There aren't a ton of compelling reasons to go downtown for dinner these days, but Rioja is still one of them.
The staff was wonderful. I was dining alone as I travel for work. The hostess was so very sweet and considerate and made sure I was comfortable and even offered me a seat at the chef’s counter. The gentlemen who served bread and poured water, cleared dishes could not have been any nicer. In fact he made it his job to make sure I wasn’t lonely and was well taken care of. He asked my name and I asked his, however sadly I can’t remember it. The server was good too. The food is always exceptional and the presentation possibly the best of anywhere I have eaten. The flavors were all paired amazingly well. I will continue to dine here when I visit Denver.
Food was spectacular, service was lacking at best.
Phenomenal food, and the service was fantastic. Would definitely recommend the Chicken.
Food was exceptional. Cocktail was the bomb!
Anniversary dinner... the staff was excellently!
The Mimorette (sp?) cheese appetizer was a true taste delight - cheese, apricot, nuts w a unique wild rice cake topped with fresh herbs. The lamb entree was perfectly prepared and the ricotta with pomegranate seeds was very tasty. Also, the entree of artichoke tortellini en brodo had a light, delicate flavor which was accented excellently with white truffle slices. The chocolate peanut butter torte is beautifully presented in a very novel manner and could easily serve for two. The lemon tart was delicious in itself, and we felt that the accompanying ice cream actually detracted from the rich, tart lemon flavor. We will definitely come back!
The food was phenomenal. The artichoke tortelloni and beignets were amazing. Would definitely return. Only complaint was that the restaurant was very warm on St. Patricks Day for dinner. It may have been that it was such a warm day.
We had a wonderful meal here St. Patrick’s night. The restaurant was so busy, but we felt like we were the only ones there. Service was fantastic and every course was better than the last. This restaurant is not a vegetarian restaurant, but I was able to make my meal one of the best vegetarian meals I’ve ever had with no tofu in sight, thank goodness. The meat eaters in our group were equally as pleased. We will be back!
Oyster soup was cold. Gnocchi was burned and bitter. Server brought out different dish which was also cold to replace burned gnocchi. Overall service was poor. Dinner took over 2 hours. After I finished glass of wine I was not offered another glass. I need to ask server for more wine and to offer us more bread while we waited for 45 min between appetizer and entree. I've been to Rioja a lot of times and this was by far an outlier experience. I think of Rioja as a star of the Denver dinning scene and hope this is was a bad night.
It is very, very noisy and hard to hear across the table. The chairs are terrible as the back has no support and when you lean back it just flops. It's more like sitting on a stool than a chair. The food was mediocre and very over priced. The vegetarian meal was mushy and not very flavorful, the pasta was chewy and underseasoned.
Excellent food, creative drinks, and perfectly timed service made this a great place to done!
One of the best places to go before or after a performance.
Really appreciate having half glass options on all of the by the glass options. Delicious and one of the best tortalloni dishes I’ve had. Was sent an additional starter, which is always a nice touch. Service was consistent but not much in the way of going over the menu at the start. Will be back!
Food continues to be amazing. We love sitting at the chef’s table and get insights into the food and the though that goes behind it.
Service is the best! Food amazing! Can't go wrong here. You will be treated like royalty. All menu items brought out with a thorough explanation and every member of staff friendly and accommodating. Add to that the upscale food and decor and it's a complete win! Favorite restaurant in Denver!
My friend and I went to Rioja before going to the theater. We had an absolutely wonderful meal. The free starter was a very nice touch and the server who brought the bread didn't blink an eye when I wanted a piece of every type! I ordered a salad to start and then had the artichoke tortellini. It was stupendous. The server came by again with the lavender bread just because "it went beautifully with the artichoke broth". The staff is very attentive and gave us a head's up about the time that it would take to get through security.
My only comment for Rioja is to PLEASE bring back the tuna/apple appetizer. It is dreamy and something I'm still craving many years later!
Always a great experience! Always amazing food.
Celebrated my birthday at Rioja and food and service was fantastic. Would highly recommend!!
I've been a fan of Rioja for many years; it has always been at the top of my favorite restaurants in Denver. That being said, my dinner the other evening was a bit disappointing. We began with the duck confit pizza, which was outstanding. My friend had the scallops (which were very good), and I had the salmon. The salmon with the trout eggs itself was actually very good, but the vegetables that came with it really didn't go with the protein...they were just the wrong flavor profile. The chocolate dessert that we had was outstanding. I will definitely return, but I would not order the salmon again unless changes were made.
Delicious meal -- Rioja never disappoints! Superb service -- friendly and attentive, going so far as to find me a pair of reading glasses when I realized I had left mine at home. Delighful tuna poke amuse bouche to start things off, followed by delicious duck flatbread pizza as a shared starter. Both pasta dishes -- the classic artichoke tortelloni as well as the gnocchi special -- were superb -- full of flavor, light as air, and perfectly al dente. I'm glad we saved room for dessert -- the Rocky Road special and the lemon tart were absolutely delicious.
Over rated and the food is too expensive. I wouldn’t mind paying the price but the food is too salty, we didn’t eat anything we liked. Wouldn’t go back.
Food was amazing as usual. Server noticed we were dressed up and asked us if we were going to the theatre (Hamilton rocked!!!), and what our timeframe looked like. Very attentive.
Chef Jen does not disappoint. Great meal before heading to the theater.
Food and service were exceptional as always. Goat cheese beignets are a must!
Every time we visit Denver, we go to Rioja for a lamb burger lunch. Perfect lunch, and if a sunny day, nice to people watch on Larimar. The lunch, always follows a dinner at Rioja.
Great food, great service and always a pleasure to be there.
Loved dining here! Great food, service, and ambiance. Awesome place for a date!
Our favorite restaurant in Denver for dinner. Food and service are always excellent, and this dinner is always followed by a lunch there the following day.
Rioja had a Ahi tuna special this time, which was the most unusual and the best preparation of tuna I had ever had. The tuna was served with a coconut coulis and wasabi, and strange as it sounds, it was amazing.
Another nice thing about Rioja was that they offer half bottles of wine. I don’t understand why more restaurants don’t do this
Brunch was amazing! I was skeptical but the wake up call cocktail was delicious. I had the Colorado lamb burger and my wife the Benedict. Both out of this world!
Most of the food was very good. The lamb was not the best and occasionally I felt the quality did not match the price.
Delicious. Went for my wife's birthday. We've been 3 times and it never disappoints. Great service, friendly, and well run.
We return to Rioja year after year for the amazing food and dining experience. This year, we were most taken by the kindness and professionalism our server, Rory. He definitely made a predictably wonderful dining experience even better.
Everything was exceptional! Fantastic food and wonderful service. Portions were perfect - filling, yet not too heavy. Atmosphere was bustling and warm.
I was somewhat disappointed in our pasta entrees as they were very salty and the artichoke tortellini was virtually flavorless. The appetizers were good and the dessert splendid. The bread tray is outstanding. The place has a wide array of seating choices, which is nice, and the noise level manageable. All in all pleasurable but not the best meal I’ve had in Denver.
Outstanding food and impeccable service. The artichoke torteloni and the lamb entree were particularly noteworthy. Great wines, none of which I was familiar with since they were all Mediterranean. The server was very knowledgeable and made great recommendations. Was slightly noisier than I expected but not bad, we could hear our dinner companions. It’s a popular place.
Wonderful! Food, service, ambiance all met are expectations while visiting Denver!
Rioja is always amazing! We were here for date night before seeing Hamilton. They made sure we were out by the time we wanted to leave for the show and timed everything perfectly. We asked for a wine recommendation, and our server was spot on! The food is always delicious as well.
We were given a gift certificate and used it for my husbands 74th birthday. We enjoyed watching the groups of young people all eating, drinking, chatting and overall happy and having fun. It was noisy but we were able to talk and to hear the server.
We have been here before and liked it then also. We also like Bistro VenDome. Denver is fortunate to have Ms. Jasinski (sp) and her many talents. We've lived in Denver a long time and like supporting restaurants that have been in Denver a longer time than most.
Came before a show. Waiter was knowledgeable and friendly. Plenty of time and everything was delicious
Great service and amazing food
We had another wonderful dinner at Rioja before going to see Hamilton. Shared a beet salad, then lamb and beouff. Excellent choice of wines. Attentive service. Attractive dining rooms. Highly recommended!
