    This small restaurant is a GEM of a find in Farmer's Branch/Carrollton area. We started with the cornbread that was SUBLIME. It's yellow, honey, natural butter and rhubarb on the side. It was exceptional. We had fried green tomatoes with the shrimp and corn salsa and it too was stellar. Would make a great appetizer for 2 or a meal for 1. We had red fish/crawfish fried rice - again - just insanely rich, just the right amount of heat, perfectly cooked fish. We had charred red cabbage steak on this sweet/satisfying garbanzo bean/coconut stew. Perfectly prepared and complimented one another - a sweetness to this cabbage. Then came INSANE desserts that despite being full from our meal we could not stop ourselves. Sweet potato creme brulieux that was PERFECTLY topped with the caramelized/crisp sugar topping - and OMG this banana pudding. It was laced with caramel like a praline inside just a TAD with the wafer bottom and topped with nuts. It was SO GOOD I had to force myself to stop and brought the rest (and any leftovers) to my family to rave. The food is typically southern and if you're from the South - it was PERFECTiON with it not all being cajun. Next time we want to try the duck fat fried chicken. The restaurant is small, casual but fine dining, quaint and the service was IMPECCABLE. They removed dirty utensils and replaced with clean after every course - we never wanted for anything but didn't feel bothered. My friend had a spicy chai latte that was stunning and she adored. Reasonably priced. WHERE HAS THIS BEEN? I cannot say enough - cannot wait to return and share with more friends!

    We arrived (party of two) an hour earlier than our reservation and they accommodated us as soon as we walked in. Cornbread*, pea salad, halibut, and NY strip were all a 10 out of 10. Best meal I had this year and maybe the best I’ve ever had in the Dallas area. We will be back soon.

    We went to Roots for our Anniversary and while we were not disappointed there were both highs and lows. For starters, the ordering process was like that in Europe - order everything at once. I like to first order a drink while perusing the menu and perhaps an appetizer. Here we were instructed to order everything from drinks to main entre, (sans dissert,) all up front. The cornbread we terrific and my wife's pea salad was great. I ordered the field greens, and it would also have been terrific but the dressing, (or something,) was over salty. As an entry my wife went with the halibut which she said was a good as any she'd ever had - high praise. For dinner I ordered two more appetizers - gumbo and grits. The gumbo was great and for the price perhaps the star of the menu. The grits, on the other hand, were not edible. I ate one grits-ball and it was so salty I almost gagged. I don't know if it was a rare mistake or if that is the recipe they use but it reminded me of getting a mouthful of sea water. I do not know what it is about salt and this restaurant but they should lock it away somewhere. I was also a bit disappointed that our server, who notice that we ate almost none of it, didn't bother to ask why, when taking home other uneaten parts of the meal and we opted to leave it to the trash gods. My wife enjoyed her wine and I stuck with beer which was fine. All in all, the meal was very good but not perfect.

    Everything we ate was delicious! (Duckfat fried chicken, cappelletti, pork belly, red fish, cornbread, yams, fried green tomatoes) Bree took great care of us and explained the menu well. Live music was a nice surprise. We had a great time!

    The food is always delicious at Roots! The Springtime Pea Salad was my favorite this time. It was so fresh and crunch with an amazing dressing! I wish it was on the menu permanently!
