About Ristorante Milano
The flavors of Milano's food and the rhythm of the dining room are reminiscent of trattorias in Italy's cities, according to Gourmet Magazine. It is a charming, intimate restaurant with an Italian staff, top quality ingredients, homemade pastas, exceptional veal, polenta, risotto, and fresh seafood delivered daily, served in warm surroundings. Known as the "hidden jewel of Russian Hill" The San Francisco Chronicle calls Milano "one of the most consistent restaurants in the city".

Ristorante Milano Ratings and Reviews
We arrived on time for a 7 pm reservation to a very crowded restaurant but were shown immediately to our table at the elevated rear of the restaurant. The space for the three of us was quite tight and uncomfortable, so that the rear ends of servers and diners were in our faces as they moved into and out of our area. The noise level was high. Because of the crowd, our service was erratic and out of sync, although the waitress was pleasant enough. The busboy kept stopping by, eager to clear plates, which is very annoying. And the waitress knew nothing about the special wine being promoted, and actually offered incorrect information about it. The food was just okay, not prepared and plated with the kind of care one would expect, especially at the prices one pays to dine here.
We have eaten at Milano several times before and encountered few problems and a wonderful meal. But this evening the restaurant was over-booked and everything about it was disappointing - food, service, atmosphere. The management/owner should be more careful in taking on more than his small operation can handle.
This is one of our favorite SF Neighborhood restaurants. We frequently order the fish special of the evening which is always a good choice, but the Salmon this past Saturday was exceptionally good. The atmosphere is low key and friendly. Parking in the area is difficult and is the only draw back.
The only reason I didn't give this an overall 5 star review, is because mid-way through my AMAZING meal, I found a long hair in my fettuccine. Very unfortunate for me because the meal was great! I chose to not say anything to the staff, though I wish I had. Finding hair in a dish is very disgusting, but mistakes happen, and I get it. I would go back to the restaurant for another shot, but if it were to happen again, then 2 strikes would be too many for me.
Though one of the smaller Italian restaurants, Milano has been known for years to native San Franciscans for consistently excellent food and service. Nightly specials like Ribbolita, and a menu featuring home made pasta make Milano a welcome alternative to the plethora of high price "Italian" mega-restaurants in the city..
Small neighborhood Russian Hill, charmer with authentic northern Italian cuisine, fresh pasta and salads, near Hyde St. cable car line. Must try calamari salad, gnocchi, saltimboca, pasta dishes, fresh fish. Great tirimasu, but do sample home made Italian gelato. Nice Italian wine list with good help from waiter in food pairing-- or try an Italian beer! We go pre pre theatre, concerts, but go early, and make reservation, as small place fills up rapidly.
I like small upscale northern Italian restaurants with ambiance. I picked Milano online before we went to San Francisco for our anniversary because it did not seem to be overpriced, had good reviews, an attractive interior, and was in nice locale. I requested a quiet table because I am a bit hard of hearing and wanted a romantic dinner with my wife. When we arrived they indeed gave me a great table tucked away in a quiet corner as I had asked. Even though busy, they had their system of serving down to an art form, one waiter, one server, one bus boy for a capacity of about 30. The service was personable and prompt. Never felt rushed but never waited. I was impressed. The food was fresh, very good, and reasonably priced. The only reason I would not say the food was excellent is due to my experience of eating in famous high end Italian restaurants on the level of Cipriani. Yes, without a doubt I was very pleased overall and if I every get back to San Francisco in the future will go out of my way to try and dine there again.
This is a local gem in nob hill that could easily get overlooked, given it's in the middle of a block on Pacific between Hyde and Larkin. But most who dine here seem to know about it and are loyal customers. The menu is full of authentic and flavorful Italian dishes built on fresh ingredients. The service is attentive without being irritating. I would only recommend that they add just one more spoonful to each dish since they sometimes can feel like a very light first course. Unless you're eating multiple dishes, you might find yourself a bit hungry with only one main dish. The wine list is excellent with a broad range of local and Italian wines to choose from, at all price points.
Very nice atmosphere. The waiters were incredibly nice and friendly. Excellent staff. The food was really good, seemed very authentic.
The only problem was that they do not have air conditioning. 99% of the time this is not a problem. But I went on a night that had a heatwave over SF. It was so hot, that they wouldn't turn the grill because the cooks would be too hot in the kitchen. I mostly felt bad for the staff who were stuck there all night, but I also now know not to go there on a hot day.
