River: A Waterfront Restaurant & Bar
River: A Waterfront Restaurant & Bar features Prime Steaks and fabulously prepared Italian food, including house-made fresh pasta, wood-fired artisanal pizzas, locally-sourced seafood, and beautifully handcrafted desserts.
The service here was amazing! We attend buffet brunches all over the state and this by far had the best service. In addition, the price includes 2 alcoholic drinks which was a nice surprise. I eat plant based and there were several options for me and everything was delicious. The only negative is when we asked about the types of sushi they had because of an intolerance to shell fish we were told that certain ones were salmon when in fact they were crab. If we had a true allergy that would have been unfortunate! Overall though, this is a wonderful brunch!
We have been to River a few times and have never had a good experience. We’ve gone there for the outdoor seating and the view. This last time we were inside due to the temperature and rain, and it is a beautiful restaurant but the service and food is always hit or miss. The only good part of our experience is our server Ryan. Ryan is an excellent server and the restaurant is very lucky to have him. He is what makes the experience not get less than two stars
Please read my terrible experience on messenger.
I wouldn’t recommend this place at any time it might be busy. It was horrendous!
I have been to River Restaurant for a retirement party and we had a buffet which was excellent. We went back for brunch a couple of times which is also excellent. This weekend we’re had dinner before going to Mohegan Sun for a concert and everyone in our party had an excellent meal. Still trying to get there for happy hour during the warm weather so we can go out on the deck!
Very nice quiet place, love the ambiance. Great customer service, great prices, food is great.
Excellent meals and fast service. We were very impressed!
the restaurant was beautifully decorated for Fall. Our lunch server was Bill who was very polite and patient with us. Food was delicious!
Very nice place. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our Anniversary celebratory meal in a quiet romantic atmosphere. The service is fantastic and the food was excellent. We will be back.
Joe was our server and he didn't miss a beat. Meals were all very good and the chocolate cake was decadent.
We came in from out of town and found this place online. The views looked beautiful and we decided to give it a try. We were a little confused when our Uber driver dropped us off in front of a large industrial looking office building. When we walked in we were very impressed by the ambience of beautiful room with a gorgeous view of roaring river, trees , and a beautiful deck. Unfortunately it was pouring rain and kind of cold out so we were seated by the window. Our waiter was a very friendly young man, although he did not seem sure about the questions that we asked about wine and food. He brought us a sample of some wine that he recommended, and we did not enjoy it so we ordered a different kind and he was very friendly and helpful. We asked a few questions about the menu and he made a couple of off hand recommendations. The menu was a bit confusing, because it mentions many different kinds of pasta you may not be familiar with, but basically everything on the menu comes with pasta. I was looking more for something without pasta and had difficulty finding anything. Our waiter recommended a lobster dish with fresh mozzarella when I said I was looking for something with less pasta. Imagine my surprise when my dish arrived and it was a bowl of pasta the size of my head with lobster and mozzarella in it with a tomato sauce. It was basically lobster marinara. Not very pleasant tasting. I ate the lobster and some mushrooms and left the rest.. My partner ordered asiago salmon. Which was a very large plate, the salmon was good although the salmon and cheese combo was not something that was overly appealing, He decided to try it. And said it was “Ok” My partner wanted a B and B which they did not have. I asked for an Appletini and it was awful. Then a lemon drop which was worse. Sent both back. Advice to management:MORE TRAINING FOR STAFF and much better bar stock. Beautiful place but far from its potential.
Good Afternoon Sir, We apologize that you visit was not up to your satisfaction! Please know that we take all of our guests' comments extremely seriously and will be addressing your server and bartender, to ensure that they continue to provide true River service. In addition, we will be discussing your comments with our team in the kitchen! Once again we apologize and hope to have you back soon, so that we may show you what River is all about! Patrick Henney, Owner
This is a Diamond in the rough. You must visit for lunch or dinner. The food, staff, and management is the best
Thank you so much! We will be certain to share your comment along to the staff! Have a wonderful day! Patrick Henney, Owner
Service got off to a slow start. Ryan was a nice guy but a little overwhelmed. Maybe the manager should step up if a server is injured and the remaining servers have to cover their tables plus the tables of the injured server. Food was delicious as always. Just a bit of an off night on the service side
My husband ordered filet Mignon medium and it came out way overcooked. I had the swordfish and the sides were very oily.
Good Afternoon Jess, We apologize that your dining experience was less than what you expected! We will be passing your comments along to our team to ensure that your experience will not be repeated. We hope to see you again soon so that you may enjoy some of our other delicious offerings that may be more to your liking! Sincerely, Patrick Henney, Owner
I shared a lunch time reunion with friends here. We all ordered a basic salad with various additions and were all happy with our meals. The service was friendly, helpful and timely. I also ate here last year for a dinner meal. The rating of service for that time is the same and the lobster ravioli was great!
There were four of us dining together to celebrate our wedding anniversaries. First of all, they certainly make it a challenge to find the restaurant - there's a little neon sign on a door of a large office building. Not one of us could say enough about the food - it was one of the best meals out we've ever had. However, the noise level was almost unbearable - we almost asked for our food to be wrapped so we could leave. The view is lovely and I suppose that's the reason for the open room plan, so that everyone could at least get a glimpse of the water. Thank you.
Saturday bunch for me,lunch for wife.Neat combo menu.!
Everything was lovely. The staff made an excellent effort to seat us by a window with a beautiful view of the river. The clam chowder was spicy. In my 50 uears on earth, themis is the first restaurant I've ever been to that tells you this and then actually backs up this claim. It was excellent. As was the crab bruschetta.
I had the Seafood Linguine which was half good. The seafood was prepared and cooked expertly. The linguine was inconsistent. It was a weird thing to get wrong, but it wasn't inedible. Just a little oddly firm and sticky. My wife had the Sicilian Swordfish and it was perfect.
All in all, would definitely recommend and will definitely go back.
Great ambiance with a beautiful, peaceful view of the river. We saw crew teams floating by. Service was efficient and friendly and food was great! The salmon was well prepared with a delicious pesto risotto. Kale salad was flavored with a honey dressing and was great.
This was my 3rd visit & my 2nd brunch visit. Everything was great, including the staff. I will definitely be returning.
We were there to celebrate our anniversary, service was very good, food was excellent and the view overlooking the river was stunning.
Very enjoyable although as it got busier the service slowed down. Would definitely go back. Nice ambiance and lots of outdoor seating.
GREAT location and view but food is not at the same level. Meal was just ok. I would go back to give the venue another chance. Very pleasant environment & great wait staff.
Perfect day to be sitting outside watching the river flow.
Food was first-class.
Cassandra was our server and she was aces.
The restruant is beauticful, food was very good,
a bit pricey for the quantity
OUR FOOD WAS SO GOOD.
SEASONED SO WELL.
VERY FRESH AND TASTY.
THE SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT.
WE ENJOYED OUR DINING OUT EXPERIENCE BY THE RIVER.
Brought friends for a first time visit. Food was not up to the standards experienced on other visits.
Menu seems to have changed with fewer offerings and no pizza.
Staff was singing along with music playing like it was karaoke. Very distracting since the singing was not great.
Have enjoyed River in past visits but next time will consider alternatives.
Many of the recent reviews of River have been disappointing. We had dined there in the early spring and it was just ok. This past Friday we returned with another couple. Our experience was much better. We had requested a table by the window and they were able to meet our request. We had an excellent server--Kristen M.--she was knowledgeable and very attentive. She did not hesitate to offer her opinion on different menu items when asked. The cocktails were excellent and inventive. Our meals were quite good. I had lamb in a pastry shell with goat cheese risotto. It was quite good and the risotto was wonderful. You cannot beat the view and the ambience of the restaurant. I would note that every wait person we passed entering and leaving the restaurant welcomed us or thanked us for coming. They were all very friendly. The hostess staff should learn to be as gracious. They were not engaging at all.
We will certainly return to River again.
Wonderful setting, food is delicious, staff very friendly.... need to try for dinner love the menu
This was the second time I visited River. I was there for a lunch meeting and just had to return for dinner. We celebrated my daughter's birthday and had a great time. The view of the CT River is so unique for a restaurant in this area. A great setting. Then the waitress was outstanding and added to our enjoyment
of the evening. Her recommendation were right on. The food and cocktails were top notch. A great evening.
It was my first time at the River for a late lunch (2:30)....Our server, Joe M. was very good. Two of us started our meal with the Lobster Bisque - it was very good. Two of us had a steak burger - they said it was good but not fantastic. I had the Mediterranean Pizza - found the crust to be extremely soggy and too many onion for my taste. Would not order it again....they need to par cook and drain the spinach to be dry before putting it on the pizza and it should be on top of the cheese not directly on the crust - raw spinach has too much water in it if you don't par cook and drain/dry it. A good chef would know this. Overall the place was nice - views of the river were fantastic - may go back and give it another try - but I think they need to look at their cooking staffs' ability.....have a friend who has gone to the
River 6 times and says every meal she has had was nothing to write home about - food is edible but not great by any means.
Excellent brunch served in a casual yet chic setting. Great view of the river from the spacious patio. First rate!
It was raining so unfortunately the deck was closed. I gave service a 4 because we had a newer server who made a few mistakes, but I will say that they recovered quickly
Our server Kristain was very pleasant and attentive. Will return again.
Party of 6 with reservation for 7. Had to wait and we were seated in the bar. Couldn’t hear ourselves talk, ordered drinks, one drink that was requested we were told they ran out of one of the ingredients!!! Ordered appetizers and that took 40 minutes to Get! Ordered dinner at the same time we ordered appetizers, I would say we ordered dinner at 7:20. We did not get our dinners until 8:30 and that was after we asked several staff members to check! Our waiter was very nice but unfortunately was busy behind the bar.....very unorganized wait staff. One of the meals we ordered came out wrong, asked for seafood fra Diavlo and got white sauce, lamb burger was so salty it couldn’t be finished, lobster ravioli swimming in sauce, chicken dish had tiny piece of chicken sitting a top of risotto and creamed spinach. We had to ask for waters and had to ask for salt and pepper. Considering our bill was close to 300$, I would say it was totally not worth it.....very disappointing!!!!!
Five of us were celebrating birthdays for two people in our party. The Restaurant for 4 of us was the first time. We sat outside and were delighted with the views and the food. We all decided that it would be a great place to return to. THANKS!
Best server ever! Shane was fantastic
Wonderful lunch. Great atmosphere and setting. If nice weather the setting is beautiful to sit outside. Food and service were perfect.
This is my new favorite place for summer dining. Came for Saturday lunch and was pleasantly surprised to find that they were serving brunch. Great food at lunch, and even better at dinner. Wonderful to sit on the outside patio with a great view of the Connecticut River. Great service too.
The view and setting is beautiful, I felt it was a bit pricey. Our waiter was very attentive but we asked for separate checks and didn't get them. Have many nice choices on the menu. Wine was a over priced. Empty dining room but they sat everyone next to each other.
I took my husband here for lunch after seeing an advertisement on a billboard. I love an opportunity to dine outside and summer is waning, so it made sense to jump at the chance to experience this restaurant while there was still a mild day to do so. We were both a little put off from the start when we received two different menus from the hostess. After we ordered, our server returned to inform us that my husband's meal was not available for lunch: he had ordered from the dinner menu, that the server promptly took back. Our server was friendly and pleasant, but there was also a misunderstanding about the specials, causing more mild frustration. In the end, we food we finally did order was delicious. The view is pleasant, with plenty of deck seating to take in the river. Inside, it appeared as nearly all the tables had a view of the CT River. It seemed like a beautiful spot to dine on a snowy evening. The frozen drink that was showcased on their website was refreshing, but subpar in the flavorful or tantalizing aspect, as well as a little light on the key ingredient: tequila. Ours was not a stellar first experience, but we are intrigued enough by its potential to go back another time. I hope to be able to raise my stars next time.
