Root and Barrel Kitchen
We had a fabulous meal. Food and service were top notch.
We were extremely disappointed. We sat over 90 minutes before we got our dinner even thought the restaurant did not seem to be overly crowded. Three out of the four of us had cold meals. We were at the restaurant two times earlier over the last two weeks and thoroughly enjoyed the value, the food, and the service. Our third trip was very bad.
Neither Scott or Jeff were onsite to accept our grievances but Angela, our server, tried her best.
The food is fantastic. The service is excellent. Sweetest waiters/waitresses ever. Very nice comfortable atmosphere. This is one of the best places in town!
Food was fixed perfect, but not too big of portions. Steak and salmon fixed perfect. Drinks were tasty and timely.
I will never go back! We were a party of 12. All except 1 meal was either cold or burnt. They we out of a lot of things. One in our party tried to order three times before he was able to order something they had. The appetizer was also burnt.
Unfortunately I will not recommend this establishment to a friend. We made reservations for 7:15pm, and were seated by 7:15pm, we did not see a server until 7:30pm, we did not see our food until 8:45pm. We were very patient, the manager stopped by and said there was a backup in the kitchen and there would be a delay in getting our food. They should have told us this before we ordered, so we could decide if we wanted to stay or not. When our food finally arrived, the burger was at best room temperature and dry. The pork tips were so hard, the fork couldn't penetrate through the burnt layer. I really wanted to like this place but the only compensation received was when I noted the two unedible dishes. Server was good, but would disappear and not return for 10+ minutes. If you do visit this establishment, good luck. Maybe you will hit it on a good day.
I will say, they make the strongest drinks ever, well worth the price haha. A splash of coke with a glass full of crown, wooh.
Fantastic food and service . Hard to find a casual yet food fabulous menu anywhere near what this restaurant provides. We have tried many restaurants in Western NC and Root and Barrel is worth’s the drive if you don’t live in Franklin proper. We see the owner and family on many occasions and they treat us as if we were best friends and valued customer every time. The staff like John at the bar are all special. If you haven’t tried this place then spoil yourself!!!
Outstanding experience for a group of 8 on Mother’s Day! Not our first experience and definitely not our last!
The food was delicious. The wait staff seemed to be busy but the restaurant was not. lol Loud tv out on the patio area. But again, good food.
We came here after my nephew graduated from college and it was wonderful! Everybody in our party cleaned their plates. It was so good, and we all said that we would definitely be back!
We are traveling through town and had an amazing dinner here. I had the trout and my husband had the salmon and our plates could compete with any restaurant in all the major cities we have traveled too. Keep up the good work. Great to see a place like this in a small town!
While the food and servicewas excelkent , the actual time spent waiting on our meal was close to an hour with only one other party present. Incredibly embarrassed as we had out of town family with us. Having said all that, we will try another night after several weeks have passed. Hopefully kitchen times will have improved.
Easter Sunday brunch
Jaxson was an exceptional server, food was on point as usual. Never disappointed with a meal here. Looking forward to Easter Brunch!
It took our server over 10 minutes to greet us and another 10 minutes before we had our drinks. Bread was brought to the table after the salad course and there were only 2 pieces for 2 people. My husband's order was completely wrong. They did offer to cut the price. All in all, it was disappointing. We have eaten here many times, but this was, by far, the worst service.
Pricey for the Franklin area, but very nice atmosphere and service. Food is good but not spectacular for the price.
Food was cooked perfect and was very tasty, bread was very good and drinks were not weak. Nice place to eat.
Valentine’s Day for special occasion. Fixed menu. Had three appetizer options, out of one at 7:00! No bread offered or received. No salad offered or received. Lobster tails very small and served over gummy risotto. Osso Buco served over a very large bowl of cannelloni beans! Zero presentation! Bottle of $30 wine. Extremely disappointing meal for $150! We would never go back here.
Very nice to have an upscale restaurant in Franklin. It is one of the main things lacking in a small town.
Food was wonderful and artfully prepared. Service was slow. My glass of wine sat up at the bar for 10 minutes. My husband finally went up and got it himself. Server seem disinterested. We will give it another try based on the excellent quality of the meal.
Great restaurant, especially for the area! Scott (the manager), brings his experience from a Michelin two-star restaurant in Chicago, and it really shows.
We have eaten here twice. Both times the servers were excellent, with very good knowledge of the menu and just the right level of attentiveness. The food was almost perfect, and the staff has a good handle on food allergies.
We will be back!
Food overpriced and not that good. Was just okay. Booths are very uncomfortable for sitting. Prices a bit high for area, quality and portion size.
It was New Year's Eve and they were very short-handed. Took 30 minutes to get a round of drinks (two bartenders). Were told by serve staff that kitchen was slammed. Management should have jumped in to assist. One young lady wasn't even an employee and was helping out (very agreeable).
Also website did not mention limited menu for the evening. We will not eat there again.
We enjoyed our New Year’s Eve dinner. Happy we made a reservation since there were large parties, however the restaurant seated us in a cozy area to have a romantic evening.
First time visiting the restaurant we had a great experience. Second time was New Year’s Eve and we were disappointed they did a set menu. Wasn’t the best selection. We would go back though.
My overall experience was very good . There was someone playing the piano and singing that was nice . The food was delicious. I had the short rib and grits and it was something I would definitely order again .
My wife and I were celebrating our 40th anniversary and I made reservations sight unseen and we were more than impressed. We arrived 30 minutes early and were greeted warmly and we seated in less than two minutes. Our server (Nathan) was very pleasant and talked with us until our food arrived. My wife and I agreed that our filets were most certainly the best cooked and presented filets we have EVER had. Our food was hot and arrived quickly. It was all delicious. We have ALREADY recommended Root and Barrel to several friends and my wife posted it on FaceBook.
A really enjoyable dinner. The food was excellent, the service good and the ambiance of the restaurant enjoyable.
I was pleasantly surprised to find an eatery of this quality in such a small town. My wife and I were visiting for a weekend getaway in Franklin. Nice little town to visit. Pimento cheese dip was good. Could have served with something nicer than tortilla chips. Shrimp and grits is a regular order for me wherever we go and these were top end. Chess pie was delicious. We liked this location so. I have we returned the following night just for dessert. Chess pie second night was not near what it was night prior. Burnt crust and half the size on second attempt. Cheesecake was top notch though.
Food was fantastic, service was great. The only complaint was one of the appetizers came out after the main course. (The waiter took it off the check per my request). Everything else was great!
We enjoyed our meal there. I loved the pimento cheese spread and butternut squash soup but my pasta was so so. Husband’s steak and fries were good. Friend liked her chicken. Craft cocktail menu had some fun choices and we shared one piece of chess pie that was excellent.
We had a good of 6 men and ordered several drinks before dinner. The service was slow and had to ask for our drink several times before they were delivered to the table. Once we ordered there were several things that were not available, no filet mignon, no shrimp, etc. The steak were served cold, not cool, cold. Not sure what was going on that night October 17th but overall experience was terrible. Will try a different restaurant next visit to Franklin
Wait staff was very friendly and attentive. I had a reservation and was seated immediately. Food was excellent....North Carolina trout over a unique blend of puréed vegetables and more sautéed veggies on the side. The pimento cheese appetizer was hot, gooey and yummy. House Pinot Grigio was a good value on “Wine Wednesday.” Topped off the meal with a slice of chess pie which was delightful.
Terrible food prep. Took forever and came out cold. Made us late for movie.
Management comped the meal. Been disappointed a number of time with the kitchen service but in the past management never took responsibility before.
Hate to post unpleasant reviews but this was horrible. The drinks served were a joke and the waitress actually agreed and took it off the bill. The trout was paper thin and this is not an exaggeration with slivers of vegetables for $22. My husband got sick from the shrimp and grits which should have been call shrimp and cheese and the menu stated it had sausage which was non-existent. Very disappointing and beyond overpriced.
We were seated quickly and our waiter, John, was attentive and helpful. Novel food items on menu. We had the pimento BLT and Reuben sandwich - both very good. Nice wine and beer menu.
We loved the fried artichoke hearts! It was all yummy.
Root & Barrel had an interesting variety of foods which was what were looking for. Trout deviled eggs, Caesar salad with capers, filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes and season vegetables. Service was good, nice decor, noise was a little above average but no biggie. Cocktails were decent not the best I had. Huge wine selection! Prices absolutely reasonable for the food portion sizes. We Will be back!
We went there for brunch on Sunday only to discover they no longer serve brunch although it is still listed on their Facebook page. I ordered tomato bisque and the bisque was good but the 1/2 sandwich was soggy. My husband ordered a hamburger with fries and it was also soggy with cold fries. Our friend who ordered trout said that it was good. Both of the guys said that the desert (cheesecake and chess pie) was good but I noticed that the crust on my husband's pie was burned. Franklin needs another good restaurant so we were sorry to see that the food is less than average now. Root and Barrel does not seem to be able to remain consistently good. This has been a problem since they opened. Perhaps they cannot hire and keep a qualified chef.
We love this place!!! We have a home in Franklin and when we come to town it is our favorite. The service is impeccable, atmosphere good for any occasion, and the food is spot on . My adult son ordered his filet minjon “bloody” honestly they made it charred and beautifully rare. Don’t miss this great restaurant, our seafood special was salmon and was equally special. We’ll be back. Thank you Root and Barrel.
