We have dined here frequently. The menu is predictable, and everything is prepared table-side. Service was attentive, and food was cooked to order.
Food was terrific - always the best... Prices appear to be higher but manageable... Gets a little warm even after prep is completed - maybe that gets people moving on... Great dinner!
We had reservations for 8pm and we had to wait until 8:20 for a table. People who came after us were seated before which I thought wasn’t right. When the host was notified all he could say was sorry people took too long to leave. My sake had what looks to be cherry stems in the bottle. Looks like they bottle was not cleaned well from prior use. I pointed out to our server and he corrected it right away and said the manager would be by to speak with me. Really wasn’t necessary but ok. The manager never came by. At the end the waiter said they had comped the sake and the manager apologizes for what happened. I also ordered a California roll appetizer which look like it was thrown together (really not worth the $16 we paid for it because if they did have king crab in them it was not noticeable) and we didn’t get the appetizer until the chef was already cooking and serving our food. Our server was great and attentive and apologized for the delay. We have been to Ron of Japan several times and never had an issue until this time. Quality has gone down significantly and really not worth the price we paid. It will likely be a very long time if ever before we return.
Decent meal, not the usual ingredients I'm used to in the Northeast for tepanyaki which usually comes with a miso soup, ginger salad, and actual beef chunks instead of ground beef in the fried rice. Also expected the 'fire' to come early on in the show, not at the end - but that's just preference. The filet mignon was very tender and delicious, the chicken could have used a bit more flavor.
Ron’s is always yummy. Service spotty but with a super mai tai, and food that keeps coming from your hibachi chef, you won’t care unless your mai tai is empty.
Quite disappointed when comparing experiences at other Japanese hibachi themed restaurants. Seating too tight to eat comfortably (not enough elbow room and not enough surface area for drink, utensils, and plates/bowls to avoid hitting either a glass or neighbor), zero show skills by the chef (manager stated they focus on quality of food rather than chef showing off with skills), quality of food was actually disappointing (have had better food quality and great showmanship by chef at other comparable restaurants). I won’t go back when I have other options for hibachi/entertainment for my kids.
We dine here frequently. Management really needs to keep the families with kids in line. Kids using cell phone lights, walking around, shouting, loud, obnoxious. This isn't Chuck E Cheese. This happens more and more. Waiter was the worst. Not attentive at all.
We love the Ron of Japan restaurants. This was our first time in Northbrook and the decor was exceptional. We love the food, be sure to ask for the egg yolk sauce on seafood! Will be back again soon.
It was all good
Use to a bit of a show and miss the traditional attire of the employees. Our cook was very nice and food was good. I feel your prizes are very high.
My first time there and it was so amazing. Everyone was very nice. The food was amazing and the atmosphere was great. Would definitely go again.
Our fabulous chef cooked my filet mignon a perfect medium rare. My husband had calamari scallops and shrimp. Ron’s has the best egg sauce... it’s to die for. We dine there every 2-3 weeks and just love it!
Why do people love this place?!
food was great! the egg sauce over the shrimp and lobster is unreal. make sure to request some to be added to your fried rice! only thing was we were a group of 6 and there were lots of tables open but they decided to seat us with another group. i understand this but it would have been nice to just sit with my family.
Great food great drinks great time Just wish the ventilation was a little better
The seating was a bit crowded for a teppanyaki type restaurant. Love their special egg sauce and beef fried rice - it's what we go for. The steak is a little bland but great dipped in their teriyaki.
We have been going here for years. Moved away and drove 4 hours to come back to celebrate my daughters birthday. We ordered the Shoguns. Best lobster ever! Chef was fantastic, food was excellent, as usual. Our only complaint was that the music was quite loud. Can't wait to go back.
Terrible service! Called to see if we could sit early and they said no problem come in. Then they sat us down and made us wait 25 minutes before taking our order. Had small kids so they were miserable. Never apologized. Then dinner was equally slow. For a restaurant that expensive it’s a shame.
I was very disappointed it took about 10 minutes for us to get our drinks no one came to see how we were doing I don't know if i would go back
Great place and amazing atmosphere loved the food everyone was very polite.
Our kids love coming here for their birthdays. We came and were seated with another group celebrating a birthday... also, we had a lone diner at the table (as can happen) who sat and ate with headphones.
We had a good time. The chef was very good. He accomadated our requests for extra egg sauce on our fried rice. He cooked my son's steak to perfection... I tried a bite. It was the best taste of steak I've ever had here.
We skipped dessert as we had cake at home.
A good experience dining with a fun group; the lone diner was a little weird.
We love to go to Ron of Japan for the shrimp and egg sauce . They are amazing. I also love the salad dressing it's unique and I love the taste.
Everything was cooked well except for the chicken which was to well done
Overpriced for the food compared to other places with same menu. Entertainment-cook was lacking. Wait staff was good.
I love this restaurant and I had my wedding dinner here years ago but this is the first time I was disappointed and only with the lobster appetizer which is the main reason I come for. It was undercooked and not cut all the way through and what was cut was too big. Everything else was great and I didn’t want to complain because other people were at the table and it was a first date. Other than the lobster being undercooked everything else was perfect.
Food was delicious, and my Mai Tai was also delicious. It's a good restaurant close to our home.
My first time expieriencing hibatchi and it was amazing! The food was outstanding the service was great! I will definitely be back with friends and family.
My heart is actually broken. I've been a patron of Ron of Japan for several decades now, since I was a little girl and have celebrated many birthdays here in fact. It has been at least a couple years since I've been, so I decided to bring new friends to help me celebrate this year's birthday. I was gravely disappointed pretty much from the moment we walked in. Table was not ready despite a reservation. We were told to wait at the bar. The bar area was so poorly lit, no one bothered to guide us over there, and there was NO waitress to offer us a drink and they were clearly understaffed as the bar tender seemed frantic and tables were dirty. Finally led to our table. The waitress took forever to come over and take a drink order. My friend ordered a frozen drink that came over ice, not frozen. I ordered a martini that was not cold and had no olive or anything?! We waited longer just to get our orders placed. Finally the chef arrived and his personality was cold and it seemed he just didn't care to be there. He did not steam the lobster with the egg sauce long enough, which, the egg sauce is the best part of the meal, and it was not as enjoyable as it should have been. The filet tasted odd, I'm not sure why, but my guess is just not a good quality of meat. I haven't been this disappointed in a restaurant experience in a long time, and it was quite an expensive disappointment, only adding insult to injury. They need to step up their game. Not sure I will ever be back. Really sad because it use to always be exceptional. Not anymore. Very upsetting:(
Ordered surf and turf fillet migon and my husband order crown fillet both fillets were tough, never happened before quality going down. Reservations were at 5:00pm didn’t open the doors until 5:00pm we had to sit in the car for 25 minutes cause we arrived early to have a drink at the bar, i wish i would of known.
Great service and fantastic food. Ron of Japan has been our go to birthday restaurant for years.
We love going to Ron of Japan for special occasions, especially anniversaries, birthdays, and Valentines day. It's our tradition. We are always very pleased when our chef is Ataya San from Japan, he always does such a wonderful job preparing our meals.
My filet was so tender and cooked to perfection. My husband had scallops and calamari which were also good. Shrimp was good but a little over cooked . As it was the day before Valentines Day, it wasn’t crowded and we weren’t rushed . Although we had to wait 10 min past our reservation time
Which was 5:30.
Pre valentines dinner date, great value for the Shogun special and the lobster was HUGE!
An old format, nothing new or different, but solid, dependable execution with excellent service and good fresh ingredients. Sometimes, you just want something a bit familiar and a little nostalgic. Ron of Japan is always a good bet for an engaging, good meal.
As usual the food at ROJ was good but the service always comes up short. Drinks were forgotten and turned out to be wrong (they were exchanged for free). The food order was placed in a reasonable amount of time and delivered without errors. The chef was nice. The ambience is OK. Just make sure you wear clothes that won't absorb and retain cooking smells!
Ron of Japan is one of our favorite places to dine, always happy with the service and food. We have become regulars, and appreciate how the staff now recognizes us. We love watching the food being prepared, and are happy to bring whatever we can't finish home for tomorrow's lunch. Although we typically get a private table during off-hours, we have met some fantastic fellow diners over the years. Highly recommended!
Chosen by one of our kids to celebrate birthday. The food is very average and very overpriced. I wouldn’t return again. Not impressed.
Outstanding food. Service was slow which is very uncommon for this restaurant. They appeared to be short handed when we were there. Still one of my families favorite places.
Been there many times but this last time was not great. We were sat 30 minutes late. Our waiter was MIA most of the night. The entire mean was so slow that unfortunately that tainted the outlook. Hate to say it but we'll be taking a break from RonJan.
