There aren't a ton of compelling reasons to go downtown for dinner these days, but Rioja is still one of them.
Rioja used to be one of our favorites. Food and service were not of the quality we had come to expect. Waiters let their feelings be known about tables loud enough for other eaters to hear. It was very unprofessional. We were really disappointed.
A bit disappointing this time--the timing of food and drink was off. We waited a long time for our wine, then watched the ice cream part of our dessert melt while we waited for our coffee.
Also, we were told that the picnic appetizer would take too long to make given our restriction to be done within an hour. This seemed weird as we have had the picnic before and it shouldn't be something that requires a lot of prep time.
We've loved Rioja and will return at some point, but probably time to try some other restaurants in the area.
Our third time here and it did not disappoint. Our dinner was great. Food was amazing as usual.
Excellent service as always and inventive specials
The second visit was for brunch. I had the Hangover Cure, which consists of pork belly, egg, avocado, etc. My description cannot do it justice. It was tremendous and bursting with flavor. Although the portions aren't large; it was probably enough to fill me up, especially with the bread provided. The craft cocktails are killer; although they are priced too high. The staff is knowledgeable, capable, and extremely courteous. It is a bit pricey for the amounts received, both food and drink; however, I love this restaurant overall. I even bought the cookbook from the restaurant. I will definitely return, if possible.
Rioja never disappoints. We love the artichoke tortellini and the Rioja ‘picnic’ was excellent.
Every trip to Rioja is a true joy. The staff is uniformly skilled, efficient, professional, and happy. The food is always a wonderful blend of fresh, creative combinations that make the palate dance. The service team is attentive, swift, and wastes zero motion while enhancing the dining experience, leaving patrons to enjoy the privacy of quiet conversation with minimal disruption. There are many reasons Rioja remains one of Denver's finest dining experiences and every one of them is well earned.
We had a great business meal at Rioja. The place is designed for a refine dining experience. The food is very good and service was great.
Staff was knowledgeable and attentive. Food choices were varied and excellent. Easy walk or ride on the Mall bus from Union Station.
Best dining experience in Denver!
Although the restaurant is a bit pricy, it is well worth it. The food is delicious and creative. Best me al we have enjoyed in a long time. The ham wrapped octopus was beyond good and the pasta dish was phenomenal. Just an inside hint. You have got to try the fig filled beignets. You will instantly have a smile on your face. Cannot wait to return.
Rioja never disappoints! This restaurant is my consistent go-to for celebrations, dates, or if I need to put a smile on my face. I wish I caught our servers name- she has taken care of me the last 2 times I’ve had brunch here and she radiates friendly knowledge, professionalism, and hospitality. Food was also on point, as always! There are so many places to dine in Denver these days, but I’ll never stop coming to Rioja. Thank you!!
We always loved Rioja but had not been in a few years because of the noise level. I saw they had mitigated the noise in a renovation so we decided to go back. It was great as before but the noise level is so much better! Thank you for making the effort to make our dining experience so enjoyable!!
Ambiance was fantastic, service was exceptional. Food desciptions on the menu sounded wonderful, very inspired, but the actual dishes didn't measure up. There were four of us, we all ordered something different, and we were all disappointed. The food was either bland, had too many ingredients that didn't really go together, or was just not properly cooked. Plate presentations were beautiful - too bad the food didn't deliver on the promise. Quite a bit overpriced, especially for the quality. But I loved the place itself and would definitely go there for drinks. Staff is very friendly and helpful.
Service was excellent. Attentive and kind. Food was delicious.
The service was GREAT!
The food was AMAZING!
The experience couldn’t have been better!
WE LOVE THIS PLACE!!
Rioja was my first choice for a business deal celebration for 10 people. It did not disappoint. The wine was fantastic, food was exceptional, they accommodated a client with some very specific food allergies. We did have a couple of delays getting drinks, but they were slammed the entire time we were there so it was understandable.
We made reservations for our 10 year anniversary based on a recommendation and are so glad we did. The food and service was absolutely amazing.
As usual, food and service excellent. Entire staff incredibly friendly. We would dine here more often if getting downtown was not so difficult during rush hour. But love this place and have for years - consistently great!
Tasty food! A nice ~nice~ dinner place for special occasions or to treat yourself to things you can't/wouldn't cook at home.
We have dined at Rioja on 4 different visits to Denver and it has never disappointed. We have recommended it to our friends when they have visited also and they raved about it! Keep up the great food combinations and high service standards. The experience makes me yearn to go back! Thanks.
Definitely had great first experience at Rioja! Drinks were nice, food was extremely good, and of course dessert was amazing. Service was 10/10 as well!
We have been long time patrons of Rioja. The food is as outstanding as always, but the service suffered terribly today.
Our waiter, admittedly new, did not understand basic culinary terms like “vegetarian”, did not know the menu and was unbelievably inefficient.
One of the servers knocked over my husbands drink and didnt apologize. She said, “oh thats ok”. ????
We are appalled with today’s experience...and hope that the next time we try, the service improves.
Nice room. Noise ok. Menu interesting and enough to appeal to all. Dishes tasty. Wines of good value available.
I've been twice in the last two years and just don't get the hype. My wife and I have ordered multiple things from there (pasta, fish, chicken, dessert) and it's just "okay," not spectacular like others say. What we've found is that things are over-seasoned or over-salted each time.
Restaurant itself is beautiful, great location, great wine list and the service is outstanding (if a little slow).
We've been to Rioja many times, so our expectations were high. However, we were rushed from the beginning, the busser kept slamming into my chair as he was cleaning our table (even before we were finished), and the food came out tepid and very salty. We will give it a chance again, because we've had very good experiences in the past. The server was fantastic. But this one was a miss, and with an average entree price of $38, that is very unfortunate.
Amazing time! Best service and food, my girlfriend and I were celebrating our 1 year anniversary. Our waiters were amazing and gave us free drinks, deserts and special attention
The food was wonderful and they have a nice selection of wines by the glass. However, the restaurant was too warm and thus the red wines by the glass were too warm. Cellared red wines were fine, but the ones kept behind the bar were not. Disappointing in such a nice restaurant with such a nice wine list.
Rijoha is probably the best restaurant in Denver. . Our first impression was it the comfort of the chairs and the seating that provided privacy. Tables are large and set up so that you are not eating on top of other people. The noise level is moderate. This seems to be a rarity in today's restaurants. The meal begins with the offering of a very creative basket of breads. The next courses consisted of a very inexpensive house arugula salad with nuts and cheese and a beet salad with three kinds of beats. Our main dishes consisted of Marlin special prepared sushi style except for a very light tempura batter. There were three condiments on the plate to flavor the fish. Our other entree was a medium rare sliced lamb served over a pomegranate risotto. Both entrees were creative and delicious. The service is attentive without being intrusive. Total cost for the evening was not that much more than Racines and far less than other quality restaurants.
The food was great and the service was very timely and helpful. We appreciated being left to enjoy our time and meal. The tables are a bit crowded and it can be noisy, as it was the night we were there. I faced the glass wine rack that separated the two rooms and kept getting distracted by both the movement on the other side of the glass and the reflection off the glass of servers moving back and forth behind me. I think the wall seating would have been less distracting. Nevertheless, the meal and place are great; I certainly recommend them.
Excellent atmosphere, service, and food! The staff was extremely friendly and the the food was delicious!
The signature pasta dish with artichokes was disappointing as the pasta was too thick. The duck pizza was amazing, as were the scallops with carrots and the picnic starter. Service was slow and not very friendly. We were stuck in the room with the pizza oven when there were tables available on the bar side and were on our own for most of the evening, so not very atmospheric. Nice restaurant, good food, service spoiled it
Not our first visit but as always, met or exceeded all expectations.
Yum! Everything was delicious and perfect. Can't wait to go again.
Lamb was incredible as was cannoli dessert- we had tasting menu.
I know restaurants need to serve as many as possible - seats are important. I do not return to restaurants where I must sit 3 feet from my husband and he must strain to hear me talk.
They have many 2 tops, but I think it would be better served for groups!
everything was great
Food excellent, service poor to start-improved over the course of the experience. Don’t particularly enjoy being seated and then waiting 20 min for server to return asking if we wanted a cocktail. No explanation re dinners/menu idiosyncrasies.
