Roast Bar is the ideal spot to relax and enjoy delicious cocktails whilst looking down on the hustle and bustle of London’s oldest market.
Very rude girls that met us at the door ruined the experience. The waiters however were very friendly and made a great effort. Though I was annoyed by the rudeness of the girl who greeted us leaving us standing for 10 or more mins rather than suggesting a drink at the bar. Also didn't think to ask to take my girlfriends jacket to the cloakroom. Poor.
We ended up in the restaurant which was fabulous would come again
Great for a catch up with friends! Food & Cocktails are delicious
So good to people watch from the orangery into the bustling borough market.
The Market menu (before 5.30pm) is great value
Vegetarian breakfast options need a freshen up, veggie sausage a bit bland.
When my friend and I arrived we were over looked when waiting to be shown to our table, with staff serving the business men waiting in the queue behind us and ignoring us until we drew their attention. The waiter who attended our table appeared more interested in getting us out of there as quickly as possible, rather than attending to our needs and we found him abrupt and unfriendly. I asked for my meat to be done medium but instead was brought medium rare and so although the meat was good quality it was not as nice as I had hoped. The food itself was good and came quickly, and the portion was a good size. The bar itself is lovely with large windows, and there was live music when we were there which added to the atmosphere. However, this was slightly spoilt by the crowd of businessmen who were practically sat on our table because of how little space there was between the table and the bar. Overall the meal was average but I probably wouldn't go back.
The service at the table was good, however, the reception at the front desk was less than friendly. Food was great and good value for money.
The atmosphere and food were excellent. The only thing that was a problem was when the bill was wrong. It was £8 more than it should be, but when pointed out it was rectified with an apology.
Pancakes were the best I have ever had... and I have eaten a lot of pancakes in my time!
This was my first time at a stalwart which has endured. In some ways out of fashion - it takes bookings, it has a 'traditional' menu set up (no small plates or sharing here - thank goodness) and seems in many ways founded on an ethos of great service. This is 'thinking' service, delivered with plenty of smiles and skill but with sensitivity and a sense of moment.
The food is well sourced, cooked with care and the menu offers something for most tastes. My Halibut was good, my friends Roast Lamb very good. The Chocolate and Salted Caramel dessert delivers what you want.
But overall I came away delighted with the service and with the knowledge that Roast is the standard bearer for reliable good 'proper' restaurant food in an area which is buzzy and lively but has a somewhat transient restaurant population.
Poor service, took ages for main courses to come and mine was cold. Had to chase desserts. very expensive for poor quality
Loved the location and atmosphere. We had a table in the bar area (as requested) which looked onto the market. As this was a lunch stop, we requested the bar menu. Food and desserts delicious and cocktail menu fab. Impressed to see they stock a Scottish beer from a brewery not far us at home and know well. Our waitress was lovely which added to the experience as I thought door staff were a teeny bit condescending when I said I wanted to dine in the bar and not the restaurant. Would definitely return and recommend.
Very good steaks, perfectly cooked. Good choice and recommendation of wine. A very pleasant atmosphere and excellent service.
Booked the table for my partners 50th Birthday as a surprise with friends. The music and food were good. Sadly the service was not, it appeared that they had one waiter on the tables within the bar and whilst he was doing his best he was clearly overrun with us waiting what seemed to be forever to be served, this continued to be a running theme throughout the night. Topped off with being overcharged for our wine, spoken to abruptly by another member of staff and then having to wait for coats as they could not find them. Thankfully we enjoyed the company of our friends and the food. We may have visited on a bad nght based on other reviews but Roast you really need to improve your service or more reviews will be along these lines.
We had a great time until we finished our main meal. It then took 20 minutes to clear our plates and a further 1 hour 15mins for coffee and dessert which ruined the whole experience.
Very dissapointing, Roast continues to be very hit and miss. This was a miss.
One of the most overpriced restaurant experiences I have had in a while. To summarise: I knew more about the wine list than the Sommelier (he insisted on bringing a Spanish wine to try that I already knew I did not like) and was insulted when the waiter suggested I should really order the steak cooked the way he wanted and not the way I wanted.
Basically dont go.
The restaurant, food and service are very professional. Very busy and noisy at lunchtime.
I had the beef and found it a bit stringy. They mark their wine list up by the glass and carafe but obviously when you order a bottle the price is quite a bit higher. Wine list generally is very expensive
Bar staff were very attentive and cocktails were really well balanced.
As always we really enjoyed our trip to roast! Will certainly be back soon.
Just there for drinks, but nice atmosphere.
Another great meal from start to finish. Great, unhurried service & excellent food in a wonderful, lively atmosphere. Hurrah!
I love going to the bar at roast usually before dinner but this time we only had time for cocktails! Which were great as usual. We would have food in the bar but the menu was too limited.
Having enjoyed drinks and snacks in the bar at Roast recently I suggested it when meeting an old flame as I wanted somewhere with flexibility to just have a drink and run if things were awkward, stay for a while longer if it was OK, and go for a full dinner if it went really well. Also, in popular Borough/Bermondsey it was great just to be able to book a table and be sure of having somewhere to sit - perhaps I'm getting old but these things matter! Despite arriving to find our table set for dinner, we weren't pressured to order more than we wanted; as it was we ended up staying for a very good meal of charcuterie and fish & chips. Live music was enjoyable but in a fairly confined space perhaps too loud at times. Very highly recommended!
Restaurant booked, confirmation sent, my client informed several days before the meal
But when I arrived, the entire restaurant was closed for a private party, and I was told that I couldn't possibly have a reservation, and I should have called. Isn't that the point of Opentable?
Hugely embarrassing, and frankly incompetent from both Roast and Opentable
I will be telling my office never to book with Roast or through Opentable again
