I was a bit disappointed this visit. It was a very hot day and it was hot in the restaurant. They menu for summer was too heavy, hot and spicy. I was not expecting the menu to be so Asian inspired. I like Asian food but was not expecting at Rock City Eatery
Nice surprise - food has a unique Asian touch to it
This is a cool, funky, gritty spot in the heart of Midtown. The limited menu offers some oddities, but the excellent burger comes to the rescue. Service is excellent.
My group had been looking forward to trying Rock City for weeks and made a 6-person reservation a month or more in advance. The cafeteria-style restaurant (a semi-dark, square dining space, high ceilings and little to no ambience) had 2 customers in it and yet the hostess would not allow us 6 to be seated away from all service areas in the back of the square restaurant. She insisted they were taken by 2-person reservations to come and yet 20 minutes later 2 tables of 6 received those seats. Clearly, hostess-training should be looked into, and there appeared to be no management present. The food was good (nothing you’d say I have to go back there for, but still good), the bar was crammed in a corner next to the kitchen door, so it gave no incentive to sit there. Sadly, I wouldn’t recommend. Just isn’t special. :(
My wife and I went for dinner and it was just ok. Also, be prepared to give yourself some extra time to park. With all the other restaurants down there there are far better with cool space. The service was good and we were seated at our reservation time. Neither of us are in any hurry to go back
Nice staff. Good for birthday.
This is not a good place to bring kids. My son has an allergy and the restaurant was not willing to make any accommodations for it. They also did not have a kids menu. When we asked our waiter if they could simply make plain pasta (they have pasta dishes) even this was not an option. We needed up leaving and eating across the street.
Our Rock City meal was terrific. Appetizers were suggested by our waitress and her suggestions were spot on. Terrific flavors. Our drinks were very good also. Our main course meal was chosen with some Suggs from our waitress and were again terrific with great flavors. Meals were large and half of us took some home.
Always great service, Eric is excellent! Food very good. One of our favorite places to dine.
Appetizers good. Burger needed further cooking after it arrived, but it was taken care of. Pie was yummy.
Made a reservation for 2 on a Saturday with no problem. This is a small plates restaurant, so be prepared to order multiple dishes and eat "family style". There are no "dinners" (e.g. a main course with side dishes).
It was raining so there was only 1 other party in the restaurant and it was quiet. I read reviews about the chairs being uncomfortable. They definitely aren't cushy and as a plus size person, I found their small, narrow size to be a major (and common) misstep in the design, but I was comfortable enough to stay seated.
We ordered cocktails (Maidenhead, Cash Out). They were ok but not our preferred taste (a little too bitter from the lime). Ordered my normal cocktail of choice (Amaretto Sour) and it was great.
We ordered the Brussel Sprouts, Poutine, Chicken Dumplings, and Mac & Cheese with Brisket and Wild Mushrooms. The sprouts were divine (if you like brussel sprouts, order these without hesitation no questions asked. YUM. EE.). We also really enjoyed the chicken dumplings. The garnish on them is heavenly. The poutine was disappointing. The fries weren't crisp like I expected and the cheese curds were a bit of a congealed blob. The gravy was completely lost. The mac & cheese was also good, but next time I would probably add cheddar for a more "cheesy" flavor. Our server Isabella was great and fun. Everything came out promptly and was hot. We'll definitely be back to try more small plates.
Good was creative and very good. Reasonable prices.
Awesome!! This place is great!!
The food was good. The drinks were ok. The service was really disappointing. The manager/hostess was rude. The waitress forgot to put in the order of the person whose bday we were there to celebrate. Overall, the lack of customer service and dismissive and rude attitude is why I will never go back and why I could never recommend to a friend. There were 6 of us. I made a reservation. It was a special occasion and it was a disappointment. With so many great options in Detroit right now, Rock City Eatery needs to step it up if it expects to stay in the game.
We enjoyed excellent noodle dishes with Asian inspired influences. Unique wedge salad. A nice find, close to Orchestra Hall and other venues, without a long wait.
This was my first time here. It was quiet as we were the only ones dining so service was just fine. I wasn’t very impressed with the food unfortunately. The seating is very uncomfortable as well.
Unique menu expertly prepared and very well explained by our server. Casual setting
Great place to go! We had a group of 6. Everyone tried something different and we all loved our meals. Only problem is the menu is confusing and difficult to read. Our waitress did a great job helping us out!
This is one of our favorite restaurants in the area. We often come to Rock City to celebrate special occasions (birthdays, Mother's Day, etc.) and it's also a place we bring friends to for a casual dinner out. The food and service is consistently great, and parking is free and easy.
The food was delicious! Our party had the duck fat fries (worth it, you can taste the difference), chicken dumplings, green beans as starters. The starters were perfectly sized and the hoisin sauce on the green beans was sweet and savory, and the beans had the perfect slightly crunchy texture. The dumplings had a five spice powder that added a nice quirky flavor, but unfortunately the chicken was not discernible in the dumplings themselves. But, the cilantro on top of the dumplings definitely helped with freshness. For mains, we had the kimchi fried rice (very spicy for those who like me and my dining companions, have a low spice tolerance), but still the flavors were awesome. Also had the Mac/cheese with mozzarella, cheddar, broccoli, chicken, and bacon (awesome deal at $16). The pasta was perfect and the Parmesan bowl was superb for crunch. Delicious! Chicken enchiladas we’re somehow sweet, and spicy, but really good. The drinks (Maidenhead, Cocktail) were well priced, well made and worth everything we paid. Our server was amazing, knowledgeable and patient. Will definitely be back again to try everything we couldn’t on this visit! Thank you also for paying respect to a great loss, Anthony Bourdain.
Excellent food and desserts!!!
You need to set up a really good coffee service. Stock hal/half
Food is great. Service was also great. Brought first times and they want to go back again.
Excellent shareable inventive international inspired food in a hip casual urban space. Everyone in my large group loved it.
We had a party of 5 and reservations at 7:15pm. Our waitress was Kristy. She was exceptional - pleasant and friendly. We all loved our food. The atmosphere was great. A slam dunk - such a wonderful experience. We'll all definitely be back and recommend to others for sure.
Food was excellent... enchilada with Mole sauce... a smidge spicy, but very tasty. Server, Whitney, was fantastic. Will definitely return.
Amazing! Food was super! Definitely will go back!
We reserved on open table and were seated right when we arrived. The waitress was super fun and helpful. The cocktails were so unique and VERY well made. Our waitress recommended the Brussel sprouts for an appetizer and we all loved them! I had the Mac and cheese in a Parmesan bowl...... great presentation and taste.( I recommend you add the mushrooms. ). I will be back!
Food was outstanding! Prices hard to beat. Very original, fresh and delish!
Awesome food. Very unique. Service was great. Very knowledgeable and could recommend dishes
Great food, great service, great location right off a QLINE stop, which further allows travel around Downtown Detroit. We enjoyed our visit to this restaurant.
We got there early our reservation was at 7, and they already had our table ready. Our waitress was fantastic! The prices were incredibly reasonable for the portions. The Mac and cheese was fantastic. We also ordered the duck fries for an app 👌👌 and I ordered the maidenhead cocktail, 3 times 😉 would recommend!!
Went there before the symphony. Reservation table was ready on time and service was very friendly and quick. Everybody's food was good, but the hamburger was the biggest hit. Would definitely go again. Lots more on the menu I want to try!
The online rating and casual atmosphere attracted us and we were not let down- wonderful, fun, quirky with delightful fare. Excellent post theater choice
Really great time. Food was delicious- we had the chicken dumplings, brisket noodles and enchiladas. All were fabulous. Margaritas were super fresh, too. Will be coming back.
Steak was perfectly cooked and drinks were very strong. Excellent!
Food was delicious, especially the mac and cheese. The service was outstanding.
It was fine. Went once before. Liked it less this time.
We went with four women. Spilt several dishes. Everything was great and all us loved our meal
Food and service was amazing as always
Chicken dumplings and Mac N Cheese we’re amazing. Great service as well, everyone was really friendly.
