Riva Crabhouse on Navy Pier Ratings and Reviews
The restaurant paid attention to every detail for the special occasion of our 45th wedding anniversary-table with a dynamite view, carefully prepared entrees, attentive and well timed service and then recognized our anniversary without any prompting. THANK YOU.
Rivas has gone down hill. This is the second time I have been there and it hasn’t been good. The hostess was rude when we arrived. Someone who may have been the manager (was dressed in a suit) didn’t even make eye contact. The food is second rate. Not sure what has happened here because Rivas used to be excellent.
Great place for dinner before Chicago Shakespeare show. Rolls were delicious. Clam chowder was good but could delete the peppers as they dominated flavor. The filet was cooked perfectly--medium rare, as requested. Caesar salad was made up of romaine spears and adequately dressed. The Creme Brulee (sp) was delicious. Ambiance is very nice. We had a window overlooking the lake. Sweet! It is a bit expensive but overall experience was very good.
I don't go to Chicago often and wanted to enjoy a special evening celebrating my birthday. Which I mentioned when I made the reservations. Our waitress was courteous until she returned to our table the 2nd time to ask if we had decided, and we hadn't. Once she realized we were not in a hurry it was nearly impossible to get her attention for something as simple as a drink refill. She was basically rude and irritable to us. Yet she was hyper-attentive to the table of 8 sitting behind us. I expected exceptional service in a restaurant of this caliber. I did not expect to be ignored through most of my dinner.
The Calamari was exceptional.
My Seafood Gumbo was served almost cold (probably because our waitress was ignoring us).
Pepper was not offered with the salad (again inattentive waitress).
The Crab Cakes are served with an artistic flair, but the portions are small.
This experience was definitely not worth the money we paid.
Went last year loved it came back this year and it was horrible service was the worst told one thing about food came out something else . We asked for drinks refills server said ok we would watch him go clean off a table then go get our drinks didn’t tell us about any specials didn’t tell us we had to ask not impressed this time at all .
Beautiful view of the lake from our window side table. Came here to celebrate my son's graduating as a new CPD.
Service is EXCELLENT, very polite and attentive staff.
However as good as the food was, I did not consider it worth the hefty price attached to it.
Portions are NOT generous.
Riva always amazes me on their quick service and fresh seafood selections that are excellently prepared. When going to The Shakespeare Theatre on Navy Pier, this is always our pre-theatre stop. (Shakespeare theatre patrons get a dining discount!) A finely crafted cocktail (wonderful martinis) and great selection of wine is good for starters! The menu has a wide variety of options, including chilled seafood platters with oysters, crab claws and shrimp. The fresh fish specials are cooked to order, usually with a creative accompanying melange of fresh vegetables and a starch. You can't go wrong with the Alaskan Halibut or Jumbo Shrimp with mini gnocchi. The Ahi Tuna with sesame is cooked to your preference. Juicy mussels are served with your choice of sauce. I never have room for dessert since the meal portion is always filling – but I am always contented.
Enjoyed the great food with excellent service. Blanca was very attentive to our needs and made special note that we had a garlic and gluten allergy in our group. If you're with out of town guests, Riva has a beautiful view of the city. Valet your car and enjoy a great night. This was my second business meal at Riva in two months. My next visit will be with a date.
Once we were seated, we had a wonderful evening with friends from Montreal. The check-in process seemed rather aloof, and while we were happy to wait for our table, we felt a bit like orphans. Our food was delicious and the service was very attentive. I was a bit disappointed that we were seated in a smaller dining room, rather than the main space (which has more ambience and windows) although it was easier to carry on a conversation. I had specifically asked that we have a window table when I booked on Open Table.
I have eaten at a number of restaurants that focus on seafood. There are many very good options so the competition for the diner's dollar is intense. Even so, I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at Riva. Good selection of entrees covering all the bases for a seafood establishment. Food was well-prepared, properly seasoned and nicely presented. Even though I was there on a busy evening, service was attentive.
I have eaten at Rivas for many years but my last lunch may be the final. I ordered the mussels - they may have been fresh but they tasted as if they’d been dug from a septic field - their digestive track had triple the sludge. Sauce was tasteless, no wine or butter was detected. The crab cake was almost tasteless. Just don’t understand.
