Have thoroughly enjoyed Dover Sole 5-6 times a year at this restaurant for many many years. Dover Sole was of very poor quality tonight and was sent back both for our table and the adjacent table. Same problem with one of two orders of Dover Sole three weeks ago. Will not be returning.
Shared the wedge salad. My wife had the crab cakes and I had the Dover Sole. All were excellent. Will return.
Lovely location and so convenient for dinner before Shakespeare performances. Grilled seafood here is my go-to, but don’t neglect the very good steak options as well.
Even tho we showed up late they sat us quickly and made sure we made our way to the play on time.
Wonderful seafood in a very appealing venue. We went recently before a performance at the Shakespeare theater and had w very, very good meal. My wife and I each had a fish dish, and the Atlantic Swordfish dish I had was better than any fish I had in a recent trip to France. Perfectly cooked and combined with a terrific combination of clams, crab and squid. My wife's grilled Atlantic Char was also perfectly prepared. Great views, excellent service and a wonderful location for the theater.
Always a memorable experience with a professional waite staff, the Chilean Sea Bass is wonderful and all this with a magnificent view across the water to the Chicago Skyline.
I had the seafood casserole which was delicious and my husband loved the grilled swordfish. Excellent food, good value, and attentive service.
We had the Chicago shakes prix fixe which I felt was a very reasonable deal. Thank you for making a reasonably priced meal available so people could enjoy a night out!
My crabcake was outstanding as was dessert. Unfortunately, my salmon was burnt. I was quite disappointed with that. But our server was great and the ambience is fantastic
I am sorry to have to write a somewhat negative review but our experience at Riva was very disappointing. Our server had absolutely no interest in working with two of the guests who asked for gluten free/sensitive options. Instead of saying he will check with the chef about certain menu items, he simply said I'm pretty sure it has gluten in it and you should stick with a piece of grilled fish and the beans. When pressed, he did say he would check with the chef. After advising us that one of the side dishes (risotto - which typically does not) on the specials menu contained gluten, he was unwilling to substitute it with another side which made the entire entree unavailable.
I have been to Riva many times since it has opened and am sorry to have such negative feedback on the restaurant. But this time, it was not in any way accommodating to dietary restrictions - or perhaps it was just our waiter.
It was a busy night, so we did not get a coveted table near the window we had asked for, but the food was excellent and the service wonderful. We had a good time.
Perfect place to dine before our show at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. A bit pricey, but excellent food and service.
Loved Riva. We haven’t eaten there in ages but will hopefully return again soon. We wanted to have a glass of wine leisurely beforehand but the service in the upper bar area was so slow. Next time, we’ll just show up at our reservation time. View was great, oyster appetizer and salmon were delicious.
Riva is a convenient choice for dinner before a show at the Shakespeare Theatre and is the only halfway decent restaurant on Navy Pier. The setting on the lake is beautiful. Service was professional and somewhat old school. The crab cake appetizer was very good as was the creme brûlée for dessert. The entree was a bit disappointing; the salmon was very fresh and perfectly cooked, but really bland- no seasoning or sauce of any kind. The prices are quite high even with a theater discount but you’re paying for the location.
The waiter got the orders wrong. The Louis salads are awful. Teensy shrimps. Tasteless salad dressing. And each time we come, the cost of that salad goes up. The bread is not warm and it is dry. My group is going to try a new place when we go to Shakespeare again
We ate with friends for lunch before a Shakespeare Theater performance. Riva is always a special place to experience. However, this time my Chicken Caesar Salad was just OK rather than special. In addition, we had a very slow waiter, which is unusual for Riva. I was standing at my table waiting for the waiter to return my credit card so I could catchup with the rest of our party and get to the performance on time. Too bad.
Dinner was excellent. We enjoy our visits with our waitress, Michelle. One of a kind! We miss Gino!!
Our server was outstanding. the food was great. A little noisy.
Another good pre-Shakespeare experience at Riva. I had the swordfish, the wife the salmon pre-fixe. Both fine.
Great lunch-time salads. Best view in town. A very pleasant pre-theatre dining experience.
Great food and atmosphere
Absolutely wonderful service
As my mom was grabbing my wristlet from the empty seat at our table she encountered a huge ugly grey spider the size of a quarter that was climbing up the side of the tablecloth toward the top of the table. She has an extreme phobia of spiders and jumped out of her chair until I could get around to that side of the table and use my napkin to kill it. A large commotion was made by her reaction and not a single server came by to see if everything was ok. So I signed the bill and had to flag over our server Peggy. I let her know what happened and showed her the smashed spider in my napkin. She provided an insincere apology and took he napkin. All the while my mom was unable to return to her seat and was forced to wait near the host stand until I could pay the bill. It was a really unfortunate ending to her birthday celebration dinner.
Riva is really the only choice for what might come close to a fine dining restaurant -- it's not quite there, but it's certainly better than any of the other choices available on Navy Pier. The menu could use a revamping and at times service is a bit rough around the edges, but it is reliable and makes for stress-free dining before Chicago Shakespeare Theatre.
Another great dinner at Riva after the theater....this has become my go-to place when I am at Navy Pier to see a Chicago Shakespeare production. Reliable quality, broad menu, great cocktail bar and professional wait staff....and the view is fantastic!
Excellent service. Our server was attentive, friendly and took time to answer my questions.
Great service very accommodating to our theater schedule
My food (Mahi Mahi) was quite bland
Best crabcakes in town, and waitstaff who appreciate you have a 7:30 curtain time to make at the Shakespeare Theater!
We brought friends from Scottsdale Arizona to enjoy the restaurant, views and a Shakespeare play. All were great. The food ,service, quality were outstanding. A special place that we go to often.
Michelle was absolutely outstanding! She had great suggestions and was extremely helpful throughout the meal and securing a cab afterwards! This was our first trip to Chicago and our meal at Riva’s made it even more memorable!!
Our waitress, Michelle, was terrific. The food was wonderful. Can't wait to return. Only one negative...the young hostesses who greet you when you arrive were bored and unenthusiastic, to the point of being rude. They could use a pep talk.
The food was great and we were at a table by the window which gave us a great view of the water.
We went to celebrate a birthday and we love the high quality seafood, great service and you can’t beat the view. I would recommend the lobster roll and key lime pie with coconut ice cream.
The view from our table was breathtaking! The service was on point & the good delicious.
Extraordinary service. The Maine lobster was the best i have ever eaten. It was so pleasant to dine while looking out at the lake. If it's seafood you want, couldn't possibly find anything better.
Sandra was our server and she was delightful, efficient and pleasant. We had 3petite filets which were 3 requested temperatures and were all delicious. Lobster mac was the perfect starch and a bottle of Faust cab - scrumptious! Could not have been better unless it had been free!
We enjoyed a spectacular view of the lakefront on a beautiful late summer evening. We arrived at 5:30 pm and left at 7:15 pm. We had dinner and dessert. The food was delicious and arrived quickly. We were a bit concerned at the end of the meal when we couldn’t get the attention of our waiter to order dessert. It all worked out and we made our 7:30 pm show at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre.
We have been to Riva many times over the years and we ‘re convinced this restaurant has improved over the years. The dining room overlooking Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline is lovely. I had a half dozen oysters from Washington state - briny perfection. My husband’s Caprese was quite good with high quality mozzarella and a touch of basil pesto. His Grilled Halibut was fresh and perfectly cooked. The only disappointment was my scallop fettuccine. It was prepared with too much butter, but the flavor was good. The espresso and cappuccino were excellent. Desserts were good, too. Since we were attending Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, this was a very convenient dining choice.
A beautiful night to go with our beautiful view
Dinner was amazing as always
Services was wonderful
Kitchen has become inconsistent. Last two times, the wait staff who are excellent have had to apologize for poorly prepared meal, this time a severely under cooked medium rare filet.
The manager all too easily comped the entree, like they were used to it.
We would rather have had a properly prepared meal.
