Root and Barrel Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
This was our first experience at this restaurant since the name (and management?) change some months ago. First I want to say that though I checked "no" to the question whether I'd recommend the place to a friend, I might -- depending on what the friend was looking for.
The service, in my opinion, was only a little better than abysmal. We were seated promptly and given menus; we asked for water and said we'd wait until we decided what to eat before ordering wine. After quite a wait, our server returned and we gave her our order including wine. We ordered the fairly pricy filet, and said clearly "no mashed potatoes". We ordered the mac and cheese instead. After another wait, our server came and apologized that someone elst had picked up our wine but they would repour right away. The wine and the steaks appeared at about the same time, with mounds of mashed potatoes on each plate supporting the filets. The person who brought the steaks (not the person who took our order) offered us the potatoes to keep, suggesting one of the other side items. My wife told her she couldn't stand mashed potatoes on her plate so they went and removed them. The mac and cheese arrived next.
I don't want to belabor this further. Franklin is not a large town, but can easily stand a nice sitdown restaurant. Unfortunately, we probably won't be returning to Root & Barrel for a while. If we see reviews that indicate improvement in the service, we might give it a shot later. The food is good, but pricey; for the price the restaurant should offer more professional service.
This was the 2nd time I’d been to Root & Barrel - we sat at the table for two at the front window which is a nice intimate spot; the night we were there there was a noisy group in the bar area so we were glad to have a quieter area. The food was good with ample portions.
We love Franklin, this was our first time here at Root and Barrel and won’t be the last. The food was on point. Had good beer selection and wine as well. It was little loud in there but was fun. I️ don’t know if they always have someone singing. But don’t let it stop u.
What a find! We were in Franklin NC for a few days one being our 26 th Anniversary. We chose the Root and Barrel because of the menu and location. It was a wonderful night & a great meal. Portions are ample I had the Chicken Breast stuffed with Guda & my husband had the Mahi-mahi which was grilled to perfection. Our waiter was attentive but not hovering which I appreciate. Try this place for an excellent meat& fun time!
It took awhile for our food to be served- but that was of no fault of our waitress. She was on the move and attentive. I noticed that most of the wait-staff was hustling and working hard. The food was very good and the atmosphere was what we were looking for. We were a bit disappointed that the Ribeye is no longer an option but they explained why. The Filet was very good and the Grouper Special was delicious- we will be back when we come to town.
Had no reservation, when got there..
Plus supposed to have reservations at 9 o'clock,, they stopped food service at 8:30..!!
Said had no record of my reservation..!!..
Next time I'll actually call the place and speak to a person...
So over all was bad experience in general!!!
1st time here. Great looking place, good food and service was prompt but a little lacking in follow up. , Our server remembered the soup specials but never followed up with us and I guess just assumed that the Leak would be a suitable replacement - it was not. Other than that everything was fine. The sandwiches were outstanding.
I will try them again soon.
Oh, 1 negative - the parking is ridiculous....they need to re stripe the street to allow more cars and retailers should not be allowed to put up "Reserved for such-and-such" (with a threat of towing) and have 4-5 empty spaces in an already parking space lacking town.
I have had several good meals, a few disappointing, and 1 great - this one achieved the 2nd great. It would have earned 5 stars if they had gotten it right the first time and the server was more considerate. After three of us sent back our salmon because it was literally RAW, it came back PERFECT! The meal was OUTSTANDING! My issue with the service, although decent, we had to track him down for another drink and he didn't bother to give us progress updates on our food. It took a long time for it to return. If he had told us they were recooking the entire meal we would have been less anxious. The fourth person in our party ate slowly in consideration of our plight but he was almost finished when ours arrived. As I write this, I wonder...if three of four have to send back their meal, would it be appropriate to take back the fourth and recook it also so everyone dined together??? That might be a public opinion question. Since I was one of the "waiting" I would vote yes.
The meat and cheese plate was great. The pickled veggies that are served with the plate are outstanding. They should offer it as a side dish. I had the chopped salad. This seemed very fresh but was not a true chopped salad. It was just a simple mixed salad. The fried chicken was moist, the crust was crispy but overall tasteless. The dish had no salt. Also, that evening it was served with collard greens (excellent) and mashed potatoes which were also under seasoned. My husband had the ribeye. It was large but not a prime cut of steak. He said it was seasoned well, he ate only half. We had the chess pie for dessert and were very happy with it. Wine by the glass was very good and reasonably priced. Saw many people order the burger. If I ever visit again, I will try that for my entree.
Love eating at this restaurant! Our waiter was a gem...Casey! My only issue was that we made a reservation and they sat us near the kitchen. Two booths were empty but the receptionist would not let us sit there as some else had made a reservation...the booth remain open even after we were on our way out!?!?
A great restaurant in the heart of downtown Franklin across from the Tartan Museum. Made reservations and got seated in a nice booth across from the bar. Ordered an appetizer of homemade pimento chess dip and fresh bread that was very good. The trout was very good and the desert of the hot chocolate with chocolate gelato was too die for. A problem at a nearby table was politely and the staff was very kind and knowlegable.
We had a large party & were accommodated w/o issue. Our server was sufficient. A different server stopped by a couple times & was eager to talk about the menu, what we should definitely try, where items were sourced from, etc. Drink refills were a little slow.
Appetizers were fantastic..try the pickles & the wings (which aren't really wings). Best entree was either shrimp & grits or chefs burger.
Unfortunately we didn't have time to stay for dessert & returned too late in the evening to enjoy after our show. (Despite a server saying we could come back for dessert until 10) Kitchen closes at 9.
Overall a great restaurant tucked away in downtown Franklin. Won't make a special trip for, but if I'm in the area, I'd return.
