Rockin Baja Lobster Old Town Ratings and Reviews
This place ROCKED!!! (pun intended). This was our first time to San Diego for a vacation and aren't familiar with the town so I looked on my TripAdvisor app for things to do and restaurants we might like and came across this place. The name alone had my attention immediately, I am a lover of all things lobster & after telling my husband about it, decided to make reservations for dinner. We ordered the Golden Sombrero Bucket & it was AWESOME!!! It was pricey, but with all that comes with it, it was worth every penny. Our waitress was great, the atmosphere was so cool, we loved it! I've decided this is my birthday/anniversary goto from now on, so I see many more trips to SD!
Our meal was excellent, with all dishes coming out hot at the same time (which can be an issue at RBL). Service was good to start, but once the meals came out it was largely absent. Wouldn't have noticed if we didn't need some napkins and a side plate, but we did. Prices on the buckets seem to continue to increase, but it is a unique and tasty item.
This is a fun place to take relatives who are visiting from out-of-town. The portions are not huge, but the fantastic and varied salsa and chips bar will make sure you don't leave hungry. This place is not cheap, but everything was tasty, and the atmosphere is colorful and a lot of fun. I really enjoyed my soft shell crab tacos, although all tacos made with flour tortillas. Corn tortillas would make everything tastier. The restaurant has a nice, large parking lot which makes it easier on busy days when it's difficult to find parking in Old Town.
Lobster and shrimp were good. Carne Asada was tough. They used to serve warm tortillas. None were offered on this visit. Only a dab of beans were brought initially. By the time I got more beans, everything was cold and I was full. Poor server. We were two and she paid twice as much attention to the table of four right next to us than she did us.
The menu pricing is very deceptive. Under the Category "Signature Baja Buckets" it is stated that the "Big Baja bucket " is 59.99 for two. Under that listing is several other "bucket" items with the pricing individually shown. However, all the other buckets are for one serving - which is not made clear on the menu. For example the Shrimp & Lobster Bucket is $38.99...but is for only one serving. Two servings in one bucket is $77.98.
We were celebrating my husband's birthday. The waiters were not attentive. We always had our glasses empty. One of the orders was incorrect. Everything took too slow. The food was delicious and the live music and atmosphere was Awesome. Great overall except for the waiters.
$2/$3 tacos on Tuesdays! Tried all the options (fish, ahi, carne asada, chicken) and loved them all. While waiting for the rest of our party we had chips and salsa from the unlimited nacho bar. Pineapple and mango salsa was my favorite but there were Also lots of others. Drinks were good, food was good, and service was good. We sat near the fountain inside and didn't realize that it was a partial inside-outside seating. We recommend that option since it feels a little more lively. Very cute entrance to the restaurant too.
We were looking for a Mexican restaurant with seafood and we found a great place. Rockin Baja exceeded our expectations. We got a table far enough from the band so we could talk. By the way, the band on this Saturday night was wonderful (they played our old favorites). The atmosphere was festive with great decor. The food-great lobster and shrimp-endless variety of tacos and burros. Being from Phoenix we know Mexican food. We will be back next time we get to San Diego.
The food was good but on the pricey side. Although there was quality ingredients I could easily get something with chicken or beef for much less. I understand their seafood can be pricey though and it might be more marketing to price their nonseafood items closer to their high end items. Overall I liked it and would go back and recommend it.
Our food was excellent...we had the original bucket. Our server was very attentive and checked on us numerous times. We were seated out on the patio, under an umbrella and right by the waterfall, so it was great! I would highly recommend this restaurant. We had lunch there before seeing a play at the Cygnet Theatre, just a few blocks away, as we always do and it works out well. And it was easy to make a reservation through Open Table.
Purchased 3 of the original Baja buckets; plenty of steamed and seasoned shrimp, grilled skirt steak, grilled chicken, grilled corn, lobster tails were the 4 inch tails - minimal amount. If you're going there for the lobster, you might reconsider. Food was prepared well, seasoned nicely; sides refried beans and lime rice, tortillas, and an awesome salsa bar and tortilla chips were plentiful.
Drink of the day- Long Island Ice Tea, was not prepared well, flat tasting and a lot of ice.
We sat on the patio near the waterfall, nice ambiance but a bit noisy. Service was accommodating and pleasant. Overall it was a good experienced and we would revisit and recommend to others.
