Italian
After a spectacular three-year run for Sud Italia, Shanon Scott’s ode to the foodways of Southern Italy, the Houston restaurateur has turned his gaze northward to the capital: Rome or Roma (ROH-mah) in Italian. “I wanted to create a casual dining experience for Houstonians,” says Shanon, “and the natural inspiration for that was Rome’s wonderful trattorias.”

“Here at Roma, we’ve created a menu centered around the Roman classics like the pasta trinity — carbonara, amatricana, and cacio e pepe — and deep-dish pizza, which most people think comes from Sicily but actually comes from the Eternal City.” But the departure from southern Italian cooking has also allowed Shanon to include other Italian greats like osso buco and braised lamb shank.

His wine list has also evolved: It now features the three Italian big reds: Barolo, Barbaresco, and Brunello, as well as favorites from Tuscany like Chianti and Super Tuscan blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The atmosphere is charming and the manager is very attentive, but honestly, the food just wasn't that good. I ordered the shrimp, which was rubbery and overcooked. My son ordered different shrimp dish and had the same experience. My husband ordered the ravioli, which came in a sauce that was very heavy but not tasty. The amount of food is large, even the salads are huge. The staff is pleasant but the dishes are too pricey for the quality.

The food and service was wonderful! Unfortunately, however, the noise level is deafening. Only 2 of us at table (next to window not in middle of room) and we could barely even hear each other. Apparently same throughout restaurant because people at tables were almost screaming at each other to be heard.

We had a very nice dinner at Roma tonight. We arrived very early and were among the first people there for dinner. It was quiet, pleasant and comfortable. The food was great as always. (Try the octopus, I dare you!) The wine was great as well. This is one of our favorite go-to places for a casual and elegant meal in town. Highly recommended.

Second time eating here. Great outside patio area as you walk in. Wife and I both went the seafood route, salmon dish for her and scallops & shrimp for me. Biggest scallops I have ever been served at a restaurant and perfectly seared. Service was awesome and they were busy. Desserts also were good!

They were unexpectedly short on serving staff but worked very hard to make up for the loss.
As we were six, sitting in the patio in perfect weather it wasn’t an issue.
Food, wine and Limoncello all as great as usual

This is a wonderful restaurant with lovely east-facing porch for mild weather dining. They also have two small dining areas in the back of the restaurant for those who prefer a quieter space. We tried the branzino on 6/07/19 and it was fabulous. Prepared table-side and simply dressed with olive oil & kosher salt, it's one of the best fish dishes we've ever had.

Cacio e Pepe could have been better with bucatini rather than the ribbon cacao pasta that they used. I overheard the manager say they were trying to make the menu more affordable and family friendly, which it was. All in all if you are looking for quality Italian and/or pasta, this place does it right.

We had a very enjoyable meal on a Monday evening. Appetizer was shrimp and calamari. Mains were scallops with shrimp and fregola pasta. The other plate was fried octopus, polenta, green beans and cannoli beans. Desserts were tiramisu and lemon tarts.

Everything was cooked perfectly and presented in a timely manner. While it wasn’t a busy night, the atmosphere and wait staff were great and I think the same attention to detail would still exist had it been busier.

We will return.

A lovely experience! I had the octopus dish with polenta and a side of fresh veggies-sooo yummy. The octopus was buttery and divine. Tiny but good wine list. Bread is great too of course! Our server did forget to put in my appetizer and had a bit of trouble separating my friend’s check from mine (he gave her my side of veggies), but no big deal-I was glad to have had room for the amazing entree so I didn’t need the appetizer after all, and I was dining with a good friend who didn’t mind picking up the extra $8 from my side. The inside is a little too bright, not super romantic as I thought it would be, but the outside more than made up for it-that patio is sooo nice. I really enjoyed my meal and will definitely be back-I need to try some of the other dishes!!!

This was my second visit to Roma. Our first visit was awesome and we had an amazing waiter. This second visit was awful. Our waitress was not very knowledgeable and not very attentive. I almost asked for another person to wait on us. She did not know about their special that evening. I overheard another waiter their table about it and she finally checked and told us about it.

There was only two items on the menu I was even interested in ordering. I did not expect them to make accommodations without an up charge and told our server we would be willing to pay additional to have all shrimp instead of mix with clams and mussels on one menu item. She didn’t even offer to check to see if it would be possible. I believe a qualified server will make every attempt to accommodate when possible, but she made no effort. So we decided to order appetizers. The Calamari & Shrimp (only 2) was over cooked, tough and unseasoned. It was terrible. The menu is extremely limited. We were very disappointed.

Service was friendly, quick and professional - from the hostess to all the table staff. Atmosphere was very pleasant - sitting on the patio under the fairy lights with a nice glass of wine (although the interior seemed a little cold and stark). The only slight downside was the food. Whilst the grilled artichokes and spring greens were very nice, the cacio e pepe was disappointing. Cacio e pepe, whilst simple, is notoriously difficult to make and this fell well short. I'm not sure what pasta was used, but it seemed like a kind of wholewheat fettuccine - not typical and not what we expected - traditional linguine or spaghetti is usually used. The cheese was lumpy in places and lacked flavor. Finally, neither parmesan nor black pepper was offered and we had to ask for this. At $19 per serving, this seemed over-priced. A shame as the overall ambience of the restaurant is nice.

Very well prepared and presented good for less than I expected to pay. The waitstaff seemed to be short-handed though; our server disappeared a few times. But my only real criticism is the NOISE level. Perhaps because there is no a soft/absorbent surface in the entire restaurant, you just about need chalkboards to communicate with your dinner companions.

Bucatini was so overly salty it was almost inedible. No difference between "ziti" and "bucatini" which was confusing, and waiter mixed up our orders when serving the food. The tuna ziti and the buctini were both disappointing. The server put in my mom's order wrong and so had to wait for her dish to come out. My uncle liked his lasagna. But overall a disappointing experience

Shannon Scott's revamp of Sud Italia stays true with excellent cuisine and professional service. A few aesthetic tweaks refreshed the little cottage space. The patio is still the best place to dine, as inside is noisy. The whole branzino was out of this world, with a delicious veggie side. The osso bucco is among the best in town, but risotto would be nice instead of polenta. Nice wines by the glass. *Still a favorite!!

Having read some favorable reviews we decided to try Roma. The good news is that the food for the most part was good. Our party had 4 different pasta dishes and we were all quite pleased with the quality and flavor. The calamari/shrimp started was only OK as it came lukewarm and the calamari was a bit tough to chew. The big downside to us was the ambiance. The inside is very small and dimly lit and it just didn’t inspire the kind of vibe we like in a restaurant. The outside patio is quite large but is in need of some TLC. We might stop again since the pasta was quite satisfying but we’ll
Probably try lunch on a sunny day next time.
