Roka Akor - Oak Brook
Roka Akor’s principle Robata Japanese cuisine is prepared on a twelve-foot robata grill that uses mesquite charcoal and almond wood with flames that can raise temperatures up to 1,900 degrees. The restaurant’s name is derived from two words: RO and KA. The meaning of the first word is hearth, a gathering place where people socialize and take in the ambience; the latter stands for a burning fire and projecting energy. In alignment with the restaurant’s name, Roka Akor’s design features a centrally located robata grill that provides the heart of the visual experience, surrounded by rich wood décor and sleek lighting. Guests are encouraged to speak with the chefs about the food to create an interactive and engaging dining experience.

When we actually got our food it was good, but the service was horrible - 1.5 hours to get main course.

Roka is our favorite restaurant. The food is cooked to perfection. Always rare treats are to be found. Our waiter is always attentive and enthusiatically fun.

The food here is fantastic. The best dining experience that we have ever had. The freshness of the fish was outstanding. Our hostess, Brie, was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. She guided us along and gave us information on the subtle flavors of each course. We highly recommend Roka Akor.

The food was simply amazing! However, our server was awful, very inattentive. When I asked for Sake, he brought the most expensive bottle. I thought $40 for five ounces of Sake was ridiculous. Our server never came to check on us after our meal was delivered. It felt like we were a terrible inconvenience for him. We had to ask another person for the check. Server just never bothered with us and since it was my birthday and we were celebrating, it took the shine off my special day.

Started with the Beef Tataki (ended up ordering a second because it was so delicious) and Yellowtail Sashimi. Then had Tuna Sashimi and Snake River Farms American Wagyu Sirloin with Bone Marrow, Truffle Aioli. Finished with a dessert sampler.
We will definitely be back to sample more of Roka's cuisine!
The seating was prompt, the food was good, the ambience was a bit noisy. The menu was not exhaustive and the omakase menu option was not very clear. The attentive service deteriorated a bit as the place grew more crowded.
The mushroom pot dish was saltier than expected. Maybe offer a low salt option?

I've only been to Roka Akor once before years ago in the city, so I was happy to know that there was one in the western suburbs. We made reservations on Open Table, since its was a Friday night. Upon arrival we were greeted by a beautifully dressed hostess who helped us choose a table in the outdoor patio. Passing though the restaurant, multiple staff continued to greet us "Welcome in!" The overall ambiance beams with an upscale feel. Our server attended our table soon after we were seated. We decided to order a few drinks and a spread of small plates to share, for a lighter meal. We had the Japanese fried chicken, Hamachi roll, fried squid, Wagyu beef and kimchi dumplings, diver sea scallops, and a bowl of edamame. All were absolutely delicious. The spicy sauce paired with the fried squid and the chicken was very tasty. Hamachi roll was extremely fresh, melted in my mouth. The sea scallops were cooked to perfection and were presented very warm. My absolute favorite though were the Wagyu beef and kimchi dumplings. Lots of attention to detail with flavor pairings and presentation. The manager even visited our table to see if we were happy. Overall a beautiful experience and will definitely be back again. I highly recommend!

The food was terrible. cold, salty and sub par to say the least. Someone needs to go to the kitchen and steal the salt shaker. My Rib eye steak was cold and salty and definitely not worth the 40 dollars. I should’ve got paid to go there instead of me paying them.

Our meal was outstanding - went to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday and wanted to do something special for him (other than going to a steakhouse). We did the tasting menu and it was absolutely perfect - didn’t have to decide on the food, everything was delicious, courses were perfectly prepared & timed out, and we got to try a solid portion of the menu. Our server was knowledgeable, funny, attentive (I wish I remembered his name - I would request him again!) If you are looking for upscale, authentic Japanese in the suburbs, definitely try this spot. Highly recommend!
Love Roka!!! Every time I go the food and service are consistently on point. I special ordered a grilled veggie roll and it was amazing. We loved the beet salad, edamame and beef appetizers. Cocktails are amazing. Always one of my favorites!!

My wife and I love coming to Roka Akor. The food is always excellent and their service is attentive and just right. We sat in the bar area this visit because the main restaurant was full. We enjoyed the music and atmosphere, good for a casual date.
Favorite food picks: scallop appetizer, American Wagyu with the bone marrow, mushroom risotto with the shaved truffle, king crab entrée, and sashimi.
If you're hungry and willing to try a bit of everything, go for the omakase!
