Root Down serves “globally influenced seasonal cuisine,” which basically means we go where inspiration leads us. We’re not tied to one style or genre—we’re hoping to create one of our own.
At Root Down we pride ourselves on striving to solve the ‘Omnivore’s Dilemma.’ We have created a dining spot where all dietary needs will be accommodated, including vegetarian, vegan, raw and gluten free; also allergies or intolerances are always handled professionally by the kitchen team. Our menu has icons reflecting this philosophy, though we always request you notify your server of specific needs. We look forward to seeing you soon!
What Insiders Are Saying
Even with all the new Highlands competition, Root Down is still a Denver staple.
If you’re a party of 4 rather than a party of 2 like us you may have a better experience. 2 top tables are all either on top of another table so you’re in their conversation, or near the patio door so you’re constantly changing temperatures with the door opening and there’s a lot of activity walking by you the whole time. The booths for 4 top tables are far superior. The lighting was also strange - it was fairly dark. Overall the service was pretty good, particularly for Denver restaurants. And the food was pretty good - though not as good as Linger. We got the beet salad, arepas, scallops, & lamb sliders. We recommend the arepas - those were special. The salad was good, but a little too heavy on the acid (mostly balsamic vinegar). The scallops themselves were delicious - but the quinoa salad around the scallops didn’t compliment the scallops and was very underwhelming. The lamb sliders needed more aioli and slaw - otherwise all you tasted was lamb, which is fine but very basic and underwhelming for $17. The sweet potato fries that came with it were good but you can get those anywhere, and the curry lime sauce was not pleasant. They gave us a free dessert for my birthday which is nice - but they didn’t tell us what it was or what was in it. It seemed like a chocolate mousse with some various crunchy garnishes. It was nice but very intense. Overall - we could go back in another season when the menu changes and with a couple more people so we get a better table and better ambiance. But we likely will go to another restaurant over Root Down.
everything about root down was wonderful! want to go back very soon!!
Its some of the best food in the city, its expensive but worth it for a special occasion. Special shout out for gluen sensitivity there is only 1 item on the entire dinner menu that has gluten in it at all. Everything clearly marked and the entire desert menu is GF as well.
Great experience - making a reservation is an absolute must!
I love the consistently great food, service and ambiance of Root Down. The offerings are dishes I would never make on my own, which is a big part of why I come back to Root Down again and again.
We made a 1:45pm res for my partner's birthday. We sat next to a bridesmaids party of 6. They were loud. I wish we had moved, but it was our fault for sticking it out and hoping they would eventually leave. I got the Beet Salad, which was on the small side, but tasted great. My 9 yr old daughter got the veggie slider and enjoyed it, apart from the jalapeños. As you'd expect she loved the sweet potato fries and also the unusual taste of the ketchup. My partner got the tofu scramble and also enjoyed. He said he would get it again. For dessert, my daughter got the truffle which she said she "loved, but it was small" and my partner got the tiramisu rice pudding. He said "it wasn't incredible, but it was very good". The server could have been more attentive, but otherwise he was on top of it. I love root down for their sustainability with regards to the 75% organic sourced ingredients, and all the other finer points you can read about on their website. I'd love to see 100% organic cotton or hemp napkins as opposed to what I'm assuming is a cotton/polyester blend. Also, we brought our own stainless steel straw for our daughter, but it would be nice to see Root Down move towards providing stainless steel/bamboo/etc. straws, as opposed to plastic "by request only" (which is respectable, but could be better). I also would like more clarity on the menu with regards to which items come vegan and which ones you have to opt into. It gets confusing as a vegan. Do I need to make sure I verbally say I want it vegan for every item? The dessert menu was where it became more pronounced with the truffles. Are the truffles naturally vegan or do you have to request them vegan? It was unclear. We didn't request upfront, because we forgot but then found out later they come vegan. Attention to smaller details on the menu would help future dining vegans. Bottom line: Root Down is one of my favorite restaurants and I'll be back, but next time for dinner!
There were four of us and we all loved our food and the service was outstanding. Irving was available to meet our every need. He was friendly and very helpful. Jeff Lammer was great to us as well. He provided us with pancakes and the Bomb for dessert. We loved it all. He greeted us and was a great addition to our meal. We will be back!!
Cool place busy as heck. We had fun, great 1st date spot!
Love, love, love root down! Always super yummy and creative. I highly recommend keeping the antipasto from the Sunday Supper on the menu all the time, sooo fresh and yummy. If you're lucky, you'll get Shannon as your waitress, knowledgeable and super sweet!
Linger is better!!!
I hadn’t been to Root Down in years and was kinda disappointed.
Our waitress was great! The drinks - ok, tiny poor, this making it over priced.
Dinner- veggie sliders were yummy, tofu paneer- add more sauce and veggies! Cauliflower dish- good!!
I wouldn’t head back anytime soon.
Amazing atmosphere. Great food. Has an open patio overlooking Denver. Our server answered all our "tourist" questions and made our experience here even better.
Everything was great. The food was amazing and the service was great too!
We had an excellent time!
Fantastic atmosphere, food was excellent. Excited to come back!
Everything was exactly right. The server was knowledgeable, fluid. The portions and the pairings were delightful.
Great food and environment! Would definitely recommend!
The food was excellent and the service good, but the restaurant is designed to be Very Loud. I eat out to enjoy food with friends and found we could not speak easily because of the noise. Root Down should install some sound attenuation to make for a better dining experience.
Exceptional! We made reservations for 7:30 thinking it would take us that long to get there from where we live -- across town, Rockies home opener, etc. we got there an hour earlier expecting to wait it out. They found us a table right away with 15 minutes of happy hour still available! Talk about service!! The duck wings were spicier than I was expecting -- still good. The beet salad was awesome - as always, and the hummus dip was great. Great meal, great service - this has become one of our favorites!
Our group of 5 had a wonderful experience at root down. The food was excellent, as well as the staff. The ambiance was fabulous. We sat out on the patio. The evening was slightly cool, but they had heaters, so it was quite pleasant. Also, the specialty cocktails were delicious!
I really love Root Down. It was warm enough to sit outside, so lower noise level. Our server was excellent and the food delicious! I am a vegan, and the staff here does a great job with creating meals that work for a variety of diets.
So many great vegan options. I just love it here!
Tiffany ROCKS! Had an amazing dinner... huge compliments to her and the staff for accommodating our allergies and making great suggestions!
Everything is always great!
The dining experience was wonderful is every way. We were recommended a bunch of dishes (lamb, rockfish, scallop risotto, etc.), and we were blown away!
Root Down is a Denver classic. Such a charming place with amazing service and great food. Great for Brunch, Happy Hour or Dinner!
This was refreshing to find a good gluten free restaurant with a variety of small plates. Our small plates were tasty but not spectacular. The seating was uncomfortable since the bench was too low for the height of the table. I sat on the provided pillow but then has nothing to lean against. I'll go again because of the variety of vegetarian and gluten free items.
I've had dinner at Root Down several times and been very impressed by their food. This time I decided to try them for brunch to see if it was the same quality.
I will say the bartenders were a bit overwhelmed and took a good 10 minutes to get their attention. However once I did they were nice and quick. My one negative note is that my dining partner's glass arrived with loads of lipstick still on the rim (yuck!), but we just switched out his glass with a water cup. I was pleasantly surprised to see blood orange bottomless mimosas on the menu for $19 (I thought it was a steal!) and regular bottomless mimosas for $16.
As for the food, I had the mushroom and feta omelette and it was eggcellent (yes I did). I also had a side of the chicken sausage which was very tasty. Our waitress was very peppy and friendly and never once made us feel rushed. Overall we both enjoyed our visit and were pleased to see the majority of the restaurant laughing and genuinely having a great brunch.
So good! The service was supper fast and every item was an awesome combo of flavors.
Our service was wonderful and the food was very delicious. It’s a bit pricey but overall worth it for a date night.
Mind blowing food, amazing service, and overall incredible experience! We’ll definitely back!
I had brunch here and everything was wonderful from start to finish. Wonderful food and great service.
We had a good dinner, were seated quickly in the heated patio, and had great service. It was our fist time at root down and we would go back. Arepas were good and filling, only thing, they didn’t ask how we wanted the lamb sliders cooked and they were a bit overdone.
I brought a special date to Root Down. We had a nice bottle of wine and shared a salad and entree. The vibe was so chill that we spent 5 hours conversing over dinner then after dinner drinks. It was a very nice night.
It was wonderful. The flavors in the dishes were amazing ! The food and service were outstanding. The staff made our birthday celebration so much fun!
Not very much food for value. Tasty, but very pricey. Service was great.
Celebrating my 1 year anniversary with my girlfriend. We were given excellent service and little samplers such as caramels made in house. The food portions are small but are outstandingly tasty.
The food took forever. It was great when we finally got it, but I didn’t feel it was worth the price or wait once it arrived.
We went to Root Down to celebrate our wedding (we eloped), and wow... we absolutely made the right choice. The food was incredible, and the service was delightful. Root Down was hands down one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. Two thumbs up, five starts, loved it, highly recommend it.
Root down was excellent! Great vibe! Creative and tasty menu. Our server Matt was friendly and had awesome recommendations.
