Step into the River Cottage Café

Tucked just inside the entrance to our site, the River Cottage Café is a cosy, dog friendly spot to pause for breakfast, lunch or something sweet. Set above our award winning Cookery School, it’s perfectly perched to take in sweeping views across the Axe Valley.

Our ever-changing seasonal menu celebrates the best organic produce from our farm and trusted local growers. Expect fresh, thoughtful dishes, great coffee and a laid-back welcome.

While you’re here, take a moment to browse our book nook, where you’ll find a full collection of River Cottage books to enjoy with your lunch or a slice of cake.
On select evenings, we host ticketed Dining Feasts in our threshing barn at the bottom of the hill. So if the café appears open but no tables are available to book, it may be in preparation for one of these events.

Really good feel about this place, the people are great, not only good at their jobs but have a feeling of being more than just employees. food of course was superb - mushrooms on toast with the River twist is not to be missed. Thanks all we loved it.

The slow cooked beef shin ragu was tough and partially inedible. The pork and beans was average and not very tasty. The Kedgeree was delicious. Service was very slow and apart from the lady who showed us to our table, was straight faced and not very friendly. Menus were dog eared, and very restricted. This used to be a lovely place, but it has gone down hill.

First time at River Cottage since the Axminster kitchen closed. Really enjoyed being back and enjoyed the food. Sad that, on a day when they didn’t look over busy, they had no kedgeree left at 11.15, especially as it also appears on the brunch/lunch menu. But the food we had was lovely and the young lady serving us was really apologetic.

Wedecided to visit your Cafe as we were holidaying nearby in West Bay Dorset. Sadly I have to report we left your cafe very underwhelmed to say the least. We new it would be pricey due to the hi profile and celebrity status. Was prepared to pay this as we were expecting a pretty special experience. We all ordered what we wanted. After quite a wait we noticed other people getting their food before us and noticed the young girl who took our order looking stressed and clearly remonstrating with the two management figures who were having a meeting. The two ‘managers’ swiftly disappeared (one into a staff room that was directly next to where we were sitting). Shortly after that we were informed that there wasn’t any sausage’s (£3.50 a pop I might add) we were told we could have the first part of our meal with the sausages following on afterwards. They never appeared. We were given another round of drinks to ease the wait however still no sausage’s, at that point we concluded it they were never going to arrive.We left without paying anything due to this. If I hadn’t ordered the extra sausage my breakfast of two poached eggs on one unbuttered slice of toast it would have cost £8.50, jog on HFW. Do not blame the young lady who served us, this is clearly a management failing. Not having a key breakfast ingredient readily available when selling breakfast to people is pretty amateurish at best.

Setting was amazing. Got the order wrong, clearly understaffed, and ate alone whilst they redid partners meal. Rushed and a wasted opportunity for a great meal

We waited a while before being seated. Short menu with one item sold out (at 1.00!). The soup was tepid and the bread hard and stale. The other meal portions were small. Our waitress never smiled once and her 'sorry about that' had no sincerity. Their restaurant in Axminster was great but we won't be going back to River Cottage anytime soon.
