“Here at Roma, we’ve created a menu centered around the Roman classics like the pasta trinity — carbonara, amatricana, and cacio e pepe — and deep-dish pizza, which most people think comes from Sicily but actually comes from the Eternal City.” But the departure from southern Italian cooking has also allowed Shanon to include other Italian greats like osso buco and braised lamb shank.
His wine list has also evolved: It now features the three Italian big reds: Barolo, Barbaresco, and Brunello, as well as favorites from Tuscany like Chianti and Super Tuscan blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The food is impeccable Roman faire. Portions are big. The Zuppa de pesce was filled with perfectly cooked shrimp and shellfish in a hearty tomato broth. Service is attentive and friendly, really good. Look forward to going back
I took my friend here for her birthday dinner last night, our experience was pretty disappointing. Lovely setting but the service was quite poor. We arrived for our 8P reservation on a Monday night and only three other tables were seated when we walked in. I initially thought that this would translate to timely, attentive service and a nice, intimate experience but I was wrong. Our server was MIA for most of our meal. The bread came to the table cold, which we found unusual but not a big deal. I refilled my own water glass the ENTIRE evening. After taking our dinner order, our server did not check in with us once until we requested the check. We both ordered the fettuccini bolognese which was fine, nothing spectacular. Lastly, our server never wished my guest a happy birthday, nor do they offer anything special treatment for a birthday guest (i.e. dessert, drink..) Just something to keep in mind. The owner (manager?) did come by the table and was very warm when we came in, however he had a large party that he was primarily entertaining, they were getting much better service than we received. I have worked as FOH for fine dining restaurants in Houston so I am a stickler for customer service but I can honestly can say I have had better experiences at chains like Maggianos or Mia Bella, and I don't expect much there. The food runner/valet actually provided the best service of the evening in my opinion.
Enzinne, please see my response on your Yelp review. Shanon
A very quaint restaurant with beautiful decor which seemed very promising from walking in and sitting down. However, the food and service left something to be desired. Many better Italian restaurants in town.
Can you please let me know what happened? Shanon
Nice quiet. Waiter was attentive
THANK YOU! Shanon
The octopus appetizer and shrimp and saffron gnocchi are both really delicious. Extensive wine list featuring many unique Italian options. Impeccable service from the entire staff.
Dennis, thank you for joining us again. I am so glad that you enjoyed everything! Shanon
Very odd experience dining at Roma. Had previously visited here when it was Sud Italia. That experience was a lot different than this one. Not sure how Roma is surviving. We were the only guests for a lunchtime date. Brought two employees to celebrate their efforts on a major project. No host/hostess, and we wandered around the empty restaurant until the owner? chef? popped out of the back of the restaurant. The food was good, fresh, and well prepared, but it was a weird vibe. One other party came in and also stood for awhile until we told them that they could take a seat anywhere and grab a menu. How weird is that? We didn't leave until after 1, and the whole time we were there, it was just us and the other party of three. Meal prep seems to be on the fly and when we ordered desserts, one of the desserts, a chocolate truffle plate (that the restaurant ought to have on hand) was definitely skimped on, and only two of the diners could be accommodated. It stated that the dessert would have three chocolate truffles, but in actuality, it's three half chocolate truffles. Very good, but maybe more accurate wording on menu? The tab with tip at nearly $90 (no alcohol), was definitely not worth it.
Suze, we do not have a host at lunch. I am sorry that you got a "weird vibe". Our dinners are very busy and lunch is study. You must have came on a slow day. Nothing here is pre made and we only have a small freezer for gelato and sorbet. The dessert menu does not say three truffles and we only charge $5 for it. As far as the tab you had 3 courses which would mean roughly $30 for each guest including tax and gratuity... Please stop back in and let us wow you this time. Shanon
Love the food and service! Massimo and Angelo are two stars!
Yes they are! Thank you for joining us and for sharing with the Opentable community. Shanon
Good food, good service but loud, very loud. Done trying to make a loud scene.
Charles, next time let us know and can place your table in a quieter area. Shanon
Carbonara was amazing; two small children split the bolongese. Well paced and attentive service.
Thank you! Shanon
Love the re-do of this location. The restaurant is in a small house in Rice Village. We were there early, but it was full when we left. Despite this, it was not loud, but it depends on the diners at the time. Another time friends and I went and the restaurant was half full, but a table of extremely loud people came in and yelled for the entire meal. So, I said noise level was moderate but it depends on who is there. That being said, our meal and experience was a delight and very good. The service was first-rate and the food was excellent. I had the seafood soup. it was described as spicy but it had zero spice-which was fine. Seriously it was the best seafood soup I have ever had. I'd get it again in a heartbeat. My husband had the salmon and it was fantastic. We had the gelato with expresso for dessert and again, amazing! We definitely will be back!

After reading many reviews and some press articles, I had pretty high expectations. It sounded like this was one of the top Italian restaurants in Houston. It was just ok, the service and atmosphere were great, we dined out on the patio. My wife had the salmon which she though was just blah. I had the braised veal shank that was great, and the green beans with it were fantastic. My daughter had a pasta carbonara that was rather dry and dull, and a caesar salad that was just ok. We skipped desert. So except for the veal shank it was all pretty ordinary.
I am sorry that you left unimpressed. Please join us again and ask for me personally. Shanon
Always a pleasure. Staff looks like they really enjoy being with you.
Mick, thank you for the kind words. Shanon
I absolutely loved Roma! The bolognese and carbonara were delicious.

Birthday dinner! Shanon, the owner took great care of us. We had a private dining room for 12. The service was amazing. The food fantastic!!
Thank you for joining us and the pleasure was all mine! Shanon
Limited lunch menu. Slow service. An average dining experience.
Rose, I am sorry that you were not blown away. Please join us again and ask for me personally. Shanon
This is our go to Italian restaurant!!

Great food! Meatballs...amazing! Ravioli is memorable! Fabulous!
Susanne, thank you for sharing! Shanon
Good food and service but they HAVE to do some noise abatement. Wood floors and low sheetrock/plaster ceiling results in a very noisy room. I wold at lease look into acoustical ceiling tiles. They aren't the prettiest but this place is LOUD when fairly full. Draping on the walls may help. Waitress was very good in helping us with wine and food selections.
Matt, please let us know next time and we can place your table in a quieter area. Shanon
Very disappointing. This restaurant was a complete let down. The service was poor at best. The bread was stale, the pasta was overcooked, the sauce tasted like it was canned.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY.
I wish you would have addressed it while you were here. We could have corrected it. Nothing here is canned or frozen. Shanon
Quite a disastrous meal at this shell of an Italian restaurant . We got bitter tasting pasta swimming in cheese . Yuck ! The waiter said they have never got complaints before . Come on Houston , are you kidding me?
First time at Roma and we were not disappointed. The service was great, our waiter made excellent recommendations, we all enjoyed our meals and did not feel rushed.
Thank you for sharing your experience here! It always makes us happy when our guest enjoy everything. Shanon
Our first visit and we can't wait to get back to this great restaurant. The owner Shanon makes a great presentation of atmosphere, food and wine. We sat on the patio with our group. Very cozy area for conversation. Deserves 10 stars!
ROMA is also very generous in the community.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! It was great having you in. We hope to see you back very soon! Shanon
Not too happy with the food here. The quantities were adequate. Although the dessert said caramelized apple tart there was no caramelization at all. The pasta was overcooked. I was hugely disappointed. I'm sure they have a good wine selection though!
I wish we would have known while you were here. We could have corrected it. Shanon
The service, food and wine were all amazing.
This place has been one of the best Italian restaurants I’ve ever been to. I tried the spaghetti carbonara and my fiancé had the fettuccine bolognese, both plates were to die for. Such rich flavor. If you’re looking for a cute date night this is definitely the spot. It’s romantic and the place just sets such a chill vibe. 10/10 recommend!

The food was good but what was outstanding was the expresso! Even better than coffee in Italy
Thank you! Shanon
Roma is a pleasant place with good food, service and wine list.
Food was good and authentic but service was very slow, mentioned to manager but he said it was busy. However others arriving after were served before our table
Brian, I am sorry that service was slow. Please join us again and ask for me personally. Shanon
Excellent service and food. Shannon is very hospitable as usual. Tony is the best waiter. Recommend to everyone.
Thank you for the kind words. Shanon
First time to visit Roma and will definitely be back. The food was excellent and our server Tony was fantastic.
Brian, thank you for sharing your experience here. Tony and I look forward to seeing you back very soon. Shanon
Upon arrival they wanted to put us in the back room because they said they had no place. Then I told them about me having a booking. Then news changed. I wondered after an hour that only one more table was taken why they would say they had no room when we got in. Food was good and service was too but they were sure rude when we arrived.
Jeremy, I apologize for the misunderstanding. If we would have known that you had a reservation at first we would have placed you in the main dining room. I am glad that you enjoyed the food and service. Please join us again. Shanon
Boyfriend took me out here, had a drink at the bar before dinner. Everyone was super nice and service was great. Food was delicious and wine selection was awesome. Ambiance is fun and lively but not too loud or crowded, 100% reccommend for any occasion!
Thank you for sharing your experience here! Shanon
pasta with Bolognese and pasta carbonara were mediocre. The smoked Gouda gnocchi were nice. Service was sporadic. It is only Sud Italia with a new name. Don’t bother going for the food, but patio is nice. There are a couple of small rooms as well as dining room and the small rooms are quieter.
Edward, thank you for joining us. Shanon
Find this gem of a restaurant and go there! Wonderful ambiance and fantastic food created by a chef who learned some techniques as a young man watching his Italian grandmother. Couldn’t get any more authentic.
Thank you for sharing your experience here. It was a pleasure meeting you both. Shanon
Not. Good. In the hour that we spent at Roma, we were placed in a back room devoid of any air conditioning, it took almost 30 minutes to get a drink and some table bread, and then after an hour, the mozzarella and salad appetizers we ordered still were nowhere to be seen. We walked out and proceeded to enjoy our date night at La Griglia a few miles down the road - best pivot ever.
I am so sorry about your experience here. We had a kitchen issue last Friday. I would like to invite you both back in on me. Please call or text me if you would like to join us again. My cell is (713) 459-4911. Shanon
Great food and portions for HRW
Thank you for sharing your HRW experience. Shanon
Disappointing visit for Restaurant Week. Their options didn't highlight their best entrees, and everyone at the table had to select from the Restaurant Week menu if one person wanted to. It was extremely loud.
The service was wonderful and most of the food delicious with the exception of the gnocchi which was disappointing! The bottle of wine that was recommended to us was substandard for the price and we probably should have chosen something else off the menu. The fish was delicate and yummy and the squid salad unique.
Peggie, thank you for joining us and we hope to see you again very soon. Shanon
Delicious and fresh Italian fare! Smoked gnocchi with shrimp and saffron melted in the mouth; and the salmon on citrus braised cabbage was tangy and flavorful. Plus the service was fabulous - attentive, professional and friendly. Great neighborhood feel.

Just happened upon this hidden jewel. The best bolognese I've ever had. First visit but definitely not our last.
Nancy, it was a pleasure having you in and thank you for the kind words. Shanon
