Contemporary American
The garden setting; attentive service; seasonal food sourced from local markets; line-caught fish and naturally raised meats. These are the building blocks of a great restaurant. But for Rivoli we mean to provide a bit more. Our inspiration comes from the root source of the word restaurant – to restore. To dine at Rivoli is to come away with a renewed faith in good works and life.

For a generation, Rivoli has promoted the singular talents of our Chef. The frequently changing menu is inspired by the bounty of the seasons and composed with a basic love of good food. Our Mid-Century Modern décor will slow the pace of your evening. Our intuitive service will indulge you. Enjoy a little respite from your day. We hope to see you soon at Rivoli.

Beautiful food in a setting where we're made to feel welcome. A little too loud at times for good conversation. Still remembering some of those tastes!

Service was slow-we had to flag down someone to ask if we had a server-no one even glanced our way, and we were in the middle of the room.before
Being seated we wanted to order a cocktail from the bar-the bartender didn’t even speak to us or ask what we wanted. He was not regarding us at all & seemed overwhelmed. One of the guests was angry at the service. I have eaten here many times, but not in a few years since we moved away. Food was outstanding, service failed-the waiter was new in his defense.

The room and drinks were wonderful. The first bites were very dog . The entrees were both over cooked particularly the salmon which I had requested to be medium rare.

Impeccable service. Understated design; pleasing and serene. Did get noisy when the restaurant filled up, but we could still carry on comfortable conversation. Deviled eggs, oysters, parmigiana soufflé, Caesar salad, tomato soup, scallop entree, bread and butter, rose’ were all excellent. Portobello fritters weren’t as exciting as I once found them ; could just be me. The berry breeze cocktail was downright boring. My steak entree was fine, but not lovable. The best parts of that entree were the sauce and Romano beans. Ice cream sundae was not thrilling. All in all, a lovely experience and I’ll return for more special occasions. The staff, from greeter to kitchen workers to waitstaff, is flawless.

Eating at Rivoli is always such a treat. The picture window overlooking the garden, the innovative and delicious menu items, the great service, the coziness of the place -- we just love everything about it.

We made reservations expecting to have a wonderful dining experience. Unfortunately, from the moment we stepped in the front door, the experience was disappointing. The maitre d' was surly and not welcoming, the server was initially friendly, but made several mistakes. We had specifically requested that the salmon be on the rare side, but it was totally overcooked and dry; we couldn't catch the server's attention so started eating it (when he finally came over after we were almost finished and told him that the salmon was overcooked, he responded that "I thought it looked overcooked..."; the sauce on the salmon was sweet (ugh); the ratatouille was tasteless and the polenta was over salted; one of our all time favorites, the portobella mushroom fritters were small and soggy. Oh, and another unexpected and very off-putting thing was that everything from the plates, utensils and our arms stuck to the table (and we were the first dinners at that table that evening!). The whole experience was VERY disappointing and we don't intend to return.

We had a great experience at Rivoli. The restaurant is beautiful. The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. The food and drinks are excellent. The menu constantly changes so there are always new things to try, and the staff is great at explaining anything you have questions about. This is easily one of the best restaurants in Berkeley.

Everything was very good! My only surprise was that there wasn’t even one pasta dish ion the menu. I had two appetizers for dinner and both were unique and delicious! Two of us had the steak. They were cooked to perfection.
The wait staff were friendly and knowledgeable Definitely will return!

This is still my very favorite restaurant in Berkeley, after many years in the running with other great restaurants. Always delicious food, great service, and the lovely garden. We split the portobello mushroom fritters (always!), a salad, and the corn risotto. We were both very happy and satisfied.

I'm very sad to write this review. My family has lived near Solano Avenue for five years and Rivoli has been my favorite restaurant for this period of time. It has always been the choice for celebrations--birthdays, anniversaries, visits from friends far and wide. We had dinner there on Monday night, my birthday. We were kept waiting for half an hour beyond our reserved time. Once seated I did have my favorite steak tartare (excellent) and scallops (very good). The chocolate cake we ordered to share was very dry and almost tasteless. The experience was a disappointment.

Superior attention to the flavors of every item on the plate whether vegetable, fish, or meat. Subtly creative taste combinations. Good volume. Restful atmosphere. Thorough knowledge of the wine list. Friendly and warm service but could be a bit more disciplined. This was one of our go to restaurants for special occasions but over time I felt the cooking expertise had slipped some. We haven’t gone for a couple of years probably. They are fully back, on top of their game. Better, even, than before.

I love Rivoli. It's my go-to place for a fancy meal -- reliably good, a calm, relaxed but classy atmosphere, unpretentious. Always interested to see how they use the seasonal produce.

We had to wait a bit for our reserved table but I realize that's often out of their control. We liked the interesting white wine they suggested for us. An intensely concentrated tomato soup tasted wonderfully tomato-ey but almost too sweet, as if extra sugar had been added unnecessarily. The mushroom fritters never fail to be delicious. Lovely fresh risotto with juicy bits of smoked corn and tomato that made every bite burst with a variety of flavors. We loved the Valrhona chocolate cake with gelato but found the generous sprinkles of toffee to be a bit tooth-stickingly sweet -- more candy than "hazelnut." So I guess emphasis on the sugar that night, but I will return annually (or so) as always.

I haven't dined at Rivoli since I moved from the Bay Area over 10 years ago, but I came again recently on vacation. The restaurant was exactly as I remembered: delicious food, the beautiful garden view, attentive and friendly service that's not overly formal. Portion sizes feel large for the price. Rivoli's strong suit (for me) has traditionally been starters and desserts. We had both the Caesar salad (one of the best Caesars I've had anywhere, and a mainstay on the menu) and the fattoush-inspired Heirloom Tomato & Pita salad (a summer favorite), as well as the Parmigiano Soufflé. Desserts were equally outstanding (Hot Fudge Sundae & Gateau Basque). The entrees we ordered (Smoked Corn Risotto and NY Steak) exceeded our expectations. The waiter, Chris, was friendly - we never felt rushed or pressured during our meal, and he recommended some of the menu items we enjoyed the most. The restaurant can get loud - it's a small-ish space with tables that are fairly close together. We came at a late seating so the noise died down a lot by the end of the meal.

The staff here is fantastic. You really notice the elevated service here. Everyone was knowledgeable and friendly but professional. We had the deviled eggs, scallops and the steak. Deviled eggs were okay, but everything else was mouth watering and the portions were generous for fine dining. We also enjoyed the wines by the glass. Nice range in the selection and they offered to let me taste if I wasn’t sure about my selection. The space is small, the ambiance lively but intimate and the decor/garden view wall is truly spectacular. Definitely worth the trip. Perfect for a date night.

What a great find close to Berkeley. This is a small quaint restaurant with a limited menu. The food was outstanding and the atmosphere is special with a wall of windows, trees and green space as the backdrop. The staff is knowledgeable, engaging, and they take a team approach to help ensure a great dining experience. We will definitely visit again next time we are in the area.

First happy surprise, they have Willet Rye. Next was that the appetizers were small but very well made. Everyone was quite pleased with their meal and the view out the floor to ceiling glass into their lush garden was amazing and made me feel like I was in a James Bond villain lair. Wonderful experience, thank you.

Our dinner at Rivoli was to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and it served that purpose very well. The dining room is very pleasant with the window/garden wall and a nice ambience, with a mixed group of apparently happy diners, none of whom was speaking too loudly – a rarity these days. The restaurant is well-run, making the most of its limited space; service was very good. The food was very good but did not have that special spark present in the very best restaurants. It was disappointing to find that one dishes posted on the menu outside (rack of lamb) had run out the night before. The NY steak that replaced it was simply OK, but the side dishes were excellent. Sea bass had also run out and the wild salmon that replaced it was, again, simply OK. Wines are good but expensive, so it was gratifying that the corkage fee was $25, which is reasonable for a restaurant of this quality and price range.

My wife and I dined at Rivoli for our anniversary. The staff were warm and welcoming, finding us a table with a great view of the garden and decorating our table with little hearts.

The host steered us to a lovely mourvedre from Sonoma.

While the vegetarian options on the menu were limited, they were absolutely wonderful.

Ricotta gnocchi served with burnt peach, marcona almonds, and sage butter. The fruit was a an interesting twist, and the gnocchi were wonderfully light.

The portobello fritters are apparently a menu mainstay and came with a tangy aioli. They were very good, but seemed a little out of place with the rest of the menu.

The host also treated us to a small taste of the white corn soup, which was the highlight of the meal.

We both ordered the summer lasagne entree, which I found to be too rich for my taste, but my wife adored it.

The chicken tetrazzini was outstanding and so was the corn soup. Our waiter was charming and attentive. It was chilly in the room which was distracting and it is very loud. Not great for a large table for conversing, but it was a fun Friday night out! I highly recommend this and will bring a heavier sweater next time!

We arrived and there were celebratory sequins on the table because I had indicated we were celebrating a birthday when I made the online reservation. They also brought sorbet with a candle at the end of the meal. All the food was excellent! With 3 people on our party with celiac we had to be careful when ordering. The server was very knowledgeable and even when a dish wasn’t already gluten free, they made accommodations to make it gluten free. We could eat almost everything on the menu. They even make their own gluten free bread! It was an outstanding meal with exemplary service. We can’t wait to go again.
