I have gone here for the last 20 years and the food has definitely gone down. Shrimp were small and not a good selection. Beef fried rice was hard and lacked enough seasoning. Quality and taste aren’t up to par! Not going back!
Our waitress and chef were outstanding, maybe the experience great. Also, with COVID they really followed strict protocols and made things feel normal and safe
We have been going for 40 years. Food was excellent. Prices seem to have gone up a lot in last 2-3 years. We appreciated the steps with social distancing. Service was great.
We celebrated a birthday with great food and service
Good food. Great atmosphere. Definitely go again for a special occasion
RoJ is an old staple for celebrations with my siblings. Have not been there for years. It did not disappoint! We were there for the egg sauce and our chef gave it to us in abundance. Thank you! Shrimp good, chicken good. Filet mignon while the amount was good, the meat itself was not as tender and juicy as we were used to. The fried rice lacked seasoning(not as we remembered) no ginger sauce. Salad dressing was more mayonnaise based than we recall. Overall we enjoyed it and had a nice meal. Worth 65$ per person? Probably not. Just not as perfect as our memories but good.
Great place ! We have been going for over 30 years
ROJ is our birthday place go to. We had an amazing experience as usual!
Waitress was rushing us.. then when we asked if we can have happy birthday sang to one of our friend’s, she stated well I can’t sing it in Spanish but I can in English and Japanese “ we never asked her to sing in Spanish nor did we speak Spanish at all in front of her. She needs to work on her customer service
I've enjoyed ROJ for years now. Starting at downtown Chicago and now Northbrook location as well. Not 1 bad experience yet! The food will have you looking forward to your next visit!
This was the best Ron of Japan experience that my wife and I have had and we dine at the restaurant quite often. The table size and spacing was great for our party of six and we felt completely safe the entire time (tables were very well spaced out due to the pandemic).
The service was exceptional and our chef was top notch. Cannot wait to return.
Jose was an amazing chef!! Took the time to make extra egg sauce and even double fires for our son! Wonderful experience
Birthday dinner
Graduation
We had a wonderful time with excellent service and delicious food!
We were seated quickly. Our server was very friendly and very helpful. Food was delicious!
Food was great & we love this restaurant but the price has drastically increased! May be a once a month or two occasion now.
Great night out at the Ron!
A family favorite!
To whom it may concern,
I received horrible treatment and customer service on 7/30/2020. The manager “John” was very rude and could clearly tell he had no prior experience running a Resturant. Been treating my employees and family to Ron of Japan for many years and will now be reconsidering. If you’d like to reach out id be happy to elaborate on the situation. On a positive note, the Long time bartender “ Francisco” immediately saw how Manager “John” was acting and tried to mediate the situation and make our dinner experience better. I was informed the previous manager “Sarah” no longer works with the Resturant and you can clearly see the change. Bad customer service, rude employees, no ambience and huge changes from what your long time customers expect of your establishment.
Thank you,
Vincenzo M
Gtreat food, great service, excellent chef.
Chef Jesus was awesome! Our food was very well prepared. We are regulars at Ron of Japan and we love the lobster and egg sauce! Thank you for making my husband a great birthday dinner!

Amazing place with the best food EVER. I highly recommend if you even step foot in Illinois. There egg sauce is THE BEST.
Amazing! Thank you so much! 😃
Wonderful celebratory birthday meal! They did a great job with social distancing. We felt very comfortable there. Only one party per table and the tables are spread out. Food was wonderful as usual. We had the shogun dinner, the lobster tail was great and the filet was so tender. We have been going there for over 30 years and will keep going back.
We had a good meal with a great group of people.
We love Ron of Japan, my kids love the egg sauce. The server did chef were awesome as well was the food. My only complaint is that the restaurant is in need of an update. Also the ventilation needs to be better. We will be back for more birthday’s and family gatherings.
Celebrating a birthday with some good food.
The food, as always, was good. The rice seemed odd, different not in a good way. Everyone in my party noticed it. Then we heard people at another table saying they didn't like the rice. The service was a little slower than usual.
Sad to say, this is not what it used to be.
When we arrived at the host stand, we barely got eye contact, let alone a welcome. The hosts looked down at the book and said "name?" We were there to celebrate a birthday, which we indicated on the reservation, and guests were holding gift bags - I was floored that not one employee acknowledged that, or said happy birthday to the guest of honor, the entire visit. The one exception was when I excused myself to talk with our server to let her know that one of the desserts we just ordered was for a birthday and if they had a candle. They added a sparkler to the ice cream and sang HB, which was nice.
The food was decent, but not outstanding. Most of our table ordered chicken or beef with fried rice and were happy with it, but no one commented that it was better than any other Asian restaurant. It was difficult to see the table, as the lights had been dimmed. Toward the end of the meal, the lights were turned up, and we could see the food and table much better.
The chef was clearly well-trained, but was not at all engaging with the table. In past visits, we had chefs that were PERFORMERS who cooked our meal. That was not the case this time.
The overall vibe was "get 'em in, get 'em out", rather than a personable and upscale dining out. Given that the bill was over $400, it would have been nice to have felt that it was money well spent.
I hope that these comments are taken to heart, as none of this is meant as a criticism. Rather, I wanted to let you know what it was like to be your customer and have the opportunity to address any missteps. Thanks for listening.
Way too expensive. A family of four should not require hundreds of dollars to eat out. We will not return and we will dissuade others from patronizing due to our of touch prices. The Hibachi chef was quite disappointing. No customer engagement, no acting, no theatrics. All this is a minimum for $253
Fun presentation. I always feel rushed though. We go here for bdays because my kids like it a lot. Definitely pricey.
Great place to celebrate a birthday!!
First: our server, Sumer, was fantastic. She kept everyone at our table supplied and refilled... I'm not sure we've had better service here (we've been coming for many years!).
The chef preparing the food was wonderful. The food was cooked to perfection and he was very accommodating our children's requests.
We were celebrating a birthday and it was a total success.
Thanks to all!
This has to be one of the worst hibachi restaurants I have ever been to. I do not recommend this place!!
The chef, Daniel I think, was not engaged with the table and outright rude. The server, Alexander, was soft-spoken, polite and on top of things. I raised the issue of the chef’s behavior to him, and then the manager came, apologized, offered to make things right and comped us a portion of the meal.
We have been customers for 35 years and are always very happy with our experience when we visit Ron of Japan.
We’ve been frequent patrons for years. We deal with the need to shower after a meal because the smell sticks to you so badly, because the food is delish and the kids love the experience. However, the smell of sewage when you first walk in the door, and in the lobby, is a huge turnoff. I noticed it the past couple times we’ve been there and figured they must be doing something about it but unfortunately it’s still there and getting worse. I really hope the owners/management can work on this issue as I’m sure I’m not the only person that can smell it.
It is the goto place for family celebrations. We have been going for years and will continue to celebrate with the ROJ family.
