Riva Cucina Ratings and Reviews
Only one of four enjoyed her main course. The lamb shank was tasteless, everything brown. The gnocchi were tough and the duck sauce tasted like the shards of the lamb. Endive salad was delicious. Excellent wine. Dessert - nonna - was delicious and made in Italy. It was clear we were disappointed with food not eaten; waiter gave us one piece of cake as a token.
Lovely room and ambiance! The New Year’s Eve menu was wonderfully crafted. There was a variety of great sounding salads which in hindsight wish we had ordered instead of the lobster bisque. As far as bisques go, it was executed well but the taste was bland. Tha pasta was excellent and reminded us of pasta dishes we had in Italy. The star of the dinner was the lamb shank! Simple preparation, few ingredients with amazing results! A definite winner! Worth mentioning was also the interesting selection of side dishes, including my favorite lentils! I strongly recommend Riva Cusina and look forward to my next visit !
We enjoyed a delicious halibut dinner on New Year's Eve with porcini mushrooms and sauteed spinach accompanied by a nice Napa chard. Maine lobster bisque and desserts were also delicious. Soft background music added to the comfortable ambience. Staff members were attentive and provided good service. A very enjoyable New Year's dining experience!
It’s nice that in this quiet industrial neighborhood of Berkeley there’s this quaint Italian place. But it disappointed for the following reasons: really spotty service and feeling that you’re neglected. Refills of water that was not cold. While apps were good, esp fritto misto, why is bread being charged for? Handmade pasta is supposed to mean something except if you’re ordering what should be al dente tagliatelle. It looked like it was dried out and the under seasoned sauce didn’t help much. Short ribs were fine but polenta also needed a lot of salt. Dessert of lemon cake underwhelmed and panna cotta was serviceable. But the biggest problem really was the clamoring awful noise. Bad acoustics to blame I think.
What a nice find this restaurant was! Lovely atmosphere off the beaten path with easy street parking and friendly service. We had several vegetarians in our group and were thrilled to find the delicious soup was vegan! Our fresh pasta and brussel sprouts were also highlights. Will definitely be back!
I came here for a birthday party and really enjoyed every bit of my dining experience. The waitress was friendly, helpful, and checked up on us frequently. The food was excellent and the surprise chocolate cake they gave for the birthday girl was very delicious - moist and not overly sweet. Would definitely come back again!
We love this restaurant. We have been coming here since the restaurant first opened. Quality has never waivered. The hand made gnocchi is incredible as are the various pastas. They carry a Syrah, 8 Arms, that is just lush.
When friends ask, we tell them to try here for dinner.
This was our third visit to this restaurant, which we’ve always enjoyed. Our appetizer of beet salad was smothered in a farro and lettuce shredded concoction which was barely seasoned leaving the whole dish, including the beets, which should have been the star of the dish, tasteless. The salmon was good and predictable, cooked perfectly. The branzini was salty. It arrived with “roasted potatoes” and an arugula salad with fennel. The potatoes were rock hard and cut very small, making them impossible to eat. When I told the waitress, she explained that they ARE roasted, but then they are “reheated” in a pan before serving. WT? Cooled en masse and then reheated? No wonder. They were like dry road gravel. She offered me polenta instead, which arrived after we had finished eating. We had mentioned in our reservation that we were dining for a birthday dinner, and after dinner, no dessert or coffee menu was offered. Instead, a piece of chocolate cake with a candle was brought, which would have been a nice touch, except we were not offered coffee or anything with it. I don’t recall whether tablecloths were used in the past but I did notice this time that they aren’t used (this was a Saturday night) and the ambiance suffered because of it. At the usual interval when the wait staff would scrape the crumbs from the table, (oh wait, they don’t serve bread! No crumbs) the waitress appeared with a wet rag to wipe the bare wooden varnished table. This happened at two courses. In addition, the lighting was dull, relying on a single miniscule votive in a two inch holder to illuminate our table. Overall, we were disappointed.
Very good food! Endive salad was excellent. Loved the split of breadcrumb sausage. Osso bucco was quite tasty but the light was so dim that it was hard to tell the meat from the fatty bits. The dark room with velvet theater curtain has a nice feel, but a few more lumens on the table please!
i LIKE THE HOMEMADE PASTA VERY MUCH. i HAVE BEEN GOING HERE REGULARLY SINCE IT FIST OPENED SOME YEARS AGO. THE ONE PROBLEM IS HAVE IS THAT THE PASTA OFFERINGS ON THE MENU DO NOT CHANGE FREQUENTLY. SINCE I GO TO RIVA CUCINA ABOUT EVERY 3 MONTHS, AND ALWAYS WANT PASTA, THIS IS A DRAWBACK
Came here as party of six to celebrate a birthday. The location is somewhat out-of-the-way, but easy to get to. Parking is easy at night as there's not much open then. Atmosphere is nice, well decorated, but slightly dark and noisy. All six of us thought the food was okay, but not great. Portions are generally small, but prices seem consistent with that. Waitress brought free slice of cake for the birthday boy. Desserts were excellent. The best thing about the restaurant.
We go to Riva Cucina often, usually on Wednesday nights when we can bring our own wine with no corkage fee which leave more $$ to order more of the terrific food. It's easy to get a same day reservation and occasionally we've gone without one and still been seated. The staff is super friendly without being bothersome, just helpful and they always seem happy to be there and happy to see us again. Good salads, wonderful pasta choices, a couple of fish options, and my favorite is the scallop baked in the shell. And the other diners always look like interesting people. It's a bit out of the way so people intentionally choose to go there, like us, because it's such a great dining experience.
