservation, was not a great feeling. Perhaps putting a note in your OT responses so when we make the reservation we know this and then we have time to cancel if we decide to? (BTW, we were up in less than an hour, so being that rude was really pointless.)
Then we were ignored by staff for 12 minutes at the table and then were helped by a really curt and irritated server. Halfway through the meal, Benjamin took over (perhaps he was unavailable when we sat and the rude server was covering him). Benjamin was a breath of fresh air! He made sure we got chips and salsa ASAP since we were ignored for so long. He was attentive and thoughtful. The food runner that evening was also wonderful.
The food was disappointing. We came here after loving the Rosa Mexicano in DC for years and it was subpar. The salsa had no heat and the only good enchilada was the mole. The rest needed the acidity better balanced. The relleno was solid!
Made a reservation. Arrived on time. The moment we sat down, someone asked if we'd like guacamole - of course! The guacamole arrived quickly......and then NOTHING. No menus, no waiter, no nothing for 20 minutes. The only way we got any food at all was by stopping the busboy. And, this was after 5 minutes of frantically waving at any server we could see. This was not my first time there, but it will be my last. Food was good, but it's not worth the hassle.
There was 8 of us in attendance. I had the Baha Pescado while my husband ordered the Chamorro (sp) along with the Queso Fundido w/Chorizo. My fish tacos were good. The Chamorro was very tender and tasty. We also had the Elote that wasn't good due to the corn being undercooked or not fresh? Overall the remaining 6 of us were very happy with their meals. The salsa was bland to most of us, tasted more like something from a jar even tho it wasn't. The Guacamole on the other hand was awesome esp the Spicy one! Wasn't that spicy but just enough kick to make it enjoyable. We'd all go back again. The hostess that greeted us wasn't pleasant at all. Didn't smile and just had a mad dog face all the time. We were there Sunday 12/17/17 for dinner.
Went for an early dinner before we left the city and was not disappointed. The menu was not what I was expecting. It seemed like a fancier take on the traditional Mexican food I am use to. This being said, the food was fantastic as were the drinks and staff.
We arrived early and were welcomed with an attitude from the hostess who did not want to help us. She said there was nothing she could do until 4. We waited at the bar and were taken to our table 20 minutes after our original reservation. During our dinner, service was slow, the wait staff forgot a number of our requests, and there was no joy in the service. The experience was a disappointment.
Took 20 minutes before server came to ask to take our order, then another 30 minutes for food to come out. Server dropped a knife covered with sauce on my shirt, and only offered a napkin with soda water on it (which took a while before coming out). I used to dine here several times a month, but now I’m reminded why I stopped. It was only out of convenience today, but didn’t turn out well.
Not nearly as good as the Rosa we tried in New York near Lincoln Center. Guacamole was lumpy and lacked flavor of that in New York. Fresh fish was mediocre, and churros (which were comped) were doughy and undercooked. A real disappointment after a great meal in New York.
I go to Rosa Mexicano quite often because I work nearby and the food is delicious. One on going issue I have is with the front of house hosts. They always seem to not listen to what is being said or they look annoyed when your reservation has to be decreased in party sized. Attitudes like that should not be shown in any restaurant. I understand that the restaurant can get busy during lunch but if you have a reservation, please don't make it look like you're second guessing about seating us inside. This has happened multiple times yet I still come back. Please fix this. Thank you.
ROSAS IS CENTRALLY LOCATED AND HAS A GREAT AMBIENCE. THE FOOD AND BAR QUALITY IS NOT VERY GOOD. THE DRINKS WERE SO SWEET THAT WE HAD TO SEND THEM BACK AND THE TACOS WERE COLD . THE MEAT INSIDE WAS ALSO BLAND. THE GUACAMOLE MADE AT YOUR TABLE WAS FANTASTIC ! I WOULD RECOMMEND ROSAS AS A KID FRIENDLY NOT A GREAT FOOD RESTAURANT
Went for Happy Hour with a couple friends. Bar was lively with a several high tops, bench seating in the back and a long table for group of 10-12ppl. Service was great - they kept chips/salsas/drinks filled for us. We just got a wide array of tacos with sangria, which were all pretty tasty. Will def go back for another HH and possibly dinner.
Nice location & a really big restaurant space near the Ferry Building. We had guacamole while waiting for our friends. It was good, but the cost was $15! For our entrees I ordered fish tacos, my husband had Carnitas; both were so greasy we couldn’t finish them.
Save your money and go to the Mission for Mexican food.
Came from East Bay to dine with SF relatives near Ferry Building. Delicious variety of dishes identified by where in Mexico they originate. Shared delicious carnitas and beef brisket tacos. Enjoyed the chips and salsa (on the house). Generous servings. Busy weekday lunch crowd at 12:30. Quieted down by 1:30.
We celebrated my granddaughter‘s fourth birthday at Rosa Mexicana. The staff was very accommodating considering her food allergies and young age. She had her first Shirley Temple and churros complete with a candle and Happy Birthday sang by staff. A memorable day!
We had a great meal here. It's not super crowded and the food was overall very fresh and flavorful. The margaritas were well done. My friends had been to the sister restaurant in NYC and said that this was very similar. I will keep this in mind for Mexican.
