My filet was so tender and cooked to perfection. My husband had scallops and calamari which were also good. Shrimp was good but a little over cooked . As it was the day before Valentines Day, it wasn’t crowded and we weren’t rushed . Although we had to wait 10 min past our reservation time

An old format, nothing new or different, but solid, dependable execution with excellent service and good fresh ingredients. Sometimes, you just want something a bit familiar and a little nostalgic. Ron of Japan is always a good bet for an engaging, good meal.
As usual the food at ROJ was good but the service always comes up short. Drinks were forgotten and turned out to be wrong (they were exchanged for free). The food order was placed in a reasonable amount of time and delivered without errors. The chef was nice. The ambience is OK. Just make sure you wear clothes that won't absorb and retain cooking smells!
Ron of Japan is one of our favorite places to dine, always happy with the service and food. We have become regulars, and appreciate how the staff now recognizes us. We love watching the food being prepared, and are happy to bring whatever we can't finish home for tomorrow's lunch. Although we typically get a private table during off-hours, we have met some fantastic fellow diners over the years. Highly recommended!
Hour and half wait for our table which had indeed been reserved, then a 45 minutes wait for our cook. Food was generally bland. The hibachi performance that was once the star of the show was basically just simple cooking at this point.
Perhaps 40 plus years of being in operation has simply taken its toll
Had the teppan meal. Tasteless. Portions were decent, but this is an a la carte Japanese steakhouse. You want fried rice extra, you want salad, extra, you want shrimp appetizer, extra. Quite expensive. But the problem is the food is prepared and had no taste. Squirt of soy on everything. That's it. Dipping sauce is just a small bowl of soy. No ginger, no other sauces for seafood. Just soy. Hope you like soy. There are much better choices in the area. Kampai is much better.
It was so smoky in there you almost couldn't breathe. I remember it being a lot better the last time I was there two years ago, but I won't be going back. My jacket still smells like burnt hibachi. Our server was not attentive at all, our cook kept having to call to her for refills and she kept coughing all over us while taking our orders--probably because of all the smoke. Please ROJ get your ventilation checked...that cannot be good for guests or employees. I hate to leave bad reviews, but this was one of the worst dining experience I've had in a long time. The smoke was unbearable.
Our family has been going to Ron of Japan's for more than 20 years to celebrate New Year's Eve. Always fun, they do their best to accommodate large groups (there were 12 of us this year and we sat together). It's fun to watch the chef cook at the table. The food is very good. Not cheap but worthwhile. We'll be going again next year!
The sirloin steak was ordered and wasn't too bade though it was a bit dry after cooking, probably should have been cut after it cooked a bit so as to avoid overcooking. The green tea ice cream was creamy, more like custard but good though we couldn't taste much of the "green tea" in it. The sushi roll was nicely presented tasted good; vegetables was nice portion. Salmon was probably best dish ordered, nice flavor not dry, tender. One of the bowls of the white rice tasted a bit undercooked in part of its portion. Service was very nice though.
We went on Christmas night and I had very low expectations. We were a full table with 9 in our party. Our reservation was originally made for 5 people and 2 days before we wanted to add another family with us. I called and even though the restaurant was full for reservations they were willing to accommodate our party without any grief. The restaurant was very busy but we never felt rushed. Our server was friendly and happy. She was also very helpful with the kids at the table trying to teach them how to use chopsticks and even transferred their food from the hot plates on the grill to smaller plates closer to them. It's been a while since we had such great service and we appreciated it. The food was all fresh and cooked to perfection. We all left happy, full and talking about how wonderful our evening was.
Even though we make a reservation, we always have to wait. Nine of us were crammed into a table for eight. It was very smoky. Prices are through the ceiling and service is unexceptional. Server did not know bar menu well and had trouble opening wine bottle.
I am a frequent customer of Ron of Japan in downtown Chicago always great food and good time. This time I decided to check this location out for my daughters 16th birthday with a group of 6 total and my over all experience was HORRIBLE!! The food was not flavorful the rice seemed to mushy the egg yolk on my lobster wasn’t cooked properly. The chef seemed bothered when I asked for the steak to be well done as well as when we asked for small plates. Not sure if I’ll ever come back or even recommend the restaurant to anyone.
Ron of Japan has been a favorite of my family for over 30 Years! We have celebrated many special events at Rons over the years. When my children come back to visit now living in different states and country’s, Ron’s is a must go destination. The food is consistently very good. Does not disappoint!
We came for my cousin’s birthday,what a disappointment in the food,definitely wasn’t satisfying,my 1st,last time at this this location,downtown is better,we were in a corner,like animals all the way in the back,customer service was horrible from the waitress to the cook
Brought two small children and their grandparents to watch the Teppan-style cooking of Ron of Japan, and it was a pretty neat experience. Complaints: slow service and very difficult-to-understand English of our server, music a bit too loud. Praises: excellent food, great meal, amazing atmosphere, and decent price for what you get.
Big disappointment, over priced, poor quality. Seated at a communal table, even when there was plenty of room. The other family had small kids. It made our celebration and conversation awkward. Food was not great and the chef that prepared it had no personality or interest. He didn't speak to us, cooked and served the food and left. Never got offered second round of drinks or refills. Should have read the bad reviews in advance. Would not go back.
The Northbrook Ron of Japan is typically a good experience and I have not yet been disappointed. My wife and I went on a date night. This location has come back to life over the last year, maybe due to the new businesses across the street. I enjoy the food and the atmosphere. My only criticism would be that the cooks are less colorful in their performance than in past years. Part of the experience is the show. I am also accustomed to drinking my sake from a glass, not a pull top can. To the staff, go extra mile there and provide a glass. This isn't a roadside bar. Our waitress was very young, but attentive, maybe to a fault. I would scale it back just a hair there, but I certainly prefer that to the alternative. Lastly, use the coat-check when you get there. If you hang your coat on the back of your chair, it will smell of fried food for a week.
