About Rosa Mexicano - First Avenue
Our flagship location opened its doors on First Avenue in 1984. From the moment you arrive, old world charm permeates your dining experience through authentic Mexican colors and rustic folk art. Traditional amate gods greet you at the front entrance and brightly colored papel picado hangs from the ceiling. Corn tortillas are made on site and an exposition grill further seduces your senses. With its warm ambiance and outstanding cuisine, this Rosa Mexicano location has remained a perennial New York favorite for over 25 years.

Rosa Mexicano - First Avenue Ratings and Reviews
I've been coming here since they opened in 1988, and it is still my favorite restaurant in New York. While I've visited the other New York locations, and am a "regular" in Washington, D.C. as well, nothing beats the original. The tableside guacamole is still fabulous -- and absolutely order the short-ribs. Wonderful!
We live in Buffalo, NY. This was not our first trip to NYC but was the first time at Rosa Mexicano. This trip to the city was to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday and, since she is a huge mexican cuisine lover, we chose Rosa Mexicano to enhance her celebration. As you can see from our rating, we were extremely pleased with our choice. Kudos to "The Little Black Book of New York" for listing Rosa Mexicano as a select place to eat and drink.
Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Rosa's. Service was excellent, the guacamole lived up to the hype and the main courses were delicious. Staff couldn't have been more helpful....offering a taste of the sauce that accompanied the enchiladas before I ordered was a nice touch. Will definitely go again and highly recommended to anyone who enjoys Mexican food.
This was the first Rosa Mexicano and for some reason I feel like the service and the food are much better than the other locations they have since opened. The tableside guacamole was excellent and my enchilada entree was very good. Before we were seated we had great pomegranate margaritas at the bar and the bartender was super friendly even though the place was packed.
i have been going to rosa for a long time-i was shocked by the terrible service bad food.
they served broken chips-no salsa-never asked if we wanted another drink.
rosa has always been the special place to go-but now thatthey are nationwide -i would suggest Chipotle.
What a great find for the neighborhood. The food was delicious...amazing guac just the way we wanted it! And churros for dessert...yum yum! This place can get packed on a Friday night, but the environment and decor matches in vibrancy, and the sangria is a must try!
I don't understand why this place is so popular. There is much better Mexican food in the city. Almost all the food has a heavy smoked flavor. The cache of having your guacamole made at the table is lost when it isn't made to your specification. It is crowded and rushed.
Great place for Mexican! They were very friendly and accomadating. I chose a dish and was afraid it may be too spicy, but the waiter assured me that it wasn't and he was right. My friend had a spcial dinner requet which they fulfilled. the guac is out of this world!
We went there for brunch after we heard they have a new DIY bloody mary cart, just like with the guacamole, you can choose any combination you like and they make you a bloody mary on the spot - we tried the mild and the spicy which were great!!! The food was great as always. we love this place, classic Mexican food, great service too!
The service was excellent and responsive from the minute I walked in the door. This site was far more casual and loud than the Lincoln Center one. If your're looking for a fine dining experience go to Lincoln Center, if you're looking for a regular city night out, go to First Avenue. Either way you won't be disappointed, but I do have to give major kudos for the service at First Avenue, it was the best I've gotten at any restaurant in a while.
Thought the guacamole was outstanding. We had it with medium heat. The chips that came with it were great because they did not take away from the great flavor of the guacamole. We had the trout appetizer special which was a nice bit, loved it. I had the crab enchiladas which despite the "three peppers" on the menu, I didn't find to be all that hot or spicy. They were good but nothing to write home about. Pleasant atmosphere, dark which I love, house wine was lovely, friendly staff, all in all a nice place and I would definately return.
Rosa Mexicano is our favorite restaurant! When we have guests, we treat them to a dinner at Rosa in Hackensack b/c the ambiance, food & drinks are great! However, recently we decided to dine at the 1st Ave location being the most convenient. Our reservation was at 5 pm. We have a baby who was w/ us at the time. We arrived at 4:45pm thinking that we could enjoy some drinks at the bar before being seated for dinner. However, the door was locked until 5:01pm. We were left in the cold with a fussy baby for 15 minutes! When we got inside, our table was not ready even though I had left explicit directions, it took 45 min. for our waiter to take our order after being served drinks & guacamole & the menu had a more limited selection. We won't back!
Lovely restaurant. We dined early and had the bar pretty much to ourselves to enjoy really good margaritas. The tables are spacious and the setting is calm (early anyway). Out server was nice and let us sample many of the sauces before we ordered. Food was good, basic Mexican fare.
This is one of my goto restaurants whether for a date or if I have guests from out of town. My daughter happens to live 2 blocks from it so I take her there often.
Great drinks, excellent authentic food and excellent service. My only problem is they try to force the guacamole on you. Its OK and they make it tableside but I think the other appetizers offer a much better dining experience. Just tell them "No" 3 or 4 times and they won't make it.
My personal favorite here are the Tablas. Large beef ribs that have been slow cooked. Very tender and delicious. Its a very large portion and I always take a doggie bag. The Boudin de Pollo is excellent as well. Its a chicken pie served with a green sauce. Very tasty.
I was very pleased from the moment I arrived on how accommodating the staff was to seat my party where we felt more comfortable. The service is outstanding. We never had to wait to ask for anything because they were always on top of it.
Will definitely come again and tell my friends about it.
We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and were seated promptly. It was fairly empty when we arrived, which was a concern, but diners started to trickle in while we were there. Service was friendly and efficient without being overly solicitous. We ordered the guacamole, prepared table side. It had a nice flavor, although I prefer my guac a little more mashed- it was a bit chunky. They have a nice selection of Mexican beer and the margaritas did not taste like they came from a mix. My husband had a beef kebab, which he said was cooked to perfection. I enjoyed the crab enchiladas which had a light cream sauce and did not mask the flavor of the crab. Homemade chips and corn tortilla shells were complimentary and unlimited. I would definitely go back
It was our second time at this location of Rosa Mexicano. Food was excllent again.
Although a little noisy, the vibe is great at night in there. Or server was very friendly and efficient however his English was poor and placing our order was challenging. The floor manager was extremely rude, he told us we couldnt place our shopping bags under or next to the table- not quite sure where he wanted them placed as he offerred no alternative. Overall the food is great and the drinks are awesome too (pomegrnate margerita!). I will return here at some point.
Also be aware you will not be seated even with a reservation until all members are standing in front of the maitre d'. They're pretty full of themselves in that way..
With a reservation it still took the restaurant 45 minutes to sit us. The host never showed any empathy and never offered an apology. He told me that they were running behind and to check back in 10 to 15 minutes. I checked on our reservation 15 minutes later only to be told that they were still not able to sit us. This went on another 15 - 20 minutes. i will say that the mgr did comp us a margarita for our wait. After we finally got a table, we only saw our waiter 3 times. In fact we had to flag him down if we wanted ANYTHING! Overall, while the food is slightly above average, the service is definitely below average. For us, service can make or break a place and in a city with SO many restaurants there's no reason to tolerate bad service.
Being long time Rosa devotees, we were disappointed with our over-all experience, to include food, drinks and service. I have owned and operated high volume, world-class restaurants in Connecticut for twenty years, so I speak from experience and knowledge. It is obvious that Rosa has initiated portion cutbacks and probably less-expensive product changes, specifically in their sangria quality. No excuses for the service "blackouts" we experienced. I have a hard time recommending now, as I have sent many friends in the past but I think the problems we experienced were not "one nighters", but more systemic and philosophical, from their signature dish, guacamole, all the way to dessert, which we decided not to order because we just want to leave.
