Roia is my favorite restaurant in New Haven for a couple of reasons. One, their food is always interesting. Some restaurants have the same perfected menu all-year around, which some people find it comforting, but Roia keeps it seasonal with interesting twists. Sometimes it's a miss, but sometimes it turns out to be the best version of the dish I have ever tasted. Two, the atmosphere is super romantic with lots of dark wood, warm lights, and great drinks. It is one of the few remaining locations in downtown New Haven that still has the old charm. Three, it's fairly low-key for the quality of food. No pretense, just great food. Noise level is high during the weekend (nature of the venue), and sometimes the servers forget which table they are going to, but this will always be my go-to restaurant.

we really enjoyed our meal - we sat in a booth near the bar, which was quiet and intimate. Food was great (the prix fixe 3 course menu). Thanks!

Went for rest. week, 4 of us and limited menu so limited review. The lamb ragu w/house made pasta was a definite winner and the others loved the sea bass with brussels. The bass was delish and cooked perfectly as were the brussles. The ragu was very flavorful and if looking for comfort food you'll find it in that dish. I love sunchokes but the app did not impress, a bit too mushy with the skin still on them, maybe peeled would have been better. The calamari was a hit with the others. Poached pear in my opinion should have been poached longer and the sauce tasted like reduced heavy dry red wine. Was disappointed in the pear but the panna cotta was without a doubt a 10!!! Would definitely go back and enjoy more options off the regular menu.

I was so disappointed in this restaurant. From the pictures posted on open table and their website, I expected an elegant venue. Where were the tablecloths shown in the photos? The restaurant is very noisy. And my French toast was burnt. Certainly not the type of restaurant that I expected.

Return visit even better than the first - our waitress also guest bartender was superb- knowledgeable and a sympathetic producer of healthy herbs- we love the vegetables from the local farms and that the chef loves them so creatively- purée of cauliflower and dragon tongue beans comforted my Arctic char special that evening !

Handsome setting in downtown New Haven. Courteous service. Delicious food - especially the mushroom appetizer and chocolate pots de creme. Really the only downside is the price point: with one appetizer, the least expensive entree, and one glass of wine, my bill was almost $75. Can't do that often!

Fantastic restaurant. First of all, it's very discreet from outside, but the inside decor and architecture are worth the visit. The setting is really outstanding. The service was great as well, with the chef coming over to chat with us. Food was excellent, with reasonable portions, and the wine selection good, although on the pricey side. Would definitely visit again and highly recommend it.

Everything about this place is amazing. From the executive chef/owner to our waitress to the food, it was incredible. Roía, like The river it is named after, it’s a blend of French and Italian cuisine. The executive chef’s personal story of how he came to New Haven and opened this business is absolutely incredible. This is a must if you are in new haven. It is European style dishes, so not too large, and pricey, but a good splurge and worth it!

The room, menu, and presentation are gorgeous and inviting. The food, however, is overpriced, with lackluster presentation and surprisingly small portions. It all tasted fine, but the promise of the menu descriptions raised expectations which were not met.

The food at Roia was exquisite, in taste, textures, appearance, conception. The papardelle with pistachios is a gem -- not for me enough of it though for an entree. The steak with frites was superb. The tomato salad was beautiful in appearance and every bite delicious. The ambience is lovely, high ceilings, Art Nouveau light fixtures.

Our server was friendly and listened intently. But the service was slow, long waits between our first course and our second, and a very long wait between our second and the offer of a dessert menu.

It looked as though she was the only server the early evening we were there, and it's true that when we saw her she was attentive, kind, encouraging, well informed.

Seated promptly, very amiable hostess. Server was very attentive but not at all smothering - just right. She made some very informed suggestions as well. Food was excellent. Home made fettuccine was light and al dente in a lovely lemon cream sauce made very interesting with fresh pistachios and a hint of red pepper. Companions had the seared shrimp special and the swordfish special (the fish expertly sliced so thin as to be almost transparent) - both raved about their meals.

Do not do brunch here. Very limited menu and the most overpriced ever. We are huge brunch people and have eaten at countless number of restaurants serving weekend brunch. Never been to a restaurant that serves 2 fried eggs with a tiny slice of toast with avocado for $16. This compilation costs about $1 or $2, the most, to make. $11 for a smoked salmon appetizer that I thought was designed to compete in miniature food creation competition. Eggs Benedict, Steak and Eggs all miniature for the price. Very limited menu selection.

First time to Roia and it won't be our last! REALLY loved the food and the service was exceptional. The octopus appetizer was amazing as was the squid pasta. The eggplant main dish was delicious and the desserts were out of this world! We asked the staff to choose wines to go with 2 of the courses and they were spot on and really tasty. We will be back!!
