Roka Akor - Oak Brook
Roka Akor’s principle Robata Japanese cuisine is prepared on a twelve-foot robata grill that uses mesquite charcoal and almond wood with flames that can raise temperatures up to 1,900 degrees. The restaurant’s name is derived from two words: RO and KA. The meaning of the first word is hearth, a gathering place where people socialize and take in the ambience; the latter stands for a burning fire and projecting energy. In alignment with the restaurant’s name, Roka Akor’s design features a centrally located robata grill that provides the heart of the visual experience, surrounded by rich wood décor and sleek lighting. Guests are encouraged to speak with the chefs about the food to create an interactive and engaging dining experience.

Amazing food. Enjoyed the meal!
We dined at Roka Akor in Oak Brook on a week night for the first time. The restaurant was smaller than we expected. Small patio seating outside by the entrance overlooking the parking lot at the Oak Brook mall. Inside, the space was a little crowded with tables close to each other with some limited seating at the bar. The noise level was above average for an upscale Japanese steakhouse but wasn’t too loud that you couldn’t have a quiet conversation at your table. The service was great and our server was very helpful and knowledgeable. The food tasted really good and fresh. I was surprised, and pleased at the variety of dishes on the menu. There were plenty of steak, seafood and side dishes to choose from. It was a good experience and we had a good time at this restaurant.
Our server, Lee is very attentive and provided excellent service.
The sushi was dry and had no flavor. The breaded shrimp was bland. Same breading was used for calamari. Disappointed in the ambiance not too comfortable. Steak was amazing. Drinks were terrible. Had a muddled rasberry and Prosecco cocktail totally disappointed. Asked for a Mojito was told they don’t make mojito because they don’t have mint. Overall it was ok probably will not revisit
Lee is a top notch waiter. His service is outstanding and we are very happy to see him each time. In general, the staff works very hard to keep service smooth. The chefs make sure the food is consistently wonderful. Repeat favorites are: Spicy fried tofu, Edamame with sea salt, Crispy prawn and chirashi maki, Bone marrow (side), Japanese mushroom rice hot pot, Ube pot de creme
Wide variety of menu. Delicious food and spectacular customer service.
nice restaurant with good service but the food are just too general, not good enough to the cost,
Lee, our server was excellent. We chose to have the chef chose our courses. Every item was great & a fun experience.
We also would visit again. The food was good, some items tasted great, and the service was good with very friendly staff with smiles on their faces.
The tasting menu was excellent, heavily weighted on the seafood. Could use more meat. I explained I was allergic to nuts but was still served the beet salad with hazelnuts in it. Desserts were also excellent. Service was excellent. The ribeye selection was cooked medium well (no pink) which was too well done for my liking.
I read the reviews that weren’t flattering, but gave this place a chance, as we had a generous dinning reward to use. Server was friendly but came across a bit pretentious. He was very attentive to our needs but then spoke to use as if we were new to dinning out. It was uncomfortable.
Wine was severely over priced. Can’t get a bottle for under $50 or a glass for under $10. We ordered the dumplings for an app, which were good.
We shared sushi rolls and a rib eye with brussel sprouts. The steak and vegetable were wonderful. The sushi was average. Lacked flavor.
Overall, it was a descent night, as we are 2 parents of young kids desperate to get out. But won’t return again and wouldn’t recommend. We spent way too much for a meal in which weren’t impressed with.
Loved the modern wooden decor and ambiance. Very comfortable and fun vibe. Lovely, attentive servers. Fantastic sushi, and wonderful green tea custard dessert on the house for my husband's birthday. I have been for lunch before and wish their Ramen was on the dinner menu. Overall, yum!
The service is always warm and inviting. The Corn and Brussels Sprout appetizers are the absolute best. Patio seating was really enjoyable
Outstanding food and service. They welcomed us with a free appetizer since we had never been there before. One of our dishes took a long time in coming so the waiter took it off our bill. We were celebrating a birthday and they brought out a free birthday dessert to share. Wonderful Restaurant. and Staff!
Delicious food, fantastic service, favorite date night spot.
THe appetizers and sushi were very very good- and the server started out doing great- we had a later in the evening reservation- and things were going smoothly. we ordered drinks and apps and ate before deciding on dinner. when we started to look at dinner options- the bus boy came up and asked for the menus- we insisted we were going to order more- and wanted to keep them. we were allowed to have one.
the waiter came back- seeing if we needed drinks- and we decided to order. it was about 9:30-or so, and we understood. The food came out less then anticipated. The lamb was overcooked, the ribs had little sauce and were a bit undercooked- and the fish dish was rather smaller. it felt like the food was rushed- and that the staff was in a hurry to leave for the evening. Being in the industry I understand it- but for this level of food, the area we were located, and this level of the restaurant, I didn't expect it. we did give the kitchen a pass out of karma, but i would probably suggest going early- before 8:30- or if you come at 8:30- order everything at once or go for the tasting menu
Great appetizers and strip steak. Companions enjoyed the black cod. The mashed potatoes were more like a sauce or purée. The dessert was just okay combining chocolate, banana and green tea. Would go again.
For the second time in a row I've had Sam as a server. He really is the best. Covering everything from menu introduction to wine suggestions and knowing how to pace out our meals. We will absolutely return.
The tasting menu was wonderful and all of the staff was attentive and extremely knowledgeable. Despite the high price point, it still felt like great value because of the variety and volume of different plates we could try. We left properly full and already wanting to come back with friends.
As always everything was perfect. Never disappointed at Roka.
Food was more expensive than average yet underwhelming. The steaks were not great honestly, and the sushi was nothing to write home about either. Service was good, a bit bustling but they were busy so it’s understandable. Overall atmosphere was loud although it may have been because it was crowded. Decorations were nice. Overall, I don’t regret trying this place but I don’t think we will be returning.
Hard to say what was more fabulous-the food, the cocktails, or the service, Chris was a fantastic waiter-super friendly and knowledgeable. Roka Akor ROCKS!
Good for groups. Salmon avovado roll ok, as was the fried squid. Black Cod, Japanese fried chicken, Hamachi rolls, brussel sprouts were great. Service was very good and good ambiance, a little loud but not as loud as other restaurants in the area.
A bit pricey, but highly recommend! A bit of the big city vibe in the Subs! The super yummy NY strip w/ truffle mayo was outstanding! The robata scallops & robata pork belly were great too. The crispy spicy tuna, hamachi, crispy squid, beef gyoza dumplings & chocolate cake were also good. I would pass on the tempura shrimp though (small & super greasy).
Food was amazing as always! The level of service & attention not up to par as the Chicago location. Overall, great place.
We made a reservation at 8:15pm, checked in at 7:52, confirmed with the host to get us when the table is ready. Somehow, by 8:30 we still were not contacted. I went to the host and she seemed to have forgotten. The manager and waiter were apologetic and made kind gestures to make up for the mistake. Food is always excellent and service from inside the restaurant also, outstanding. As the for the hostess part, additional training maybe necessary.
this roka location is our favorite. its got its ups and downs. on this particular day, it took almost an hour for the food to be served and it was not very warm anymore. but the taste is always great.
Went when they opened and everything was delicious! My lychee martini was fabulous, sushi was excellent. However, last night, my lychee martini didn’t even taste like my first visit and all sushi tasted alike. Things have definitely changed. Unfortunate.
Great food, service and atmosphere! Celebrated my.birthday with dear friends, and we had a great time.
Very expensive but i did not feel that the food nor services measures up to the pricing
Service was fantastic. Paully was attentive and answered questions about the menu. Cocktails were wonderful. I can’t wait to go back.
The signature maki rolls were delicious. The chef’s choice sashimi was wonderful and beautiful. I will definitely come again.
Been there many times before but it keeps getting worse and worse I’ll never go back terrible Sushi and the soft shell crab supposedly in season was spoiled!! And way overpriced too!!
Overall the experience was great. Our server Sam was very attentive and was very good about suggestions. The only issue was being seated by a large loud group which is no fault of the restaurant but the last thing you want on a quiet relaxing evening away from your toddler is a loud group of overgrown toddlers.
Just an awesome experience all around. From the food to the drinks to the service it was outstanding.
Great staff, great food, great venue
Wonderful experience as always. Ordered the dessert platter for a birthday, did not disappoint.
The food is great and over the top, but I love the service. The waiter knows my name, remembers stuff about my order, and the chef's are very friendly. It's the difference between being a friend and just a customer.
Enjoyed a lovely ladies lunch with my Ma recently. She was beyond thrilled at the level of service, the food and most of all the wine suggestion made by our server. We had a wonderful time.
