River & Rail Ratings and Reviews
Love the atmosphere and the ability to eat local and the unusual menu, which includes rabbit, lamb, alligator, quail, and venison. Everything was brought to the table quickly.
The four of us had:
Antipasto / Charcuterie / Cheese / Black Garlic / Pickles $16: Good appetizer.
Gumbo /Blue Crab / Alabama Okra $14: Flavor was ok, but not very filling. Once the inedible, uncrackable, tiny whole crab was removed, there was not much substance remaining. Since we wanted to crack open and taste the crab, I asked the server how, hoping he would bring us a tool, but he said he does not have any way to open the crab. Therefore, the crab was wasted.
Catfish / Fried Whole / Pimento Grits / Pepper Jelly / Louisiana Slaw $12: Good, but tedious to navigate all the bones of a whole catfish.
Venison / Osso Buco / Spaghetti Squash / Braising Vegetables $18. Good, but not memorable. The portion size was too small to share. If we go to River and Rail again, I would be more likely to get a lower-priced, more filling dish. The server said a more filling dish is the Lamb / Bolognese / Semolina Pasta $12.
The chardonnay is good.
My wife and I have eaten at this restaurant a number of times since its opening and have never had a bad meal. While some of the dishes will challenge conservative eaters everything we have ever eaten at R&R has been amazing. Brunch on Saturday or Sunday is also great (one of the few restaurants open on Sunday in the area).
A comfortable venue with some personality. The staff were welcoming and friendly. Our server was very good by explaining the menu and had a nice balance of being attentive but not disruptive. We were all a little disappointed with the food preparation but in fairness what was lacking for us may have been on point for another. We would definitely go back again because the menu changes with the local seasons.
Im a foodie and i also have a culinary degree. So i am open to prices and foods and i understand that its geared for sharing and tapas kind of idea. And while the prices themselves werent bad i personally felt as if the portions were to small food and drinks. I had counting sheep a 12 dollar cocktail which was yummy but it had ice sphere (very cool) it took up most of the space in the glass again very little alcohol for 12 bucks. But overall the food was delicious service great ambience was nice. I just left there hungry.
What a delightful find in uptown. We went in for oysters and beer and ended up staying for the entire evening. We sat at the bar with Kelsey(?) who was an absolute delight. She guided us through the menu and had plenty of beer knowledge. After the oysters we had the tartar, the Rosso buco and finished with goat cheese cake and local honey. This was an absolutely amazing experience. We will be back for more very soon. Thank you guys for what you are doing.
Great menu with local ingredients. We were informed most of the farms are from Georgia and Alabama but Chef will go a little further to buy the best quality product. You can really taste the love and passion they are putting into everything. I loved the beer list, my S.O. really enjoyed their cocktail and after dinner drink. Great atmosphere and vibe in the building, it did not feel like Columbus but was as welcome as Columbus is. Can not wait to return.
What a find. Maybe this town is finally coming around. The changes and directions that are being made in downtown are apparent with these guys. To start the decor and vibe is absolutely amazing, then to be topped by top notch service and mind altering food. Beer menu was superb. The alligator, cauliflower soup in a pumpkin and tartar are must haves. We shared a whole stuffed flounder with crab, fennel, and shrimp topped with a herb saint citronella. Chef Bradley prepared this for us as an off menu item he was working on he said.
Can not wait to return.
This was our second time at River + Rail, and it lived up to our memories! Excellent and interesting cocktails (bring back Don Quixote!), delicious food, great service. We will continue to recommend this restaurant to friends, and return whenever we are in Columbus.
We arrived late, really late. The hostess couldn't not have been kinder helping us get to a table and have an amazing dining experience. We were blown away with the food. This town has progressed in a great way. We are so lucky to have a southern chef that has traveled and is bringing his passion and love to Columbus. Alligator, Chargrilled Oysters and Whole fish are must haves. Beautiful setting, great staff. Can not wait to return. Keep up guys.
We ate on the patio. Absolutely stunning environment. Our serve Jon, was on point helping us through the menu. Every suggestion was on point. The Cheese platter and Cauliflower soup were amazing to start. We then split the Veal, Venison, and the rabbit gumbo. Finishing off with Goatcheese cake and local honey. Ill be back for brunch this weekend.
We arrived very early for our reservation after wrapping up at a conference early. We had been recommended this by a colleague. We dined on the chargrill oysters, Cauliflower soup that was served in a PUMPKIN and finished off with the best bread pudding that I have ever had. The owners have put tremendous thought into the decor, the food, and have trained their staff well. Really the total package. Will be returning for a work Christmas party in December.
Reminds me of my grandmothers cooking. Meet Chef Bradley, he's from Louisiana. You could tell thats where his cooking started, its subtly there in all the food. He said he tries to draw inspirations from his life, obviously being an LA boy that was a huge influence. Stormy and I think Tyson were whom we spoke to on staff, they seem to in love with their jobs which is quite refreshing. Try the meat board and the quail. I think I'm still full
Enjoyed the patio, which is one of few in Columbus. Jon our server kept us laughing through our dining experience. We are returning soon for our sons military graduation next month and our looking forward to that experience. Really can not say enough about this place and wish it continued success.
We went on a Saturday night with a party of 8. The food and cocktails were amazing and the decor and ambiance are sophisticated and beautiful! The chef prepared several items for us that were not on the menu and everyone in our party left happy. Will definitely be back again and again! Best spot in Columbus!
To say I was disappointed is an understatement. Although the decor was gorgeous (love the large Bo Bartlett painting in the front - but you really should educate your hostess on who the artist is), the specialty drinks were interesting, and our waiter was dynamic, the food was so terrible that I will never go back. My order of shrimp encrusted flounder: the fish was overcooked and tough, and the shrimp tasted so fishy I was afraid it had gone bad - literally, I could not eat it. My grandson ordered the hamburger sliders, and the meat was so overcooked it was tough and inedible. My daughter's rabbit was passable, but only passable. My other grandson had the octopus, which he couldn't eat because it was too spicy. The only good thing about River and Rail is that Kilwin's chocolate shop is next door, which is where we went to at least get something delicious to eat before heading home.
Went back to celebrate another milestone accomplishment! This time, we were there for dinner and the food was outstanding. The cheese plate had pickled blueberries (oh, wow!) that were such an unexpected treat. Seriously great food, and super nice folks to boot.
The overall experience was just missing some of the nicer refinements for a restaurant of that price. I’m being really picky here but the service needed some more practice. They didn’t clean the table before bringing out more food. We had to help with the process of moving dishes around. They did a great job on keeping my water filled. I would have liked a description of the food when it was delivered. The cocktail I had was watered down. My wife’s cocktail was really good. The scallops were a little cold. The cheese was good and the flounder was excellent. Lastly the restaurant was beautiful and really well layout. Very impressed by the decorations. I would go to this restaurant again.
I booked River & Rail for a late brunch with my son before I had to fly home. The food was excellent, our waitress was super nice, and the bartender was willing to tackle making me a drink she had never heard of - and knocked it out of the park! We will definitely go back next time we're in Columbus.
I had high expectations based on the menu and website reviews but the ambiance and decor was the part that was best.
The food was just good to very good and the service was below average especially for a nicer restaurant.
The charcuterie was to come with beignets but they were more like Native American indian fry bread thicker and chewier.
The bullfrog breading was coming off as I tried to eat it and was not crunchy because too bathed in the sauce. Part of thighs were undercooked.
The Octopus and pork belly was a disappointment because the Octopus texture and also the pork belly was cut up too small and lost in garden of kale.
The elote was the best taste of everything.
I wanted to try dessert but received my check before I could order any.
Also I would recommend more mid level wine options.
I may give it another chance but will try other items.
tasty meal- chef made creative dishes. tried almost every appetizer and was pleased with almost all. favorites-corn apettizer, gnocchi, meat plate, cheese plate all delicious. enjoyed hamburger and venison. great place for sharing. will be back to try everything we missed. Next time I think we will order desert first as we saved no room this visit. nice find for hard to please miami crowd.
