Roka Akor’s menu changes seasonally, including a rotating selection of prime-cut steaks, seafood, and vegetables with Japanese-inspired marinades and sauces, along with sushi and sashimi. We are also know for being one of the only restaurants in the United States to serve authentic Japanese Wagyu and Kobe Beef.
The restaurant’s design features a centrally located robata grill that provides the heart of the visual experience, surrounded by contemporary décor and sleek lighting. Guests are encouraged to speak with the chefs about the food to create an interactive and engaging dining experience.

I have been a huge fan of Roka Akor over the years. Decided to try dinner out downtown for the first time with everything going on. We all ordered the Decadent tasting menu.
This is the first time service has been an issue at Roka. They started off too fast - bringing the first few dishes one after the other where there was no time to eat the first few courses. This isn't the end of the world, but the first 3 dishes piled up on the table. Then it slowed to a reasonable pace until sorbet. After that, we could not get service. The last two dishes and dessert look an hour longer than needed. They were breaking down more than serving. We asked about each course multiple times. For the tasting menu - the masks and acoustics make it almost impossible to hear what the server is describing (not their fault - just making note).
The food started off strong. Seafood apps and Nigari/Sashimi were wonderful. Scallops were solid. It trended downhill after that. The tofu/mushroom dish was inedible (to me). Seafood was ok - but not especially flavorful. Steak was over spiced which overpowered the quality meat I wanted to taste. Dessert was fine.
As for ambiance, River North is strange right now. Cars and motorcycles going around the block, blasting engines and radios, peeling out. Couples loudly fighting, selfie taking Kardashian wannabe's, tough guys, etc. The mix of older professional, young professional, tourist, city, and suburban folks have been replaced by all young city. This is obviously no Roka's fault - but it is something to note when making plans in the area in the next few weeks.
Roka has built up credibility with me over the years - so hopefully the service and food were just speed bumps in them opening back up.
Great waiter! Love eating out in the street.
i am very pleased with my experience and our server was very accomodating and helpful. its a pity i forgot his name, but he was great! Me and my friends are definitely coming back soon.
Good food, great ambiance and professional service. I left my credit card behind by mistake and they called me to let me know they had it with them and to come pick it up. Good experience overall.
Excellent food and great service outside. Always one of my favorite places in Chicago
Loved it! Both food and service was outstanding! Will definitely come back!
Amazing service and food
Our server was amazing. I love the food and ambiance here!
The food was better than even expected. Portion sizes were surprisingly large and everything was delicious! Seared salmon roll was the star. The rice bowl was good but not worth the price for the truffle, the regular would’ve been just as good - and I love truffle. Next time, we’d get the regular rice pot instead.
Really delicious food and drinks. Lovely evening with family!!
Only received 3/5 items we ordered after nearly 2 hour dinner. Staff was somewhat indifferent.
Update - manager reached out directly and resolved issue.
The food honestly sucked and the waitress charged me for the wrong meal but other than that it was a good experience
Very nice and friendly service was great people that works there was very nice great food
Food and Service was great. The ambience isn’t particularly intimate for a couples special night out. But the food made up for it....
Two words sum it up........DINING PERFECTION!!
Wonderful evening, zero complaints. Always a consistently delicious experience
Great place for a special night out. Open air tables !
Always great food and great service!! We will return!
Food & service were good but it was uncomfortably stuffy inside bc the air was not on and the doors were closed. It made me want to eat and leave ASAP instead of taking time to enjoy my meal and drinks.
Food was great, service is ok, in this covid times we need to be aware about everything is around us especially in sanitation. Waiter did not use mask properly and keep taking off, we never saw disinfecting tables and chairs while we were there.
Always great service and the food was excellent.
waitstaff excellent. Food prepared as we had asked. My wife has celiac disease and waiter quite knowledge
Last minute decision on this restaurant..... and we can not wait to return. The sushi roll was so fresh. Ribeye steak was great along with corn. Also had the cod and it melted in my mouth. We had the chocolate cake with salted Carmel ice cream. Can’t wait to return! Thank you! Our sever Fabiola was amazing too!!!
Guy is a great server, and we love the food. It was wonderful to be back!
Absolutely amazing! Loved every aspect!
Everything was perfect
Superb food, Maki was breathtaking incredible service cocktails outstanding.
I dined here on the first evening that indoor dining was phased back in for Chicago. One guest wanted steak and one wanted sushi - so this was the right place! I had originally requested a table outside, but the weather app was showing severe thunderstorm warning through 9 pm with rain starting 50 minutes from our reservation time. We asked to be moved inside. I've dined here a number of times before and have always had a fun and delicious meal. The food was fantastic, and Aaron took care of us with great attention and knowledge. All staff wore masks and gloves. I gave 3 stars for this meal because I did not feel that the restaurant had really thought through some important health considerations given how long Chicago has been on "lockdown" due to COVID-19: I was surprised not to have had my temperature taken when I arrived. I even called before arriving to find out if there was anything I should know given this was the first day dining "in" was permitted. I probably should have asked more questions. I had also forgotten that Roka Akor plays loud music. Unfortunately, at our square table of four, I could only hear the person on my left and the person on my right - and we all had to shout to be heard. A room full of diners shouting indoors over dinner with no masks on doesn't feel quite "safe" right now. Perhaps that is not a "requirement" to open up indoor dining, but I would have appreciated feeling that management was taking the safety of both guests and employees (more) seriously. Great meal, but left worried and determined to quarantine myself again for a while. Please turn down the music to make it easier to have a conversation!
Great ambiance, superb service. Delicious food, quality food. We were there for our 25th anniversary, we got a delicious surprise dessert on the house. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Great food and service
Food was very good. Service as well. Just overall a great experience.
Excellent service and food. Very accomodating to our engagement dinner
This was my first trip to Chicago and a must on our dining experience. The food was amazing and atmosphere was intoxicating. Ron the manager was extremely gracious and made the night unforgettable. Don’t miss this dining experience in the middle of downtown Chicago.
It was really good. We had the toro, the hamachi, and the sea bass and I could not find fault with the sea bass. It was really quite perfect. The toro and the hamachi were also lovely. I thought the dynamite scallop was only ok.
I like this restaurant! Very beautiful, good service & food 5 star
Very good food and service.
Not romantic but just excellent.
My favorite place in Chicago for Family, Friends and work colleagues
The kimchi wagyu beef dumplings were amazing; we ended up getting two orders. I am a big fan of miso glazed black cod, and although it was cooked beautifully I wasn’t a fan of the taste. With that being said the king crab was phenomenal. The real winner of the night was our waiter, Mark. He went above and beyond to make sure the birthday celebration was amazing. I’m looking forward to going back...and requesting Mark.
I made this reservation for my twin daughters that just turned 18 to celebrate their birthday. I wasn't able to make it, but they kept sending me pictures and telling me of their experience. The staff was amazing and professional. The waitress broke down the menu for them. They ordered the Wagyu Beef and thought it was perfectly cooked. Also some sushi that was delicious. They made it special by acknowledging their birthday and serving them some warm chocolate cake. I appreciate this restaurant for giving them the best customer service that they are known for and making their day great!
Probably the best customer service I’ve had in a restaurant. Above and beyond. Great staff, food was amazing and delicious.
