Roka Akor - Oak Brook
Roka Akor’s principle Robata Japanese cuisine is prepared on a twelve-foot robata grill that uses mesquite charcoal and almond wood with flames that can raise temperatures up to 1,900 degrees. The restaurant’s name is derived from two words: RO and KA. The meaning of the first word is hearth, a gathering place where people socialize and take in the ambience; the latter stands for a burning fire and projecting energy. In alignment with the restaurant’s name, Roka Akor’s design features a centrally located robata grill that provides the heart of the visual experience, surrounded by rich wood décor and sleek lighting. Guests are encouraged to speak with the chefs about the food to create an interactive and engaging dining experience.

Good experience, but to be honest, kind of a one and done kinda thing. It's expensive and when compared to other sushi places on the area, I'd choose RA or Kona instead. Ambiance and setup of the restaurant is a little odd and small. Sushi is good but not comparable in value to other local places.
Just plane fun, excellent menu and knowledgeable waitstaff.
Best dining experience I've had in a while. My wife and I both opted for the decadent Omakase. We are sushi nuts, and I expected the sushi to be the highlight of the meal. When we got the sushi course, there were several things we were unfamiliar with, but we ate them anyway! LOL The salmon and chutoro were the only things we recognized, and they were off the charts good. The rest of the sashimi had skin on it, which was something i was unfamiliar with. The textures of the fish and the flavors were very unique, but the skin was a little tough to chew. That said, I think it was superb, and if there was a problem it was that my palette was not refined enough to know what I was getting.
The cooked portion of the meal was an introduction to perfection. The sea bass I was served was by far the best seas bass I ever ate in my life. After oohing and ahhing and raving about it, the guy sitting next to me at the bar ordered it as well. After eating it, he concurred that it was the best Sea Bass he ever ate, too. The tempura lobster was very good but not great, primarily because we felt the ratio or batter to lobster was too high, if that makes any sense. Would have preferred more lobster and less batter.
Next came the beef. Perfectly cooked and it melted in my mouth. In the team picture for the best i ever ate.
Finally, the dessert was humongous and off the charts good. By the time it came, we had already ate so much that we tasted a few things that were wonderful, but we couldn't come close to finishing.
All in all, the meal and the service were fabulous.
Food is as good as always and service from our server, Lee, is always excellent.
Omakasa outstanding as always. service was a little spotty, that was unusual.
This review is based from the vantage point of being gluten free. I called in advance to ask if they had a good variety of dishes that would work well as-is for my allergy restrictions, meaning they would still have their sauces / other components intact, and I was told yes. This is not the case. There was very little on the menu that didn’t need to be modified and therefore that also lost most of its inherent flavor profile. Except for the overly salty gluten free tamari, the wasabi, a bland unimpressive aioli, and an Italian-tasting lemon olive oil, there was limited flavor, and certainly not the flavor described in the menu.
Just top start, I've been to the Downtown location several times ... it's definitely way nicer, better ambiance and the quality of the sushi is 100 times better than oakbrook. That being said the service was amazing and the cooked food was outstanding. If you're doing the tasting menu, go downtown. If you want a more casual night with great (cooked) food and service, oakbrook is the place.
This was an awesome place to go to for my birthday! The food was fantastic and waiter was very helpful with suggestions! I'll definitely go back!
Everything was great! Our server was very helpful and attentive.
We ended up sitting at the bar and the bartender took great care of us. He made very good suggestions for dinner and we all had a wonderful time
Very good, service great
Atmosphere not to loud and waiter very informative.
Please take there suggestions as I had no idea what to choose
Will eventually try everything
Excellent Japanese food. The Kobe/Wagyu is pricey but one of the best things I have tasted in my life.
It was the best
We had very high expectations and ordered the chef’s choice menu. The servers complimented us on our choice a little too much and said several times, “doesn’t this look delicious?”
About half the courses were exceptional and half were a solid “good.” Also a more casual atmosphere than we expected. Not quite fine dining . So, I guess it’s a good and interesting choice.
The food is exquisite! The service exceptional! Lee, our bartender/server, couldn't have been better - his knowledge was outstanding, and his attention to us was great! Overall an amazing experience!
We don’t get the table we reserved. Waiters were confused about which food goes to which table. Not much on the menu to choose from
I wish that the staff would smile. Everyone walked around looking miserable expect the food runner/busser. The food was incredible!!!!! Our server had a great sense of humor but no smiles.
Mr Lee is the best. Magical experience
We always have a great experience here. We are gluten free and the servers always coordinate with the chef and accommodate us. Highly recommend.
Service was a little off but it was fixed by the waiter fast they made my guest very happy with a free appetizer for her birthday . One thing that Almost ruined the day as me and my friends were leaving I opened the door to exit the restaurant the cover from the door opener hit my girlfriend in the shoulder and almost hit me in my face I’ve gave the piece that fell off the door to the front desk hopefully it’s fixed by now.
Always happy with service and food. One of my favorite go to places. Absolutely love the spicy edamame.
Waiter was odd. Had dined at a Roka Akor in AZ and had an amazing experience. This was just OK.
Very nice! Excellent and different food. Excellent service
Great jasmine tea
The chef’s tasting menu is absolutely amazing!! Wonderful food! Wonderful experience!
The lunch “sets” are a nice compliment and reasonably priced. Ordering rolls on the menu can add up very quickly. Service was prompt and knowledgeable.
We had an excellent dining experience at Roka Akor for our birthday celebration. Our server, Rich was very helpful with recommending the tastiest appetizers and entree dishes. We chose 2 hot dish appetizers, the scallops and mushrooms, that were very tasty. We chose salmon, marinated cod and a nigiri dish for our entrees. We also received s complimentary dessert with our other desserts. We had a very nice dining experience. We will return soon.
Went on a Sunday night at 6pm. Staff accommodated my seating request which was nice, but it turned out to be a bit too crowded (you were quite close to your fellow diners) and loud for my wife, so we moved to the small enclosed room by the windows facing outside. It was quire warm because the A/C wasn't working well. Waitstaff was hit and miss, as our waiter was friendly but others brought the food and were a bit on the "another day of drudgery" side. Food was very good - loved the dumplings and American Wagyu filet, and also the "purple dessert." Cost was quite high (for two you'll probably go over $200.00 if you have any sake or drinks), but I was prepared for that. Mostly however, I was disappointed at the closeness of the tables, somewhat annoying music, and hit and miss service for this type of price point. I may or may not be back. If you were into sushi and money no object, you may enjoy this place especially at the sushi bar - but not the right special occasion place for my wife and I.
Without question an absolutely wonderful restaurant. Great service, excellent food, etc... we went to otiginal Scottsdale location years ago and we were floored management has really made something that was already awesome years ago even better.
Our server was wonderful! We were celebrating a birthday and he surprised us with one of the best desserts they have! He was very nice and very genuine with his service.
Went with girlfriends and shared appetizers, small plates and dinner. Everything is delicious. Our waiter, Carmen was excellent and very patient with everyone.
The food and service were both excellent. The chef did an amazing job preparing dishes that were served with wonderful presentation.
Service was good, food just ok and a bit over priced.
Clearly a Scottsdale establishment. Good even fine product quality, fine presentation and very good service with resort prices. Great outdoor space for eating. Huge prices on all alcohol. Not possible to keep things simple and reasonable when drinking. Unlike other restaurants in Oak Brook, lunch here ends at 3:30PM. So at 4PM unable to get Ramen which was the reason for our visit. But one of the managers apologized and provided an appetizer on the house. OpenTable was not clear on hours and availability of certain foods when displaying menus.
Also both Google maps and Apple maps place the restaurant in the mall shopping lot when in fact it occupies part of the space formerly used by A&F store in the Mall.
The food was delicious as always. Lee was a wonderful server!
Fantastic service with Carmen! Food was fabulous!
Need to modify my previous review. This was the first time we dined at Roka Akor on Saturday evening. It was so loud it was impossible to hear one another speak. I do love this restaurant, but will not being coming back at peak times again.
We are repeat customers and appreciate the attentive sevice. Cannot get enough
Pork belly and hot pot rice!
Great tasting food with exceptional service
Our second time here. Had the peppers and octopus for apps. They were good. Not great. We were excited for our steak as the first time there everything thing we ate was so flavorful. We split the 10oz NY strip with truffle aioli. Steak was not seasoned well and aioli was not very truffley. Though it was cooked perfectly medium rare. Mentioned that to the manager who did apologize and gave us a free desert. For price I would expect more.
