Root and Barrel Kitchen
Great restaurant, especially for the area! Scott (the manager), brings his experience from a Michelin two-star restaurant in Chicago, and it really shows.
We have eaten here twice. Both times the servers were excellent, with very good knowledge of the menu and just the right level of attentiveness. The food was almost perfect, and the staff has a good handle on food allergies.
We will be back!
Food overpriced and not that good. Was just okay. Booths are very uncomfortable for sitting. Prices a bit high for area, quality and portion size.
It was New Year's Eve and they were very short-handed. Took 30 minutes to get a round of drinks (two bartenders). Were told by serve staff that kitchen was slammed. Management should have jumped in to assist. One young lady wasn't even an employee and was helping out (very agreeable).
Also website did not mention limited menu for the evening. We will not eat there again.
We enjoyed our New Year’s Eve dinner. Happy we made a reservation since there were large parties, however the restaurant seated us in a cozy area to have a romantic evening.
First time visiting the restaurant we had a great experience. Second time was New Year’s Eve and we were disappointed they did a set menu. Wasn’t the best selection. We would go back though.
My overall experience was very good . There was someone playing the piano and singing that was nice . The food was delicious. I had the short rib and grits and it was something I would definitely order again .
My wife and I were celebrating our 40th anniversary and I made reservations sight unseen and we were more than impressed. We arrived 30 minutes early and were greeted warmly and we seated in less than two minutes. Our server (Nathan) was very pleasant and talked with us until our food arrived. My wife and I agreed that our filets were most certainly the best cooked and presented filets we have EVER had. Our food was hot and arrived quickly. It was all delicious. We have ALREADY recommended Root and Barrel to several friends and my wife posted it on FaceBook.
A really enjoyable dinner. The food was excellent, the service good and the ambiance of the restaurant enjoyable.
I was pleasantly surprised to find an eatery of this quality in such a small town. My wife and I were visiting for a weekend getaway in Franklin. Nice little town to visit. Pimento cheese dip was good. Could have served with something nicer than tortilla chips. Shrimp and grits is a regular order for me wherever we go and these were top end. Chess pie was delicious. We liked this location so. I have we returned the following night just for dessert. Chess pie second night was not near what it was night prior. Burnt crust and half the size on second attempt. Cheesecake was top notch though.
Food was fantastic, service was great. The only complaint was one of the appetizers came out after the main course. (The waiter took it off the check per my request). Everything else was great!
We enjoyed our meal there. I loved the pimento cheese spread and butternut squash soup but my pasta was so so. Husband’s steak and fries were good. Friend liked her chicken. Craft cocktail menu had some fun choices and we shared one piece of chess pie that was excellent.
We had a good of 6 men and ordered several drinks before dinner. The service was slow and had to ask for our drink several times before they were delivered to the table. Once we ordered there were several things that were not available, no filet mignon, no shrimp, etc. The steak were served cold, not cool, cold. Not sure what was going on that night October 17th but overall experience was terrible. Will try a different restaurant next visit to Franklin
Wait staff was very friendly and attentive. I had a reservation and was seated immediately. Food was excellent....North Carolina trout over a unique blend of puréed vegetables and more sautéed veggies on the side. The pimento cheese appetizer was hot, gooey and yummy. House Pinot Grigio was a good value on “Wine Wednesday.” Topped off the meal with a slice of chess pie which was delightful.
Terrible food prep. Took forever and came out cold. Made us late for movie.
Management comped the meal. Been disappointed a number of time with the kitchen service but in the past management never took responsibility before.
Hate to post unpleasant reviews but this was horrible. The drinks served were a joke and the waitress actually agreed and took it off the bill. The trout was paper thin and this is not an exaggeration with slivers of vegetables for $22. My husband got sick from the shrimp and grits which should have been call shrimp and cheese and the menu stated it had sausage which was non-existent. Very disappointing and beyond overpriced.
We were seated quickly and our waiter, John, was attentive and helpful. Novel food items on menu. We had the pimento BLT and Reuben sandwich - both very good. Nice wine and beer menu.
We loved the fried artichoke hearts! It was all yummy.
Root & Barrel had an interesting variety of foods which was what were looking for. Trout deviled eggs, Caesar salad with capers, filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes and season vegetables. Service was good, nice decor, noise was a little above average but no biggie. Cocktails were decent not the best I had. Huge wine selection! Prices absolutely reasonable for the food portion sizes. We Will be back!
We went there for brunch on Sunday only to discover they no longer serve brunch although it is still listed on their Facebook page. I ordered tomato bisque and the bisque was good but the 1/2 sandwich was soggy. My husband ordered a hamburger with fries and it was also soggy with cold fries. Our friend who ordered trout said that it was good. Both of the guys said that the desert (cheesecake and chess pie) was good but I noticed that the crust on my husband's pie was burned. Franklin needs another good restaurant so we were sorry to see that the food is less than average now. Root and Barrel does not seem to be able to remain consistently good. This has been a problem since they opened. Perhaps they cannot hire and keep a qualified chef.
We love this place!!! We have a home in Franklin and when we come to town it is our favorite. The service is impeccable, atmosphere good for any occasion, and the food is spot on . My adult son ordered his filet minjon “bloody” honestly they made it charred and beautifully rare. Don’t miss this great restaurant, our seafood special was salmon and was equally special. We’ll be back. Thank you Root and Barrel.
High price for food, no children’s menu. Nothing chocolate on desert menu. Will not be back
The food was good but the portions too small for the price. About the only restaurant that I have been to that did not offer bread. My entree came with very minimal side items.
Amazing food and staff! We had our 18 month year old son and they were so helpful and accommodating. A gem for anyone in the area on vacation!
This place never lets me down. Best restaurant in the region with great service. Enjoy
the quantity of food was too small and the flavor of my husband's food was disappointing. The service was great but we were not impressed with the dinner food
Wonderful creative dishes, sides and soups - plus amazing burgers!
Had lunch with my wife and cousin. Easy parking, nice booth where we could converse. We had the daily special -- grilled ham & cheese on wheatberry bread and it was exceptional, along with house-made kettle chips. We will definitely go back if in the Franklin area.
We had a planned Mother's Day dinner that went from four to six people at the last minute. The staff were extremely accommodating. The food was excellent, including satisfying a rather picky 8-yr. old's pallette. Service was great. The meals all arrived at the same time and everyone was happy. We will be back.
From the start of the process I wasn’t pleased at all. When I called to confirm and make sure my open table reservation was received the young lady who answered the phone was rude! Very unprofessional! But by the day of our reservation I was sold! The manager called the day of just to make sure everything was set and offer a glass of champagne for the Bride! We arrived and service was great food was outstanding and over all experience was amazing!!
The Food is Always Great and the Service is fantastic. Love eating here
Great food, cooked to perfection! Awesome service from Holly our waitress!
Service was very slow. We were sitting for 15 minutes before our server came to our table. We had reservations and they were not very busy.
St Patrick’s Day
Love the atmosphere, service and the pimento cheese appetizer. We return here on every trip up. Thank you Root and Barrel!!
Had the short ribs over mashed potatoes with a demi-glace . Potatoes were cold. sent back to the kitchen. It was returned without the demi-glace. Short ribs were excellent. Wait staff delightful
This was our first experience at this restaurant since the name (and management?) change some months ago. First I want to say that though I checked "no" to the question whether I'd recommend the place to a friend, I might -- depending on what the friend was looking for.
The service, in my opinion, was only a little better than abysmal. We were seated promptly and given menus; we asked for water and said we'd wait until we decided what to eat before ordering wine. After quite a wait, our server returned and we gave her our order including wine. We ordered the fairly pricy filet, and said clearly "no mashed potatoes". We ordered the mac and cheese instead. After another wait, our server came and apologized that someone elst had picked up our wine but they would repour right away. The wine and the steaks appeared at about the same time, with mounds of mashed potatoes on each plate supporting the filets. The person who brought the steaks (not the person who took our order) offered us the potatoes to keep, suggesting one of the other side items. My wife told her she couldn't stand mashed potatoes on her plate so they went and removed them. The mac and cheese arrived next.
I don't want to belabor this further. Franklin is not a large town, but can easily stand a nice sitdown restaurant. Unfortunately, we probably won't be returning to Root & Barrel for a while. If we see reviews that indicate improvement in the service, we might give it a shot later. The food is good, but pricey; for the price the restaurant should offer more professional service.
Nice atmosphere for a quiet dinner. Staff was friendly and eager to please. Food was excellent and plentiful. Can’t wait to go back.
Enjoyable experience. Very good coffee. Was never offered any bread...should serve some
bread with the meal. Should have a little specialty to keep people interested!
Unfortunately I do not remeber our bartenders name. He was a younger gentelman who said he has worked there awhile. He was fantastic. I asked for a old fashion and kinda told him how I enjoy it, after he listened too me babble about it he said trust me I make a great one! He was correct it was the best old fashioned I've ever had. On top of it we had the dinner feature of crab legs and ribeye. Our food was so tasty and again our bartender paired some red wine nicely for my meal. We were in town for a Tracy Lawrence concert and when we come back through y'all will def be one of our first stops! Thank you!
