Voted “Dayton’s Best Chef” in 2012, Dana Downs’s first restaurant, Roost Italian, is the culmination of her years of working in Dayton’s finest culinary establishments. Roost takes traditional Italian foods and utilizes modern techniques and ingredients, developing unique flavors to create what Dana calls “Modern Italian.” The dinner-only restaurant just completed a renovation — turning the courtyard into a four-season room, with rolling garage doors that open when weather permits, and adding more tables to her mecca of food in the Historic Oregon District.

Staff were very friendly and efficient. Lindsey did a great job as server. Our room design was sleek and modern but could have used a little more light and visual interest (e.g. art work on walls). Caesar salad, artisan bread were first rate. cocktail (Manhattan) was just right. Our entrees were all well received by all.
Desserts were a hit. Overall, very nice, highly recommended.

Great service, wonderful meals. This is a hidden gem in the Oregon District in Dayton. Would recommend a nice dinner here for anyone.

Thanks to all ...we’ve known the chef for years ... but haven’t been to Dayton in a few years... the experience was better than before... she has just enhanced the whole entire process, presentation and specifically the food... great flavors...

New to Dayton. We love to eat out. Food, wine and service were excellent. Split the mushroom salad, then chicken Asiago and pork chops....moist and very tasty. Matthew was an excellent waiter.

Roost punches above its weight class for a town Dayton’s size. The wine list is not excessive but is well curated with broad representation and excellent pairing opportunity. We started with the decadent Arancini followed by an arugula salad topped with earthy warm mushrooms and a balsamic dressing. For dinner I had the pork chop which was cooked to perfection and frenched which made for a nice presentation. It was topped with a fig and bacon jam and sat atop a bed of creamy polenta; delish! All of this was wrapped with great service. Our waiter was attentive but not intrusive. We got lucky and visited on Roost’s 8th anniversary and were presented with a complimentary sparkling rose “nightcap” which was a nice palate cleanser. Great experience!

Excellent food, service, ambiance. Only a couple food nit picks that didn’t quite meet expectations (but they were high). We prefer Brussels sprouts crispy roasted, ours were tender but wilted style. Meatballs were a little dense. The triple cake was good but not outstanding. The rest was all excellent. Again very nit picky, would not hesitate to recommend to anyone visiting Dayton area or for locals. Prices were reasonable for the level of quality of service, and a better value than some other local establishments with tired ambiance and menus for sure.

Our service was not good at all. We waited a long time for everything, they forgot to take 1 of the peoples orders at our table then it took forever for them to come back so we could order it. We asked the waitress about good shareable apps for a party of six and she recommended the scallops when they arrived they were only in the order. Once our meals finally came most of them we cold. When making the reservation & when being seated I mentioned we were there for a birthday and I would like something for the birthday boy, which they did not do until I flagged our waitress down in the kitchen and had to ask again, then all they did was drop a piece of cake of with the wrong person and left. I did not expect them to sing or anything but at least a happy birthday would have been nice. This is NOT the experience I expect for a meal that cost me $400. I will not be back and I will not recommend this restaurant. Not the birthday experience I expected when I made the reservation

There are mostly great things about Roost--the food is excellent and this visit was no exception, the cocktails are beautifully made and the service is knowledgeable about the menu, attentive without hovering, and very professional while friendly as well. The only thing we don't enjoy are some of the business policies--charging the additional gratuity for parties of more than four, although I understand the space is small, and adding the tax into the entire amount of a bar bill as opposed to itemizing it out on the bill.

Mussels in tomato base were some of the best we've ever had. Same for the brussel sprout chips. Loved the ambiance, reminded us of restaurants in bigger cities.

Will make this a regular stop every time we visit Dayton. We started with the arancini. They had an added twist with pepperoni inside which was delicious. My husband had the veal chop and I had the ravioli, both were excellent. There were so many interesting dishes we wanted to try that we will have to go back.

Delicious meal start to finish! Great ambience, was able to enjoy dinner without feeling like anyone could listen to our dinner conversation. Waiter was attentive without hovering. All my dishes were delicious especially the salmon on risotto.

Unfortunately we were unable to host our meeting at your location. We were told prior to the meeting that we would be place in an area where we could discuss business, but that it would not be in the private room. Once we got there it was very nosey to have a meeting so we had to leave. The manager was very nice, but didn't offer any additional solutions. He said that typically Thursdays are not packed, but that night they had to use the room he originally had us in for our meeting to accommodate the other customers. It was a little frustrating because we had some of our top community executives attending the meeting, but we made it work by leaving and going down to Salar. The valet parking attendant was very nice and helpful. As was the young lady at the front desk.

This was our first time at Roost Italian and we easily understood why they have such a great reputation. The food was delicious. The warm goat cheese appetizer was excellent and a very generous serving for an appetizer. The mushroom crusted scallops entree was outstanding. Service was absolutely first rate. We definitely will be returning.

Service was excellent.
Food was wonderful, only reason I only gave it a four, was because I found a hair in the mashed potatoes. We got the beef tips and the swordfish.
The strawberry beret drink is awful.
The old fashioned was heavenly!
We will be back, although not for a while, as this was our anniversary and our bill was a little high for the experience we had.

I had made a reservation on line so we were seated when we arrived. For some reason which our waiter explained our entrees took a long time to be served. Compared to other restaurants that I have dined at in the Dayton area your individual glasses of wine appeared to be much higher. I ordered a gin and tonic which was very good.
