Rio City Café - Sacramento
Rio City Cafe is situated in beautiful historic Old Sacramento, overlooking some of the most prominent landmarks in Sacramento. The Sacramento River runs by our spacious outdoor patio, with spectacular views of the historic Tower Bridge and the Ziggurat (pyramid) building.
Rio City Cafe opened its doors in May of 1994. We display a comfortably casual setting, with indoor and outdoor seating. We can accommodate large parties and banquets, as well as private parties in our banquet room for special occasions. Or just simply enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine and the view in the outdoor cocktail area. During the colder months, enjoy the view from inside near our cozy fireplace.
Lovely location right on the river in Old Town, of course. It was a very hectic St. Patrick's Day weekend with Jimmy Buffett in town, so it took a while for our waiter to come take our order, but the clam chowder and shrimp & crab Louie were tasty, and others in our party enjoyed their biscuit & gravy and turkey sandwich. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best place to eat in Old Town, hands down.
Nice place with fairly good menu; service adequate
Our server, Whitney, was very good. However, it took nearly an hour for our meals to arrive after we ordered. And, the four meals didn’t come out at the same time. Two in our party ordered hot meals and two ordered salads. The hot meals were served only warm and came out first. The salads arrived 5-10 minutes later and only after Whitney went looking for them.
Our server was nice but we constantly had to remind him of items that were needed to enjoy our meal along with the timing which our party was only 1 of 3 out on the covered patio therefore we weren't sure why it took as long as it did to receive our order along wuth the service items... I'll go back to give the restaurant another shot as I did enjoy the Mahi tacos...perhaps it was the server who was having an off day
Food was cold but also over cooked. Would not go back.
The food was fabulous and I love that they have a fireplace. Our waiter was very attentive. This is my favorite go to spot for brunch. They also validate.
Everyone was very friendly!! Loved the food, great as always. One of my favorite places in sac to eat :)
Celebrating friends new job!
Yes for the food. Server didn't offer cocktail - had to ask. Server didn't offer specials - had to ask. Server didn't indicate that they were out of one of the desserts when offering dessert menu. It was early 7 PM and very few in restaurant. At least the food was as I've always remembered.
Just a nice evening along the river in Old Sacramento
Wasn’t busy. Staff was very pleasant. Very nice. Disappointed in house salad. Have had excellent salads at this restaurant before. Clam chowder not hot. Think u should have a fresh seasonal fish on menu.
Service was good but it was the two of us and there should be some way to order a half of the cheese bread.
Visited Rio City prior to a concert at Golden 1 Center. The service was spot on, the food was excellent and the Cafe had a very pleasant vibe. My almond crusted Mahi Mahi was superbly prepared & delicious, and my wife's lobster ravioli was exceptional. Overall a fine experience, just what we wanted on our way to the concert!
It was a windiy, rainy and chilly evening. We enjoyed warm, home-style comfort food and a seat by the fire place. Staff was attentive. Food was yummy.
Great food and service
Rio City is my favorite place in Downtown Sacramento! I love the food, staff, views and owners!
I think it is a pleasant cafe restaurant in Old Town Sacramento that is affordable yet premium in cuisine and service.
What a find. After all these years of frequenting Sacramento, this was the first.
I am very impressed. Overall, I am very satisfied and definitely coming back.
What a ambience. It is hard to beat this location. Restaurant’s layout is very inviting and cozy. I saw countless awards displayed by the wall. I could tell this restaurant takes a pride in its excellence and serving the community and visitors, and well-managed.
Very relaxing lunch out on the patio on a sunny winter afternoon. All 5 in our party ordered different items. Very happy our 2 Celiacs found gluten free options clearly marked on the menus. Service was generally good. One miss was seating us at table for 4 but not giving silverware to our 5th adult, seated at the end of the table (he finally helped himself to a place setting from a vacant table). Jambalaya was hearty, steak salad delight to look at and eat, my husband got wedge salad and his custom requested burger patty (menu only offered shrimp or chicken side), I got my hearty crab/shrimp Cobb salad BUT had to request and wait for lemon to go with. The only dissapoinwas clam chowder in a bowl my son got as the bread was very very dry so, despite the chowder being good, he couldn’t eat the bread bowl and left hungry!
Absolutely delicious. Courteous staff.
Had a great Filet steak dinner and asparagus with a Beautiful lady, then off to great show at Laughs Unlimited.
I confirmed my reservation on the web site the day of. The menu was displayed and I picked out two options that appealed to me. When we arrived, neither option was available. For the same price, the option I chose seemed smaller, using "bistro" in its description.
For reservations on valentine's day, I was disappointed with the selection of music. It was no more romantic than a cafeteria during the work week.
In general, my expectations were not met. For the money, I would have expected more from Rio City Cafe.
I always enjoy Rio City Cafe. The food and service is always great. The huevos ranchero is excellent. However $60.00 for brunch for two is a little pricey.
We went here years ago on a date and the food was great, it was some what quiet noise level, nice lighting. Just a great atmosphere and worth spending $100+ on our bill. That's why we made reservations years later for our anniversary. It is NOT the same. My plates and silverware were dirty. The food was really greasy. Our entry lacked flavor while or appetizer was am over kill of vinegar that left a bad taste. We set our reservation with special request to be seated inside since it was raining and cold. Yet they seated us on the porch. I mentioned it was a special occasion also and there was no interest or mention by the host or server. It sucks because we really liked this place 2 or 3 years ago and chose them over the melting pot. We definitely regretted it as soon as we tasted the app. We could've gone next door to Joe's Crab Shack for a more tasteful, romantic, and quiet experience. Which says alot. Wont be going back spent about $100 for 2 people. Not ordering much but the bread, 2 "gourmet burgers", and 2 drinks. Wouldn't recommend.
We did enjoy our dinner in celebration of a birthday. Our server was outstanding.
We enjoyed and would be back. The drinks were great. Would have liked to have it warmer in the outside section though. It was a windy and rainy day.
The staff at Rio City Cafe are amazing. I'm not quick to write a review but have to support this business.
Whitney, our server, was so in tune with our needs and went above and beyond to make a great evening. I come from a background in fine dining and all of the key points were there in a more friendly atmosphere. Ross the manager was amazing as well and I would encourage anyone to come to this fine eatery! Great food, cooked perfectly and a view like no other in Sac. They are privately owned and it shows in their personal approach with guests. Thank you, Whitney and Ross, for making a really junky day turn into one of gratitude. Your kindness and excellent work shine. And for a first-time guest none-the-less! We'll be back! Keep being awesome!
The food and ambience was wonderful. This is one of our favorite places to dine. I was a bit disappointed this time. Upon arriving for our reservation, we requested to be seated on the patio. The hostess was quite unfriendly and informed us that they do not accommodate any special seating requests when reserving on OpenTable however, she was happy to put me on the waiting list. Have you ever seen their waiting list during Sunday brunch? That’s the very reason we used OpenTable for our reservations. Lesson learned, do not use OpenTable if you would like to sit on the patio or do not want to be seated in the bar.
The food and service was outstanding! Very welcoming restaurant.
The food and service were great. A bit pricey for the quantity and quality of food. Likely, due to Sacramento River levy and Old Sacramento location.
Aside from the waitress eating something behind the counter, and still chewing it when she took our order. everything was good and came out fast
Sat by the fireplace with view of the river. Simply wonderful. Delicious food and drinks.
Enjoyed the Downtown Dine menu.
The food was great, but we service was sub par. We had 7:30 reservations but weren’t seated until after 8. We also had a waitress who came by very infrequently and had to ask (after 25 mins after finishing the meal) for the bill.
Went during Restaurant Week. Had a 7:00 pm reservation and arrived 15 minutes early. They said seating would be closer to reservation time. Come 7:30 we're still waiting and there were still people in front of us. They then gave us a table in the bar area and told us there was table service there. After waiting 15 minutes without anyone coming to our table we left, as did the table next to us. Absolutely horrible service and no apologies from the staff. Will never go back!
The food and ambiance are pleasant, but the wait was incredibly long. It was a Saturday night, and we waited for an hour to get any food after having a reservation and having to wait to be seated 30 minutes past the reservation time. Possibly short staffed, but far too long of a wait for a meal.
The food was pretty good. However, the service was horrible. The waiter never introduced himself to us, we thought he was a bus boy bringing our water. Received our appetizers before our drinks. Had to ask him to take our order. Someone flung barbecue sauce all over my husbands jacket because they weren’t paying attention.
Went for Dine Downtown week. Got a three course meal for $35. The portions were super tiny and not worth the price, at all.
Fantastic food. Food was amazing! We will definitely come back.
