Ron of Japan Steakhouse - Northbrook Ratings and Reviews
Big disappointment, over priced, poor quality. Seated at a communal table, even when there was plenty of room. The other family had small kids. It made our celebration and conversation awkward. Food was not great and the chef that prepared it had no personality or interest. He didn't speak to us, cooked and served the food and left. Never got offered second round of drinks or refills. Should have read the bad reviews in advance. Would not go back.
The Northbrook Ron of Japan is typically a good experience and I have not yet been disappointed. My wife and I went on a date night. This location has come back to life over the last year, maybe due to the new businesses across the street. I enjoy the food and the atmosphere. My only criticism would be that the cooks are less colorful in their performance than in past years. Part of the experience is the show. I am also accustomed to drinking my sake from a glass, not a pull top can. To the staff, go extra mile there and provide a glass. This isn't a roadside bar. Our waitress was very young, but attentive, maybe to a fault. I would scale it back just a hair there, but I certainly prefer that to the alternative. Lastly, use the coat-check when you get there. If you hang your coat on the back of your chair, it will smell of fried food for a week.
We love Ron of Japan but did we really had a poor experience the other night. We came for a birthday celebration on Monday night and despite being a slow night they jammed us into a table with another party and it was just too crowded. Immediately after us they sat tables of only four people. The fan above the table was working poorly and the smoke from the cooking surface was blowing in our face the entire time. They also messed up our order but were quick to fix it when it was mentioned.
We're going to rethink Ron of Japan considering the other options available in the area.
The waitress was quite careful to get our order down correctly, repeating it. (I appreciated her continual service.)
Thought our chef was great: very well trained. He took great care of each of us, including the egg sauce he ladled on for the family that lusted for it eating at our table.
Left quite satisfied and of course full, carrying leftovers.
I was there with my family for my Birthday 9/10. We always come for my birthday and my Nephews. I told them it was my Birthday. But I did not get my Birthday Japanese song or to have my Birthday candle. They must of forgot. That was the only sad experience.
Extremely disappointing. The server assigned to the table could not understand orders resulting in several mix-ups throughout the evening. We placed a beverage order during the meal having to remind the server 20-minutes later regarding the request. The chef assigned to the table was not engaging (barely spoke to the patrons) and very difficult to understand. The entire course felt rushed with one meal element coming after another (no breaks). There was no time to enjoy and savor each course. The table had been over allocated creating a challenge for everyone to have enough room to eat/sit comfortably. This further became an issue when the server delivered each meal component on top of one another. Overall, the service and quality was not worth the cost. Will not be visiting again anytime soon.
Fabulous evening! This place has it all! Incredible drinks; try the Super Mai Tai; you won't be disappointed! Fantastic sushi...just try their Dynamite Roll; wow! Scallops, the best Calamari and NO ONE beats their Shogun Dinner... the incredible tender Filet and the sweetest, freshest Lobster! Hibachi at its best! Service is like family.
I've been going there for 35 yrs and I can tell you it is the best teppanyaki around, by far. The salad dressing is amazing and original. The shrimp with the egg sauce is delectable. The beef fried; come on son! The lobster with the egg sauce; insanely delicious. The soy sauce has a secret ingredient in it that takes it to a new level of umami. Yoshi is the best chef we've ever experienced there. Everything was cooked absolutely perfectly. He is something special. Be prepared to take all your clothes to the cleaners afterwards to get the delicious stank out. The music playlist is suspect though; a weird mix of pop and oldies. Bring back the traditional Japanese music!
I can truly say this is my last time coming to Ron of Japan. The person cooking the food was an older man that must have had a bad day. Every time we asked a question (or answered one of his) he would wave us off and act like we didn't exist. Even my 9yr old said she didn't want to return because he was rude, which was sad to hear because this was her birthday dinner. As for the food, it lacked flavor and the meat was dry (definitely needed the sauce). On a positive note, the server was very nice and really sweet to all of the people at the table.
I have been coming to Ron of Japan perhaps for 25 or 30 years. My visit this past Sunday will likely be my last. As soon as I paid my bill ($225.00 for five, no drinks or soft drinks), I felt completely ripped off! The cost of their staple "Crown" entrees (the high $30, low $40 range) are just not justified. Add a couple more dollars for fried rice which absolutely should be a free option although I recognize this is a practice shared by most in this industry. The food is good, certainly not spectacular. Gone are the days when the "chef" tried to entertain while cooking. No circuses here. Perhaps my biggest disappointment was allowing them to shuffle my family to the room all the way to the back. It was hot, loud and completely lacked the Pacific atmosphere of their main dining room. We were seated with another larger family and were uncomfortably squeezed in. Because of all the noise generated in that small space, we couldn't even converse. The ventilation needs to be loud for obvious reasons (although I smelled like fried oil when I left) but given the number of power vents back there, they need to remove a table or two to cut down on noise. Shame on me for not speaking up when they tried seating us but I didn't want to hurt the feelings of the young family already seated. This was supposed to be a celebration for our son leaving for college but the venue let me down.
Our chef was great and very accommodating with our special requests like cooking up the shrimp tails for us! Our server, Rosa, was terrific!! She also took very special care of us with extra noodles in the soup and extra salad dressing. We've been going for 20+ years and it just keeps getting better!!
