Riva Crabhouse on Navy Pier Ratings and Reviews
The service and the seafood! We had a huge platter of seafood that included lobster, crab and shrimp prepared perfectly and served beautifully. It was fresh and tasted like we were at the coast. The service was great, it was a good way to celebrate our 22 years of happiness!
The food was a decent amount. ...service was awesome!
The only items I really liked were the clam chowder & drinks. Although the special included large portions of the lobster, shrimp & crab, the meat wasn’t as fresh as I’d like to see. My Dad was a fisherman & I grew up with “oh-so-fresh” seafood! 😊 It was rather leathery & tough. For the price, it doesn’t come close to the taste of Red Lobster. The side dishes needed to be flavored more. Perhaps the chef should consider sauteing the spinach in garlic for more flavor. I’d also like to see the double baked potato added as a side. I had the raw oysters for an appetizer but would have preferred to have the option of having them cooked.
I have stopped at the bar on several occasions & had their wings & clam chowder which are always great! ...little disappointed in the taste of their seafood.
Riva is THE place for a special occasion like our valentines dinner! Waiter Tim was superbly professional, friendly and helpful with our menu choices. GracIous to take several pictures of us, especially with pier skyline behind us. The seabass is what I came for and it delivered: succulent bites of fresh moist sea bass flavor without tons of salt or other “spices”, and seared just right crust! Another must-have is the jumbo crab cake with huge chunks of crab to make you smile after every bite. Even the Caesar salad was prepared perfectly as we requested easy dressing and again fresh equals delicious! Although we are on a budget, we’re saving for another trip back to Riva! By the way, please bring back the lobster corn bisque soup ASAP LOL!
We went for restaurant week. The soup was very salty and so were the entrees.
We had the fish, seafood pasta, and the chicken and they were so salty that we could not eat it.
I actually went two time thinking the first time might have been a bad day for the chef, but the exact same saltiness overpower the food.
Our group of 10 went to Chicago for a quick weekend getaway. We specifically picked Riva for the water views and were very happy they gave us a table right by the window. Our waiter was very accommodating and friendly and the food was delicious! We had a great time!
Nice wines. Sea bass and salmon were cooked perfectly! Prices are high because you are on navy pier with an amazing view of the city. ($14 for a very nice chardonnay with an amazing view seems fair) Use valet and you're getting a geat deal on parking (and super convenient)
The menu was very limited with maybe 5 entrees selections to choose. This makes it very limited to what can be ordered. Restaurant was convenient to the theater especially since most of the restaurant at navy pier are closed due to construction. I didn’t know the theater offered a discount coupon for dining at this restaurant until after we ate dinner and was at the theater.
As always, the food and service was outstanding. The staff is warm and welcoming. The view of the lake and the skyline is mesmerizing. It is quiet enough to enjoy the conversation at your table. We could not have asked for more--Bravo Riva's!!! You are so consistent!
Retuned in connection w attending a performance at Shakespeare. Waiter was very personable, and were looking forward to a leisurely 2 hours before showtime. The kitchen was evidently short staffed so the problems began.
As we finished our appetizers and salads, waiter said he had just put in entree order (?). Not long afterwards, server arrived, with one wrong entree. Sent them back. Waiter then delivered crab cakes, we ordered crab claws. Waiter also said he would comp the crab cakes due to the delay and confusion, so we said fine. This order of crab cakes were horrible, so we sent those back. Manager got involved, and initially offered another serving of crab cakes. When we indicated that we ordered claws, which the waiter disputed, manager offered the whip up an order of claws, as we still had time. While we were looking forward to claws at that point we didn’t want a full pound. Manager said he would only charge us half. The crab claws were very good, but do two claws make a pound?
When the bill came, they did only charge us half for the claws, nothing was comped as the waiter suggested, and the charge was $40 for a risotto which was available but not on the menu.
Conclusion, food was good as always, but this evening the service was horrible. Also make sure you ask the price for special items, as this experience left us with the taste that they would rather minimize losses on a bad night than simply moving on with their reputation in tact.
Maybe ten years ago, we had a large party at RL, and as the result of it being a new chefs first day, we had a similar disaster, and I believe they comped most if not all of the food. We have never forgotten, that as we are unlikely to forget this.
Always enjoy a solid meal with one of the best views in the city. Service attentive. Seafood is simply prepared and delicious. I have the burger and it was prepared as ordered. Gelato assortment is my favorite dessert . This is the best place to dine on Navy Pier.
We go to Riva often as subscribers to Shakespeare Theater. This time we went for brunch/lunch, but there were no "brunch" items on the menu - it was ll lunch or dinner with accompanying prices. We will probably return, but with hesitation. I ordered sauteed calamari. Had to send it back - inedible. Tasted like rubber bands. They were nice about taking it back and brought me a salad.
Best clam chowder I have ever had, and the calamari was good. Unfortunately I wasn’t as hungry so I didn’t get an entree, but those appetizers we’re delicious. The staff was friendly and attentive. We had a view. The bottle of Merlot we ordered was delicious. NYE party was so much fun, fireworks were the cherry on top!
Great service - nice ambiance - always eat there when going to Shakespeare - Always accommodate our schedule to make theatre. Excellent fish selections although if you like your fish just cooked tell them or it comes over cooked and a little too dry for my taste. This of course is personal preference. Fantastic views, plenty of parking or valet. Business casual - in other words no tank tops, or looking like you just rolled out bed.
We eat at RIVA several times a year because we attend Chicago Shakespeare Theater productions. Usually, the food is good, the service is excellent and the views are nothing short of amazing. This time, all we had were the views. The service was nonexistent. For example, after our food was served (we both had the mixed grill special), we never saw our waiter. If we had, we would have told him that the lobster was just plain awful — way over cooked, dry and tough. The crab legs were also over cooked but at least they were edible. In all fairness, both the shrimp and the filet were quite good, though I wish there had been more than just 2 shrimp. Finally, after we had declined dessert and asked for our check, we never saw our waiter again. We waited 15 minutes (not an exaggeration) and finally had to ask a manager for the check. We only have one question for you: What has happened to your restaurant?
We were excited to spend our 20th anniversary at Riva Crabhouse, followed by a performance at the Shakespeare Theater at Navy Pier, and even more thrilled when we found they have a prix fixe menu for theater goers. We noted in the reservation we were celebrating our 20th anniversary, since they asked for any notes. No one mentioned anything about it, which wasn't a huge deal. Our initial interaction with our server was fine, but the minute I inquired about the prix fixe menu, everything changed. She said it was only for theater goers and actually asked if we were going to theater and to show her our tickets. The various courses were brought before we were done with the other ones, she never asked how the food was or if we wanted more wine, and she brought the bill over along with the dessert course - so apparently we weren't going to order any after dinner coffee or tea. We had to flag someone repeatedly for water glass refills. The last straw was that we had a gift card to use for the dinner, and the sigh from her was followed by a "you will have to pay any difference between the bill and the gift card. Really? I had no idea that was how gift cards work - unbelievable. It was very clear that we were second class patrons that evening and that our business was not valued. The tip (which yes, we calculated on the full amount of the bill, not the amount the gift card didn't cover) reflected that lack of care - which probably reinforced her stereotypes about "cheap" theater goes. Very much NOT the experience we had in mind when we selected this for our milestone anniversary. BTW - food on the prix fixe menu was fine - not outstanding, but fresh and good quantity.
Food was excellent, and previous experiences of excellent food, decent service and location were the drawn for us to Riva's. However, the service by our waitress was very poor. She took very long to get drinks, did not pour beer from can into glass, was slow in taking food orders. Never came to the table when finished eating to suggest desserts, coffee, etc. I had to hail her for our bill. Busboys were the opposite, very attentive and very responsive.
