Our flagship location opened its doors on First Avenue in 1984. From the moment you arrive, old world charm permeates your dining experience through authentic Mexican colors and rustic folk art. Traditional amate gods greet you at the front entrance and brightly colored papel picado hangs from the ceiling. Corn tortillas are made on site and an exposition grill further seduces your senses. With its warm ambiance and outstanding cuisine, this Rosa Mexicano location has remained a perennial New York favorite for over 25 years.

Unfortunately, it has gone downhill since Last visit. The whole experience was poor. The food was mediocre and also the service. The chicken inside the enchiladas was very dry and tasteless. The guacamole had no taste, they didn’t season it at all. Everything took a long time and they kept apologizing. We use to like it here but after last night we will not return. They went into opening restaurants all over and lost the quality of the food.
While the guacamole is always super, the entrees were mediocre. The brisket beef burrito tasted ordinary, even on par with Amy's frozen entrees. It may have even been microwaved. I ordered a glass of sangria with a tremendous ice cube filling the glass and, you guessed it, very little sangria. A lot of money spent for very little enjoyment.
CARAMBA! Beyond any doubt, the WORST (i.e. almost non-existent) service I have ever experienced. Packed to the rafters on a Friday nite and totally unprepared to deal with it. Too bad, it used to be a fun and tasty place to go. I would have given zero stars for service but did not want to give the impression that I had just neglected to score it.
This is the original Rosa Mexicano and it is smaller, more intimate, less noisy and less touristy than all the others. The best guacamole in the city. Favorite dish is the skewered shrimp with a frozen pomegranate Margherita. Have been coming very here for over 30 years. Never disappoints.
We would have enjoyed the evening if the waiter had not been so impatient and rude. The restaurant was not busy so he could have taken the time and been more pleasant. The rest of the staff were pleasant enough but our waiter made it clear that we shouldn’t ask any questions or require any help when ordering. As a result he got the order wrong. The worst was when I asked for the corn tortillas which were part of our meal. He came back and practically threw them at us.
Rosa became our ritual every time we visit NYC. Love the food, the restaurant and the service. The guac is life! It's definitely the money maker, but you have to have it every time. The fact that it's made table-side adds a nice touch. If only it was bigger for $15. Had the shrimp tacos which was delicious. My fiancé is obsessed with the Tres Enchiladas. Daniel was our server and he was great. We've gone to this location and the Union sq many times, different vibes, but both great. First ave feels more like you're in Mexico as it's lowkey traditional and homey but all decorated with Mexican flair. The Union Sq one is contemporary decor and high ceilings. The drinks are so strong. Two drinks and I'm done.
Surprised that this place gets good reviews. First of all, don't order the 20 oz. sangria..it's not 20 oz., it is a 20 oz. pitcher packed with ice, so that there is barely 2 small glasses, and it is tasteless and watered down. Beer would be a safer bet. The guacamole was too chunky and needed salt, but of course, no salt shakers on the table. Tacos were OK, but not great. I don't mean to be too harsh, but can't recommend the place. We wouldn't go back.
The service was very poor. The hostess was very unorganized and was not very sure what waa going on. The waiter was never to be found and the food lacked flavor. We normally have liked going there. Recently it has been going downhill...Can somebody please help them...they lost this guest for good.
Possibly the worst service I had at a restaurant. Daniel, our server, first started off by laughing at my acquaintance's severe nut allergy. He thought she was joking and was very unprofessional with his reaction. Our food came before the bottle of wine we ordered and we had to call upon the manager/shift leader multiple times to inquire about the status of our order. Food was unimpressive and not worth the wait.
