I love this restaurant and I had my wedding dinner here years ago but this is the first time I was disappointed and only with the lobster appetizer which is the main reason I come for. It was undercooked and not cut all the way through and what was cut was too big. Everything else was great and I didn’t want to complain because other people were at the table and it was a first date. Other than the lobster being undercooked everything else was perfect.
My first time expieriencing hibatchi and it was amazing! The food was outstanding the service was great! I will definitely be back with friends and family.
Food was delicious, and my Mai Tai was also delicious. It's a good restaurant close to our home.
My heart is actually broken. I've been a patron of Ron of Japan for several decades now, since I was a little girl and have celebrated many birthdays here in fact. It has been at least a couple years since I've been, so I decided to bring new friends to help me celebrate this year's birthday. I was gravely disappointed pretty much from the moment we walked in. Table was not ready despite a reservation. We were told to wait at the bar. The bar area was so poorly lit, no one bothered to guide us over there, and there was NO waitress to offer us a drink and they were clearly understaffed as the bar tender seemed frantic and tables were dirty. Finally led to our table. The waitress took forever to come over and take a drink order. My friend ordered a frozen drink that came over ice, not frozen. I ordered a martini that was not cold and had no olive or anything?! We waited longer just to get our orders placed. Finally the chef arrived and his personality was cold and it seemed he just didn't care to be there. He did not steam the lobster with the egg sauce long enough, which, the egg sauce is the best part of the meal, and it was not as enjoyable as it should have been. The filet tasted odd, I'm not sure why, but my guess is just not a good quality of meat. I haven't been this disappointed in a restaurant experience in a long time, and it was quite an expensive disappointment, only adding insult to injury. They need to step up their game. Not sure I will ever be back. Really sad because it use to always be exceptional. Not anymore. Very upsetting:(
Ordered surf and turf fillet migon and my husband order crown fillet both fillets were tough, never happened before quality going down. Reservations were at 5:00pm didn’t open the doors until 5:00pm we had to sit in the car for 25 minutes cause we arrived early to have a drink at the bar, i wish i would of known.
Great service and fantastic food. Ron of Japan has been our go to birthday restaurant for years.
We love going to Ron of Japan for special occasions, especially anniversaries, birthdays, and Valentines day. It's our tradition. We are always very pleased when our chef is Ataya San from Japan, he always does such a wonderful job preparing our meals.
My filet was so tender and cooked to perfection. My husband had scallops and calamari which were also good. Shrimp was good but a little over cooked . As it was the day before Valentines Day, it wasn’t crowded and we weren’t rushed . Although we had to wait 10 min past our reservation time
Which was 5:30.
Pre valentines dinner date, great value for the Shogun special and the lobster was HUGE!
An old format, nothing new or different, but solid, dependable execution with excellent service and good fresh ingredients. Sometimes, you just want something a bit familiar and a little nostalgic. Ron of Japan is always a good bet for an engaging, good meal.
As usual the food at ROJ was good but the service always comes up short. Drinks were forgotten and turned out to be wrong (they were exchanged for free). The food order was placed in a reasonable amount of time and delivered without errors. The chef was nice. The ambience is OK. Just make sure you wear clothes that won't absorb and retain cooking smells!
Ron of Japan is one of our favorite places to dine, always happy with the service and food. We have become regulars, and appreciate how the staff now recognizes us. We love watching the food being prepared, and are happy to bring whatever we can't finish home for tomorrow's lunch. Although we typically get a private table during off-hours, we have met some fantastic fellow diners over the years. Highly recommended!
Chosen by one of our kids to celebrate birthday. The food is very average and very overpriced. I wouldn’t return again. Not impressed.
Outstanding food. Service was slow which is very uncommon for this restaurant. They appeared to be short handed when we were there. Still one of my families favorite places.
Been there many times but this last time was not great. We were sat 30 minutes late. Our waiter was MIA most of the night. The entire mean was so slow that unfortunately that tainted the outlook. Hate to say it but we'll be taking a break from RonJan.
A favorite birthday lovale
Hour and half wait for our table which had indeed been reserved, then a 45 minutes wait for our cook. Food was generally bland. The hibachi performance that was once the star of the show was basically just simple cooking at this point.
Perhaps 40 plus years of being in operation has simply taken its toll
I’ve been to many hibachi restaurants. The look and feel of this place was amazing. Pricing higher than most for quantity of food. Food quality was good but overall flavor not as great. Really missed ginger sauce and mustard like other places offer
Great staff, beautiful setting and amazing food! Wonderful evening - thanks to the team 😀
Had the teppan meal. Tasteless. Portions were decent, but this is an a la carte Japanese steakhouse. You want fried rice extra, you want salad, extra, you want shrimp appetizer, extra. Quite expensive. But the problem is the food is prepared and had no taste. Squirt of soy on everything. That's it. Dipping sauce is just a small bowl of soy. No ginger, no other sauces for seafood. Just soy. Hope you like soy. There are much better choices in the area. Kampai is much better.
It was so smoky in there you almost couldn't breathe. I remember it being a lot better the last time I was there two years ago, but I won't be going back. My jacket still smells like burnt hibachi. Our server was not attentive at all, our cook kept having to call to her for refills and she kept coughing all over us while taking our orders--probably because of all the smoke. Please ROJ get your ventilation checked...that cannot be good for guests or employees. I hate to leave bad reviews, but this was one of the worst dining experience I've had in a long time. The smoke was unbearable.
Fantastic food, friendly staff, and overall a great experience.
Food was poor quality. Vegetable were not fresh. The soy saucer cooked with tasted old. This was not worth the cost.
Our family has been going to Ron of Japan's for more than 20 years to celebrate New Year's Eve. Always fun, they do their best to accommodate large groups (there were 12 of us this year and we sat together). It's fun to watch the chef cook at the table. The food is very good. Not cheap but worthwhile. We'll be going again next year!
The sirloin steak was ordered and wasn't too bade though it was a bit dry after cooking, probably should have been cut after it cooked a bit so as to avoid overcooking. The green tea ice cream was creamy, more like custard but good though we couldn't taste much of the "green tea" in it. The sushi roll was nicely presented tasted good; vegetables was nice portion. Salmon was probably best dish ordered, nice flavor not dry, tender. One of the bowls of the white rice tasted a bit undercooked in part of its portion. Service was very nice though.
We went on Christmas night and I had very low expectations. We were a full table with 9 in our party. Our reservation was originally made for 5 people and 2 days before we wanted to add another family with us. I called and even though the restaurant was full for reservations they were willing to accommodate our party without any grief. The restaurant was very busy but we never felt rushed. Our server was friendly and happy. She was also very helpful with the kids at the table trying to teach them how to use chopsticks and even transferred their food from the hot plates on the grill to smaller plates closer to them. It's been a while since we had such great service and we appreciated it. The food was all fresh and cooked to perfection. We all left happy, full and talking about how wonderful our evening was.
Food good as usual. The chef this time was not so good. Steak was cut very large, several pieces of shrimp tail were left after it was put on the plate.
Lobster tail was not completely cooked. Tasted great next day after nuking
Even though we make a reservation, we always have to wait. Nine of us were crammed into a table for eight. It was very smoky. Prices are through the ceiling and service is unexceptional. Server did not know bar menu well and had trouble opening wine bottle.
I am a frequent customer of Ron of Japan in downtown Chicago always great food and good time. This time I decided to check this location out for my daughters 16th birthday with a group of 6 total and my over all experience was HORRIBLE!! The food was not flavorful the rice seemed to mushy the egg yolk on my lobster wasn’t cooked properly. The chef seemed bothered when I asked for the steak to be well done as well as when we asked for small plates. Not sure if I’ll ever come back or even recommend the restaurant to anyone.
